iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot, Model S450020

The new Scooba 450 is the only robot that scrubs hard floors so you don't have to. Just fill the tank, press CLEAN and the Scooba Three-Cycle Cleaning Process automatically sweeps and pre-soaks, scrubs, then squeegees your floors, tackling stuck-on messes and washing away over 99.3% of bacteria.* Scooba 450 is the perfect choice for brilliantly clean hard floors, every day, the easy way.

Features:

Scooba 450 delivers maximum cleaning performance. The key is iRobot's Pre-Soak Technology, developed as part of the Scooba Three-Cycle Cleaning Process.

The Scooba Three-Cycle Cleaning Process
Based on professional-grade floor cleaners, the revolutionary new Scooba Three-Cycle Cleaning Process has been redesigned from the ground up to clean hard-surface floors three tiimes better than ever before. Here's how it works:

  • Cycle 1 Sweep and Pre-Soak: Scooba sweeps up loose dirt and debris and puts down a thin sheen of water or iRobot Hard Floor Cleaner to soak into any stuck-on messes.
  • Cycle 2 Scrub and Squeegee-Vacuum: A scrubbing brush spins at over 600 RPM to remove grime while the squeegee vacuum suctions dirty water off the floor.
  • Cycle 3 Squeegee-Finish: Scooba ends with a final squeegee-finish cycle.

Use Scooba 450 anywhere you would use a mop and bucket, including tile, linoleum, vinyl, marble, slate, stone and sealed hardwood. Unlike a mop that reuses dirty water, Scooba uses fresh solution from start to finish.

Easy To Use
Just fill the robot and press CLEAN. Scooba 450 is easy to use from beginning to end:

  • Easy To Fill And Empty: Fill and empty the tank in seconds without fuss.
  • Two Cleaning Cycles: Choose from a full 40-minute cycle or 20-minute cycle for smaller spaces.
  • Cleans With Water Or iRobot Hard Floor Cleaner: Use water or iRobot Hard Floor Cleaner for a deeper clean to wsh away bacteria.
  • Avoids Off-Limit Areas: A Virtual Wall keeps Scooba in rooms you want to clean and out of ones you don't.
  • Compatible with Roomba Accessories: Scooba 450 is compatible with Roomba Virtual Walls, battery charger and batteries.
  • Talks To You: The information button and audible cues give you insight into robot behaviors.
  • Simple To Clean: Removable cleaning head makes for easy access to brushes and squeegee for a quick clean by hand.

iAdapt Responsive Navigation Technology

  • Using iAdapt Technology, the advanced system of software and sensors used in Roomba, Scooba 450 offers complete coverage of every section of floor. iAdapt has been modified for wet floors to optimize the timing between recurrent passes on the floor.
  • Scooba 450 makes multiple passes over every section of floor to ensure the most thorough coverage possible. Scooba 450 cleans rooms up to 300 square feet in one cleaning cycle.
  • Scooba 450 cleans dust and dirt right along wall edges. The robot's light-touch bumper system minimizing impact with walls and furniture. The soft-touch bumper has a non-marking strip to prevent damage to furniture and marking of walls and baseboards. Smart, built-in sensors help Scooba avoid rugs, carpets, stairs and other drop-offs.

I love the new Scooba. It works really well. I have laminate and tile floors, and it mops and dries both types perfectly. I like that I can set it up to run before I go out and come home to a clean floor. My floors now get mopped much more frequently than they did before.
It took me a little while to get used to the noise, since the robot sounds more like a vacuum than a hand mop (which of course is nearly silent), but once I adjusted to that idea, it doesn't both me at all, even if I'm in the same room.
I also got a charging and drying stand and I LOVE it! It elevates the Scooba so it's not dripping on the floor when it's done, and it takes up less space standing vertically than with the regular charger. The stand also looks sleek and lets me highlight my robot instead of sliding it under a corner cabinet to charge.

I typically use this in my kitchen and high traffic areas to clean and sanitize as we have a infant crawler who is all over the floor.

Like most new products, some kinks have to be worked out. Where Scooba falls short is the final stages of squeegee cleanup. It just doesn't work on my floors, which are admittedly older hardwood that is not always level. It also seems to give too much of a buffer for virtual walls. I have to set them about 2 feet further out than what I expected because otherwise Scooba doesn't come anywhere close to the boundary. I feel like I have to babysit this thing. While Scooba works well, I'm just not convinced it was worth the purchase.

Soak feature allows water to evaporte before it is sucked up

Pros

    Cons

    • Soak feature allows water to evaporate too soon

    Best Uses

Comments about iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot:

The Scooba 390 was perfect. The 450's soak function reduced the effectiveness of the Scooba dramatically. At least that is what I believe causes there to be very little water in the dirty tank. It appears that when it lays down water to "soak", most of the water evaporates before it gets back around to vacuum it up. So all it is doing is adding soap to the dirt on the floor, if you are using soap. If not, it is simply laying water down on top of your dust and debris. I am extremely hopeful that the next version upgrade will not have this soak function. If you've experienced the same thing, please voice your opinion so we can get that taken off of the next Scooba!

