Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens - 4426B002

Designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation, the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom lens brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series of lenses. It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity, plus an IS system that increases usability by approximately four stops. The Image Stabilization system also features a function that allows it to continue to operate, even when used on a rigid tripod. An optional Canon Tripod Mount C (W II) is available as an accessory, for balanced mounting on a tripod or monopod. Gleaming white on its exterior, the lens is dust- and water-resistant, and now also features a newly-developed Fluorine coating that resists smears and fingerprints, and significantly eases lens cleaning. For any serious and critical EOS user, this new L-series lens represents an excellent -- and portable -- solution to versatile telephoto lens shooting.

Though obviously not as fast as any of Canon's 70-200 L lenses, the 70-300L is in some ways a more practical, versatile lens for every day use. The biggest advantage is size: Though still a big heavy lens by most measures, by telephoto zoom standards, the 70-300L is *relatively* small and light. It isn't that much bigger than the 24-105L. And its about an inch shorter than the 70-200 f4, and about 2 inches shorter than the 70-200 f2.8, so it fits more easily in a camera bag. It is considerably lighter than the 70-200 f2.8L. I have borrowed my friend's 70-200 f4, a great lens as well, but the 70-300 is just more pleasant to carry around. If you are a lazy photographer like me, you may find that you are more likely to bring the 70-300L with you because the other lenses are too much trouble. Another advantage obviously is reach - you get another 100mm without having to use a teleconverter. You may not need it, but its is very nice to have in a lot of situations. The biggest con for me is that the zoom and focus rings are reversed from every other Canon lens I have used: on this lens, the zoom ring is out on the end of the lens, and the manual focus ring is the one closer to the body. Presumably there was some engineering reason why they had to do it this way, but it takes getting used to, especially when switching between lenses. And I just find it easier when the more frequently used zoom ring is the one closer to the body. This is the main thing I wish I could change about the lens. Another con is that even if you don't need to shoot at a wide aperture, because this is an f5.6 lens (at the long end), not all of the autofocus points are available on the 5D3. There are still plenty of points in the center column, and the autofocus is still very fast and accurate, but just remember that you won't have all the points on the side areas like with most of your lenses. Some people complain that Canon doesn't include a tripod ring, but I don't find it that big a deal because this is a lens that is meant to be hand-held. It also doesn't have a fancy zippered case like 70-200 f2.8, just the simpler cloth bag like other L lenses, but that doesn't matter either because you will tend to keep this lens in your camera bag or on the camera - you aren't going to want a separate case for it. All the zoom lenses involve a tradeoff between size, weight, maximum aperture, and price. The 70-300L might not be ideal for portraits, or for shooting indoor sports, or for other low-light applications. But for general outdoor applications, including sports and nature photography, I find it is a very practical, user-frendly lens.

I tested this lens to see if it could replace my 100-400. I certainly like that it's lighter and smaller, and the optics quality is fantastic. The rotating zoom ring (vs push/pull) is more versatile (I think push/pull is fine for still photography but when I shoot video it's impossible.) I also agree with others who said Canon should include the tripod mount ring, but that's minor. The biggest problem for me is that unlike the 100-400, this lens wont' work with the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III and 2x III. I occasionally want to go out to 500+ (e.g when shooting sports or auto racing). This is really too bad. I don't understand why Canon would not make it work, possibly a size issue? If I could use the Extender I would make the replacement and give this lens 4.5 stars.

Great lens and nice bargain

By

from Denver, CO, United States

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I purchased this lens as a refurbished product. Pricewise it was a great bargain as Canon had further 10% off. It came with Lens, both Caps, Hood and Case. The box came with was not original lens box. Product had no scratches, marks or any visible sign showing that is used or so. It was looking like a new one. Lens build quality is a amazing, built like a tank. I have taken several shots so far and image quality is excellent as it should be in L lens. But I would say it is very little soft on wider side than telephoto. Image stabilization works awesome on this lens. Even at telephoto end it quickly stabilizes the image as soon I press AF or shutter button and I can click the shot. Lens is bit heavy at 1050 gms. I use Canon 80D which gives me focal range on this lens from 112-480mm. Earlier I had bought Canon 70-200mm f/4 L Lens non-IS, but image quality did not seem to be on par with the L tag even in bright light. I was surprised and returned it. In comparison, this lens is amazing. I plan to use it to shoot wild life, birds and maybe sports. Overall I am very with the product.

