Here is a review for all of you, Roomba owners and non Roomba owners. I purchased a second generation Roomba from a local thrift shop several years ago just because I could not pass up the idea of spending 20 bucks to have a bot vacuum my house. It was cool but had a hard time in my thick carpet. So I decided to purchase a newer version. I ended up getting the Roomba 790, and man was I impressed!

I have become sooo spoiled having my house cleaned by this little bot. It vacuums my house every other day and makes it back to its dock most of the time. Because of who I purchased it through tho I decided to trade up to the new 880. Did my own research on it and just decided to take the plunge.

Compared to my old 790 the new 880 is way quieter, it picks up so much more stuff. The bin is slightly bigger, the extractors do not get clogged up at all like the old brushes. It seems to find its way around my house a bit better and it cleans very very very well. I do have several light houses that it has to navigate through and it does it seamlessly. I also really like that they redesigned the dock. Every dock that I have had has a power box half way through the power cord, and the cord ends up being a mile long. They have eliminated that and just put a plain cord straight to the dock. The cord is a bit shorter to. A plus for me because where I have mine dock the outlet is right above it so I do not have to try to hide as much extra cord. The other thing that none of the pics show is that the black ring that is around the display on the top of the unite is got a black wood grain look and you can only see it when the light hits it just so. Added bonus!I was sad to see the 790 go because it really did do such a great job. Picked up stuff that my kerby missed because it cleans so much more often.(3 to 5 days a week)

I also wanted to touch on the repair of the machine and customer service. The new 880 came with a very noisy part that had to be replaced. I called I-robot and within a matter of mins they were able to trouble shoot what was wrong with my bot and had the part send out to me in no time at all. To replace the part it took 8 screws that were easy to loosen (and stayed with the parts so that I could not loose them) and the part just lifted out. Put the new part in tighten the same 8 screws and back to work it went. A project that my 8 year old help me with. The customer service reps have always been super helpful and are extremely knowledgeable about all of there products and have always answered everything I have asked of them.

I would like to say something to the reviews that I have previously seen that rate this unite with one star and have negative things to say. I do understand that this might not be for everyone. With that being said, It really does make life soo much easier. It is a vacuum so yes it does make noise. It is way quieter than most other vacuums that you can buy from a department store. Yes it has a small bin compared to a huge one that most people only empty once a year. I empty mine out about twice a week or so but it is such an easy task, and here it is to put it into prospective. I spend maybe two mins emptying out a bin each time, How much time do you spend pushing a vacuum around? 30 mins? This little machine takes about two to three hours to clean the majority of my house and it is done while I am not home. I spend no time vacuuming my house other than the 2 mins it takes to dump out the dirt bin and clean the hair off the rollers and side brush (maybe 5 mins once a week)

Hopefully this review has been helpful to those of you who were looking to upgrade or just the person that wants to save some time and energy. Just a great company and a great product. I look forward to doing more business with them in the future. I-Robot keep up the AMAZING work!!!

We have 2 Roombas a 780 and an 880. We got the 880 after using the 780 and being extremely happy with it (we still are by the way, wish I had two 780s rather than one of each). The 780 (not available on this website) is in my opinion a much better machine (I would rate it 5 stars versus 2 stars for the 880) for the following reasons
1) The 780 uses a bristle clean brush and rubber roller on the bottom (as opposed to two rubber cleaning rollers on the 880). While the downside of a bristle brush is it needs to be pulled out and the per hair manually removed (weekly in our case), the upside is they do a much better job picking up dirt a trade off I prefer. This is especially true on tile as it cleans dirt out of the grout lines much better than the 880 which seems to leave it as the rubber rollers pass over the top of the grout lines. On a hardwood floor this would not be an issue.
2) It's unclear if this is a function of the rubber rollers or the more narrow neck on the debris bin (or both) but the 880 get pet hair jammed between the two rollers (see pic below after only 10 minutes of cleaning) so it then piles dirt and additional hair up between the machine and the debris bin (it doesn't always make it into the bin) which then means the 880 then basically herds dirt around the house rather than picking it up. You can also see than when you pick up the 880 (as opposed to letting it dock itself) as it leaves a pile of dirt on the floor (I never see that with the 780). Since we live in the desert (Phoenix) no matter how careful you are there is always dust and sand in the house that the 880 does not pick up nearly as well as the 780.
If you don't have pets the 880 is probably fine but if you do and you can find a 780 I'd buy it.