      Great improvement over 350

      • Tracked in mud

Comments about iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot:

I have owned a Scooba 350/399 since that model came out. Our kitchen is the main entrance to the house and we keep chickens and garden, so are constantly tracking in mud. Scooba has been invaluable, but the 350 had issues, particularly maintenance.

The 450 is a marked improvement in design and functionality. It stands on its side, so takes less space while charging. The new rollers are MUCH easier to clean. The tank can be cleaned much more effectively, which was a major issue with the 350. Most importantly, the 350 ports used to get clogged with all sorts of muck and were difficult to clean effectively. If you let it sit, compacted material could block water flow. The 450 has a shorter passage and can be cleaned easily. The new screen is also MUCH easier to keep clean.

I like the more informative information on errors and progress. The 450 scoots much faster around the floor and the new brushes and squeegies seem to clean more effectively. The height also works better with my cabinets. The 350 would catch under cabinets - I had to put thin pieces of wood under them so it would run without supervision. This works better. The new lighthouses also communicate with my roomba, so I don't need to have two different sets of lighthouses to keep roomba in and scooba out of my kitchen.

I love the Scooba. When I bought my first one, I had doubts that it could clean effectively. I was very pleasantly surprised. What you have to know about all robot cleaners is that they make up with time what they lack in efficiency. They don't clean like you do. They do a fast pick up. They lay down water and let it soak to take up the dirt more easily. Then they do more of a scrub and squeegie.

I set it to run when I go to bed and smile every morning when I walk into a clean kitchen. Once a month I go in and do odd corners it can't reach with a sponge. The rest of the time I spend less than 5 minutes a day with scooba and get great floors.

Comments about iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot:

I would not recommend buying the Scooba. One of my main reasons for purchasing the Scooba was to save time; unfortunately, it does not save me very much time. I have had to set it up (5 min.), go to its rescue because it became lodged under furniture and cabinets (5 min.), correct the errors saying it was stuck on a perfectly flat surface (2 min.), and clean it (5 min. - while listening to it repeatedly tell me to turn it upright - I turn it upside-down to take off the brush attachment and clean it). On average I spend 10-20 minutes to clean one 300 square foot room. I can clean that size room by hand in that amount of time. Considering I have to do this several times because of the size of my house, it becomes quite annoying. Also, my Scooba lasted about a year and a half which is not impressive considering the cost. The thing is annoying too; there are constant warnings and beeping. It becomes clogged constantly, and I have to clean the screen which doesn't appear to have any debris on it, but after it is cleaned, it works again. This machine is too much trouble.

This machine sometimes does not finish the job. I just watched it lay down fluid on my kitchen hardwood floor, over and over without ever doing the the very important squeegee and vacuum part. Scooba left the water on the floor and announced it was done. Plenty of remaining battery charge, small room, no excuse...Sometimes it does all the cycles, but on a large room it leaves water to evaporate before it gets to the cleaning cycles.

Comments about iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot:

I LOVE the Roomba, so obviously I was very excited to add the Scoomba to my work force at the house. It works great for small rooms ie: bathroom, kitchen, hallway. In large rooms however, it doesn't seem to clean as well. By the time it gets back to scrub and vaccum where it dropped water/cleaner, the solution is already dry. You have to divide up a large room in order for it to be effective. Also, the virtual walls that work with the Roomba DO NOT work for the Scoomba, so you have to buy a whole new set of virtual walls to keep the Scoomba where you want to clean. Other than that, it does a pretty good job of cleaning.

Comments about iRobot Scooba 450 Floor Washing Robot:

The Scooba 450 could be a good floor cleaner, and it has indeed cleaned my floors spotlessly on several occasions, however its design is fundamentally flawed. Unlike previous models, iRobot opted for a 3-pass cycle where the robot cleans the room, then washes and finally squeegees dry - in contrast to previous models where all of this was accomplished in a single pass.

                  This causes two problems:

                  1. If you live in a hot, dry climate, much of the water will have already evaporated by the time the robot comes around to dry the floor. I bought the Scooba in the winter and my opinion of it was better until summer came around. I try to combat this by running it early in the morning or late at night.

                  2. Whether or not the Scooba cleans your floor well is entirely down to random chance. This is because it is designed to bounce off objects in the hope that it will eventually cover the entire room, which means that the robot has no idea where it has been and frequently neglects to dry areas that it has washed, leaving the dirty water to dry. I have a dark floor with skylights, meaning that any dirt or marks on the floor are highly visible, and often after running the Scooba the floor actually looks dirtier than when I started.

The only way to get around this is to make it wash the floor over and over again (after a full charge each time of course) in the hope that the random nature of the algorithm eventually covers the entire floor.

I would imagine the Scooba works brilliantly in an empty room situated in a cool, humid climate, but I would definitely not advise it in a dry climate or any moderately complex room.

I really wanted to like the Scooba because the idea of having a hard floor cleaning robot that doesn't require pads is extremely appealing. If iRobot can release a new version with a 1-pass cycle I would happily give it 5 stars, with bonuses if they can make it quieter, have longer battery life and make it more intelligently navigate a room.
