Great features but needs improvement
Comments about Bosch Tools Benchtop Router Cabinet-Style Table:
The overall quality is OK, but the router table has a few poorly designed features. I've made a number of modifications and now it works the way I like it. First the track for vertical and horizontal feather boards are not very well designed. The vertical track was easy to fix - I got rid of the bolts it came with the unit and used regular hex head bolts so now it works fine. The horizontal one took more work. The track itself is really cheap and not standard so you can't use it with any other tool such as a miter gauge, your own jigs or sleds. The feather boards are OK but have cheap plastic sliding parts. I routed out a wider, deeper grove and installed a dual track with a standard 3/4 inch track for other tools and a hex head bolt track to use the supplied feather board. The other issues are the carriage head bolts used in the MDF to adjust and secure the fence. Mine started to show signs or wear right away because the hex part of the carriage bolt would twist in the grove each time it was tightened. It also has a limited range and was a real pain to remove and reinstall each time you wanted a simple flat table vs using it with the supplied fence. I routed in two larger groves and placed two longer hex head bolts clear to the rear of the table so removing or replacing the fence is a breeze. The fence is much more stable and easy to use. Another minor complaint but not really a show stopper is the switch location. I keep catching my shirt on it but after a while you learn to work around it. Eventually I'll make my own router table with better router mounting base adjustment screws, but this one works good for now. Give Bosh credit for really working hard to throw in a bunch of nice features for a reasonable price that serious amateur woodworkers need. It has a really nice rigid mounting base that can accept top height adjustment router bases, a thick/stable table, a full cabinet, great fence, an external switch that accepts your router cord from inside the case. They just came up short in a few areas but the great thing is with a few easy mods the poorly designed features can be improved and now my router table rivals many much more expensive units.

Almost a good table
from Vancouver, WA, United States
I bought this table as a new woodworker based on Bosch's reputation. The only real complaint for me is the 3 Mounting Plate Insert Rings. They are weak and eventually start to dip/sag when inserted causing the effects of that to be transferred to your wood as you move it across the top. Looking for a different table with a smooth level surface now. I didn't experience the other tightening problems as in other reviews. That all still works fine for me after three years. Some black marks on my wood from sliding across the aluminum mounting plate though. I have a Bosch router, so I was able to adjust it through the top, but I did have to wiggle the router from below when doing so to get it to move freely once it gets sticky from dust build up. It was a good starter table.

Not the Best quality table

I was so easy on this tool because I knew it was made out of MDF. The slots in the table rounded out in the first month, I used it only a few times. Maybe a metal runner along the slots would solve the problem.

Great concept, but falls short
from Minneapolis, MN, United States
Overall this is a nice little router table for occasional use. There are two main drawbacks to the table though. 1) Accuracy of the router fence - the alignment marks are only good for a very course adjustment - to within a 1/16 or so. This is dependent on the positioning of the router mounting plate and the milled recessed area for the mounting plate on my table has a bit of play and is not square to the table. 2) Durability of the fence hold down - the fence is held in place by two square bolts in a slot cut into the table top. Because the surface is particle board, the slot to prevent the square bolts from rotating when tightening or untightening wears very quickly. I ended up routing two slots for Rockler's T-Track and buying some T-Track knobs. The cost to do this far exceeds the difference between this Bosch table and the all-aluminum one (RA1181)
get's the job done!
Would not buy this tool if I had a second chance but thank god with some finagling it does the job !
RA1171 router table
from Zephyrhills, FL
Purchased this March 2011 and use it to make frames for my wife's paintings, shelf units, bird houses etc etc. In general this is a very good tool for the price. The only problem I find is the router fence, very hard to align and I find it is much simpler to use a metal bar and clamp it to the table top. My question: Is a better fence avaiable for this model ??

Have been using for several weeks and found two cons: 1) The fence has two independent lock down bolts making it tedious to set correctly. the marks on the table don' t seem to align the fence parralell. Have to measure from the face to a fixed point on the table for exact setting. 2) The router mounting plate is below the table surface by about 0.025 - 0.030" which causes a slight difference in cuts, especially noticable when I used a dove tail jig. I plan to level the insert with shim stock. The accessory insert that according to the manual is used to adapt routers not listed, is not available - never released according to Bosch. Other than this it is a good table for intermittent use.
RA1171 Router Table
A great product for the home wood worker. I used this in combination with my Bosch router but looking at the connection plate I would assume that it would work with other brands. Once you get over the setup (this product must be fully assembled) and the learning curve on how to use the fence you should be able to do almost anything that you could want to with a router, including dovetail joints. Obviously this would not work as well as a dedicated dovetail jig but if you know what to do you can get them done. I have yet to find something that I can not do with this table.
