I've used this to take measurements of existing buildings to create renovation drawings. At first I double-checked the laser readings with a tape mesaure. But the readings were consistently correct so I learned to trust it. It is extremely handy and quick at taking measurements where it would be a pain to snake a tape measure around and over obstructions. I just needed a clear horizontal shot and with a click I had the dimension reading. It was also very useful in getting high window sill and head heights by using the pythagorean function. For outdoor measurements in daylight, I made a reflector plate by adhering reflectorized tape strips onto the back of a clipboard and having someone hold it at outside corners where I did not have a target to hit. The reflectorized tape makes the laser dot flash bright enough to see and get a good reading. For one man measuring, I just use a 2" x 6" plastic strip from old window blinds with reflectorized tape. At outside corners, interior or exterior, I attach the strip with putty or duct tape and shoot the laser at it from the opposite corner. Works well. Overall, the unit works very well. Only complaints are how the laser doesnt seem to shoot parallel to a wall when I snug the unit against a wall. I have to angle the front end slightly away from the wall which sometimes makes for a shaky reading because it takes some effort to push the button to get a reading. A backlight for the lcd panel would have been nice. The case is a bit too snug to use easily. Also wish it had a gyroscope that would provide audio feedback that the unit is level before taking a reading - the level bubble is hard to see. BUt these are nitpicks - this works very well and I'd recommend it to anyone who needs to take building measurements. The pythagorean function is a big plus too.

I'll be returning the GLR225 this week. Needed it on a whim after not bringing what I needed. Seemed to be the best out there, but the darkness of an industrial building, makes this practically useless. Am I right in seeing that lower end models have a backlit option?? Will likely replace with a Bosch, but pretty well bummed they didn't take care of this from the get go.

Comments about Bosch Tools Laser Distance Measurer:
Bought this about a year and half ago and am still impressed. I use this measure at least once a week and it never fails me. I've used it on one building we have which is 180' long and it gets it within about a quarter of an inch. On smaller distances I find that is generally within a sixteenth. Also a plus is excellent battery life - I'm still on the original set of batteries!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought it last month and I'm so happy that I got it. Make my job allot easier. It would be great if the LCD had back light. I would make it easier to use at night.

I just bought this yesterday and read the manual, understood all it's function, replaced it with new batteries and I'm surprised to find it is not nearly as accurate as described. I'm not sure if I purchased a malfunctioning unit or not but I purchased based on the name Brand.

Perfect quick reference tool
from Boulder, CO, United States
Did an entire 4 bedroom, 3 bath house, by myself in 10 minutes. I am a licensed Class A contractor and would highly recommend this for estimating, including carpet, tile, painting, flooring, siding, roofing, etc. With a partner holding a reflector you can do projects as big as large commercial spaces 225' by 225'. Would also recommend for realtors trying to get room sizes for their listings.
Life Expectancy 3-4 yrs
This has been an excellent tool but only expect 3-4 yrs per the support personnel at Bosch. Mine lasted a little longer.
Must have for the solo worker

This thing is amazing. I use it all the time to get room measurements for square footage and things. Much easier than trying to extend a tape under furniture and things. I can't believe how accurate it is. I mostly use it for rough figures but I have used it to measure a cut at over 16' and it was a tight fit. Hard to do that with tape measures by yourself. I have found myself using it a lot more than I thought I would when I bought it. The only down on it is even though the range is high, it is hard to see far when in the daylight outside. I really didn't expect to be able too.

When measuring for crown molding this is by far one of the best tools I've ever used. Its extremely accurate and dumby proof.
One star away from being AWESOME unfortunately

I really like the ease of use and function of the GLR225, HOWEVER it is just one feature away from being completely worth it. This device will not allow you to edit or change the value of the measurement to a custom setting. I need measure inside mounts for window coverings, I just need these measurements to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. This unit is hard set to 1/16 of an inch settings, which is great for more precise needs, but there is no way to adjust or change the default settings to anything else. Several other manufactures of laser measurement devices offer customizable settings to meet the users needs, I just thought this one would be comparable, but it was not, so shame on me for not researching this one in more depth before I purchased. Other than this comment the unit is solid if you take it as it comes and don't need any custom settings. Bosch engineers please add this function into your future product development lines.