Lens collar problem

By

from New Orleans, LA, United States

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

Yes this is a "lens" review. ... and the lens is performing well. However, owning some 20+ Canon lenses including 8 that use lens collars, this is the FIRST lens collar that is poor. Sure I know it "can" be shot without one. However, for serious landscape photography, I believe the better balance adds to stability and convenience, especially when shooting vertical. Two things: The bolt does not completely tighten down the spinning movement. More importantly, the lens actually rocks in the collar.

Fast & accurate

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I bought this in 2012, replacing my EF 70-200mm F/4L IS w/1.4 extender. It covers the range most useful to me without adding and removing the extender. Focus speed, image stability and clarity are exceptional, used mostly for birds and wildlife. My daughter loves it so much she is now taking it on an African safari with her family, willing to deal with its size and weight on a complex trip.

Great lens

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I am an amateur photographer and I was looking for something with a little more zoom and quality than the lens that came with my camera. I have taken the same exact shot with both lens' and this one is a way better quality image.

Terrific Lens

By

from Columbus, OH

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I've used this lens for the past three years on 60D and a 5DIII bodies. The sharpness and operation are excellent and the stabilization is superb. I've shot sharp images at 300mm and 1/30 second! The lens works well for outdoor sports when on the 60D. This makes the lens an effective 112-480 zoom.

Excellent lens that but...

By

from Missouri

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

This is a very good lens that is very sharp on both the wide and telephoto end. I did have to micro adjust the telephoto end. That said I give this lens a 4 instead of a 5 due to the location of the focus ring and Canon's failure to provide a tripod collar. It is just too easy to accidently change focus while shooting hand held. A tripod collar would help mitigate this design issue.

Wonderful.... purchase ever

By

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I'm using EF 70-300mm L IS f/4-5.6 for year. No issues with the lens. It has a weather & dust seal. It has awarded as a best lens 2011 from EISA. This is a really best lens but it has a problem with night shooting, because of f/4-5.6. In dark areas it wasn't focus. However it deliver awesome picture quality.. super build quality. Easy to hand held.... i recommended & trust CANON stuff only.. Canon is the best... better if price down.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I haven't had this lens long, but I've taken over 1500 shots with it. It replaced an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. Although that is a fine lens for the price, it left me wanting just a bit better image quality. Shipping time was great, in fact, it was delivered early. The lens was in great shape, and I mention this because I just didn't know what to expect from a refurbished product. I do have other "L" lenses, so I knew what to expect in the way of image quality, and this lens did not let me down. Focus is very fast, even in evening light @ 300mm, and IS is really a dream on this lens. I was worried about that, but this one is excellent. It is a bit heavy, but still handles well and I haven't felt the need of the mono pod attachment. I read some reviews that complained about f/5.6 being a bit dark for an "L" lens, but I've been using an ISO of 400 in overcast and late evening light, and haven't had a problem getting crisp shots.

I bought this lense couple months ago, it is one of the best lense I've used. It works very fast, and quality is superb and totally takes a beating. It is the perfect travel lense for me because of the wide range of zoom. I really wish the price was a bit lower though...

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Camera Lens:

I have been using this lens for about 6 months now, it is a super lens. I was using the entry 75-300 lens that I thought I was happy with it until I started using the L series lens. The only thing I wish is that it would work with the 2X extender. I just purchase the new canon 6d and it would be nice if it had a little more distance range. I was using the Rebel T2i with the L lens and for bird shots it does better that the 6D until you get into the higher ISO ranges, where the 6D by far excels in.