Comments about iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

All right so with each upgrade these robots are getting closer to perfection! Now, that I am a proud owner of this machine, I cannot give it up...ever!
The robot does a pretty good job keeping the dust and hair levels down in my home. I use an upright every week just to clean the furniture from the legs up. Maybe the next model could climb furniture! (JK) The only issue I have with the robot is at first it is tricky to get the lighthouses in a good pattern so the robot can easily navigate around your home. But once that is done then it usually will complete a mission successfully. I have to empty the bin once a day so I don't mind placing it back on it's base if it gets lost or stuck which is not that often. I have a larger home so I purchase and additional Homebase and place one at each end of the house. Now the robot can make one complete pass through the home and does not have to try backtracking through the house to recharge. It can find whichever dock is closer and park itself.
If you need ANY help with the robot including sending them your floor plan so they can help you with lighthouse placement, iRobot Customer Service is superior! One last grip is the unit should come with a longer warranty or with an option to buy an extended one. I use mine every day, sometimes twice and after the year mark you can start to see small issues with the unit. All the parts are user replaceable however for the initial cost it probably should have better reliability or offer a discount on parts.

Comments about iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

Roomba 880 is a great option to set a schedule for daily vacuuming to keep floors clean. Empty the bin every day or two (depending on pet hair or dustiness of your floors), and there isn't much else you need to do. I set the schedule for 4pm on weekdays, and the floor is nice and clean of litter and fur from the cats when I get home. The 880 is much quieter than the original Discovery model and cleans better. It avoids stairs and can climb from a hard floor up onto carpet, so it cleans both my living room and the adjoining bathroom. It's pretty good at avoiding clutter, rarely getting itself stuck.

        Service and delivery comments:

I was supposed to sign for the machine upon delivery and I was gone and I had left instructions for the package to be delivered to a business just up the street and instead of doing this, UPS just left it at the front door. You might rethink using UPS for your delivery company specially since thievery is rampant where I live!!!!!! But maybe those drivers aren't paid to use their brains and think for once!!!!!

It took me a little while to figure out what I had to do to get it started, but once I did away it went. It does a really good job and doesn't get stuck. It has this way of working its way out of tough spots so you don't have to run over and free it. It does underneath almost everything in my house, and even found some kitty toys I thought were lost. The only thing is it hasn't went back to the dock even once. I am going to try a couple new locations to see if it will return "home." I would highly recommend this cleaning robot.

I would not buy this product again. Bought 2 Roomba 880s two years ago. They aren't cheap. Both are shot due to not being able to charge on the dock because the connector to the dock located on the bottom side of the vacuum is melted and pushed in and the connecter on the dock is melted and all black. Talk about a fire hazard and a piece of junk. Did not use these every day, but maybe 3 times a week. Thought they would last longer. My room size are not huge, average living room and bedroom size. Extremely disappointed.

Comments about iRobot Roomba 880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

I bought Roomba Number 4 as part of the Mother's Day sale this year. For 15% off, it was a deal that I couldn't pass up. My previous three Rombas were 500-series models from Woot, so they were super cheap (but awesome) at $200; this guy was a little pricier ($500 or so).

With the 500-series robots, the first thing that I had to do was replace the cleaning head with a more pet-friendly one. This robot is perfect out of the box. The 800-series cleaning head is way better designed than the earlier ones, and there are no bristles, so cleaning it is super easy (pull the torus of cat hair out of each end of the brushes, and it's done).

The flat, rectangular filter is also much better than the curved ones on the older models. It's easy to clean, since my DustBuster can get right in there and vacuum up all of the dust that's accumulated, and it's a lot sturdier than the blue curved ones (their little blue struts would crack all the time).

On my older Roombas, I would, as a matter of course, simply empty out the bin and clean the robot before each use. With the "bin full" icon on this one (and the way more pet-friendly cleaning assembly), it turns out that I can often let it run a couple of times before I have to clean it properly.

In addition, it's a bit quieter and calmer; its behavior I can only describe as more patient--it doesn't ram into things at full speed all the time. It seems to take its time.
