Comments about Asus N550 Dark Gray Laptop Computer:
I am a graduate student and was looking for a powerful, reliable laptop. I have been using it for two weeks and it has been absolutely wonderful with the exception of some issues with Window's 8 (which is at no fault of the actual machine). It is fast, the touchscreen is sensitive, and it is super quiet. It can handle all my coursework easily and has been a wonderful purchase thus far.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Everything you need in a laptop
from Tacoma, WA
This is my first Laptop. With that said, I've always had a desktop and last year built my new tower from scratch with parts of ASUS and NVIDIA in the tower. I researched based upon price, value, durability, design, and internal components for this laptop, and then looked at overall price. I was trying to stay under $1000.I had to purchase this laptop as I will need one for anesthesia school, so why not go all out as I utilize my computing components until well past their lifespan. This was an investment for personal use AND professional use.So far, I've only used the laptop a few times for web browsing, social media, email, and media viewing.PROS: the overall look is very sleek, smooth, pleasing to the eye. The keyboard is raised just the right amount and feels great when typing. The back-lit keyboard has adjustments for dark settings as does the overall back light to the screen. I wanted the DVD/CD drive in the laptop (one less thing to carry separate). The functional keypad is nice with the multiple smart finger strokes and the designated right/left mouse button area. Simply tapping the finger as opposed to clicking the pad is MUCH easier. There is also the option of the touch screen, which had I had the option, I'd probably go without as I won't use it that much, but the vivid picture/clarity/color/angle of view on the screen is pristine! The speed of the processor is excellent. The fan intake/output seems to help keep everything cool, but then again I have not done any hard gaming on it. If having the 16GB version was more in my price range, I'd have gone with that one, but I can always add that in later (i've read reviews that it is a bit tricky to just get the back face plate off though, but it is at least an option to add the other 8GB!). The software Windows 8.1 was very nice to load as all my settings for everything were carried over from the cloud and instantly automatically were set on their own from my desktop. I will be adding the 4 year student version of office to it later as well.Cons: Only things I have found annoying so far is the keypad. It is VERY stiff when having to click Left of Right mouse while dragging stuff on a window. Before even using the laptop, the very first thing I notices is the bottom left corner is not flush with the face and is slightly raised up. The right raises slightly up to make it even only when picking up the laptop by the bottom right corner. Obviously you're supposed to use two hands, but hopefully it doesn't warp it over time. The click you have to depress the keypad very firmly to get it to click which hopefully that wears over time. Like I said in the pros, I usually just tap. One extra function that would be REALLY nice is the option to have the right and left TAP in those designated areas for the smart gestures. The other button that is similar to the keypad is the power on button. I pressed it slightly to power on, and it clicked, but did nothing. I had to depress it like the keypad (firmly) to power on.The screen is a gloss (I would have preferred the matte whether it is a touch screen or not), and if one were to use the touch screen a lot, you will be definitely leaving finger prints everywhere. The laptop came with a cleansing soft cloth for those smudges. The sound quality is excellent, but when using it on your lap, the speakers are in the front so would sound better I think from the back?? Not sure. It comes with a detached bass, and I have yet to try it, but overall the sound is excellent for the "surround" effect. The double intake/output fans are a great concept, but I wonder if the laptop gets really warm from hard processing/gaming, if the heat that rises up the back/front of the screen if that would be slightly effective to the screen itself. So far no complaints on that but questioning the idea of that instead of coming out the under the sides as well as the under the back.Overall, BUY THIS LAPTOP! It is a mid-priced version of an everyday laptop with the function of higher usage. I'm VERY pleased with the overall design and components of it. If the 16GB 256 SS (versus the 8GB 1 TB HD) were cheaper I would have gotten that one, so if you have the funds and are willing to spend around 1200 to 1300 on a laptop, get that one! Now to find a backpack to keep this baby safe when transporting!
Service and delivery comments:
It was a birthday gift to myself, that arrived VERY fast and early! The delivery requires a signature at arrival, which I live in a basement apt of a house, which the owner upstairs was able to sign for me as I was gone when it arrived. The packaging was ample to keep my new baby safe and sound. Perfect condition and prompt arrival!

Very pleased. I it primarily for general home/office stuff but I needed the graphics power for some gaming and CAD work. It's not a top-end gaming platform but it easily handles WOT and the first-person shooters I'm addicted to. A number of reviews cited hardware issues but I haven't seen any problems.
Great performance and value

The display is one of the best, even higher priced units. Extremely fast start-up.

I have no complaints about this computer. It may not be the lightest computer on the market, but for the larger screen size it isn't all that hard to tote it around. Certainly not back breaking in the least. I replaced the hard drive with a solid state drive so I can't comment on how fast it would be with the normal drive, but with the solid state this thing flies and is silent. It has a very clear and sharp screen that can be seen from many angles quite clearly. The keyboard is easy to use and has a nice hand rest area in front. The number pad is a little on the small side, but is still quite functional and I use that a lot for work related use. The touch screen capability is perfect and I use it probably more often than the touchpad. The battery life is also very good as well. I have used the computer on just battery power for several hours and still have life left. Just make sure to use power saving settings whenever you can to prolong the battery life even more. I haven't had to use customer service at all so can't comment on how well they support the device. All in all this is a great computer.

not as long battery life as the mac but enough to watch 2 movies (just) when you are on the road.

Although the things listed in the above comment are possible, they are not recommended due to the fact that it will void the manufacturers warranty.

High Quality Laptop

I purchased this Asus as an all-purpose home PC, with enough speed and memory for photo and video editing. I love the touchscreen from a convenience standpoint. Screen resolution and graphics are tops for the price point - I would say a 4 out of 5 overall. The screen is not true HD, but I've watched a few movies (both streaming and from DVD) and I don't notice any lack of quality. The computer was pretty easy to upgrade. I replaced the HDD with a 250GB Samsung SSD, and it boots everything ridiculously quick - Windows boots in about 10 seconds, shuts down is about 5 seconds, Adobe light room boots in about 3 seconds, all of my games boot quickly as well. I also added 8GB of RAM. Most laptops come with two 4GB sticks to save money, but this laptop comes with one 8GB stick standard. The touch pad clicking isn't great, and took a little bit to get used to. There is a lot of multi-finger functionality that makes it easy to scroll and switch programs and screens.Keyboard is fine, but wish they had bumps on the WASD keys for gaming. Full number pad is great.Sounds quality is nice. It comes with an external sub-woofer which definitely improves sound quality, but is also slightly inconvenient. The headphone jack has been sensitive with my headphones, but this might be a problem with headphones and not the jack - don't know.Processor speed is fantastic. Graphics card is also very fast for graphics rendering and decent for gaming. There are better gaming options, but not for the price. If you are a casual gamer - this is fine.Overall, I am extremely happy with my choice. The drawbacks are minimal, and I would buy this again.
This is a great laptop with a beautiful display. The touchscreen works nicely. No fault of the manufacturer...windows 8 is the worst design ever for a PC.

This laptop is extraordinary for the price. I use it as my main computer as a soon-to-be college student. It handles cutting-edge games on medium at native resolution and older games on high/ultra at native resolution. The touchscreen is fantastic - Windows 8 just doesn't make sense without it. Haven't had the chance to thoroughly test battery life, but it will definitely last for at least 3-4 hours without gaming, which is pretty good given the hardware that this laptop is running.I would highly recommend putting an SSD in this laptop because the hard drive it comes with is pretty slow. I swapped out the hard drive for the Samsung 840 Evo 120GB SSD since the connection in that bay is a SATA III connection, and swapped out the DVD Drive for the original hard drive. Don't put the SSD in the DVD drive bay - it is only a SATA II connection, which would eliminate any speed boosts from the SSD. The performance boost is well worth the effort, and it's an easy upgrade to do if you do the research.I highly recommend this laptop - it's most likely the best purchase available at this price if you are looking for a multimedia laptop that can handle the latest games.
