Beautiful sound but?
Comments about Sony ES 9.2 Channel 4K Black A/V Receiver:
I believe I may have received a flawed receiver. It has been back and forth to the repair shop for protect issues. Which basically causes the system to not fire up. Prior to this occurring it seemed some channels quit working resulting in the quality of sound degraded. The system does run a little hot and the service department stated they had to replace some of the boards in the system. The second time I received the receiver back from repair I was told another board had come loose. I am hoping that this is not the norm with these receivers and have requested a replacement since I received the receiver back from the repair center I have the same problem with nothing connected to the receiver except the power cable. I have a number of high performance Sony equipment and I believe Sony will come through. I will write another review once I get a system that is operational and problem free.

Sony STR-DA5800ES is a spectacular A/V receiver
from Los Angeles, CA, USA
This product is replacing an 17 or so year old Denon, which still works and will be used elsewhere. I wanted a new receiver that supported HDMI switching, 4K throughput support, uncompressed Dolby and DTS decoding, front height channels, and offered hi-rez audio file playback. Granted, this amp is more powerful than my previous one, but the sound is richer and more dynamic as well. The HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) Is mapped from actual movie theaters and mastering studios and sounds fantastic in my opinion. This receiver is versatile, and easy to calibrate with its auto calibration mic and on board GUI. Dolby Atmos would be nice, of course, but the theater like quality sound and 9 channels of power offer a multitude of speaker placement options that should satisfy most home theater enthusiasts. Highly recommended!

Good sound, but not a multi-zone receiver
from Waterford charter Township, MI 48329, USA
I have had this receiver for about a year and a half. I bought it because I have owned 2 other Sony ES receivers and have loved them. Also because my intention was to use the multi zone functions to run my main TV and a second TV in my kitchen. The main TV is in my family room and is there all of my a/v equipment is located. The kitchen TV is just a TV I didn't want any other equipment in there. It's hanging on a wall. This receiver advertises it is a multi zone receiver and technically if the moons and stars align it is, but it is very clunky and the limitations imposed by Sony and HDCP make it just about useless as a multi zone receiver. At least for my purposes. let me explain... Maybe I expected too much, but here's what I expected. I wanted to be able to hook up all of my equipment to this receiver and have it output through 5.1 or 7.1 speakers in the main room and play another source in the kitchen using my TV speakers. The device does not do this. Or rather it can't get the mixing right. I have an Apple TV, a PS4, XBox One, XBox 360, PS3, and a Sony CD player. All hooked up to the receiver via HDMI cables. Because I wanted good quality picture and sound and less wires to manage. Then I ran an HDMI cable to my kitchen 60 Ft away. I also ran the zone 2 speakers to my patio assuming I could play music from my Apple TV or CD player outside when I was there. So my first issue was that because I am not connecting devices capable of 5.1+ sound in both zones and the receiver does not down mix to stereo for the Kitchen TV the sound from there while playing most sources is hosed. I get the right and left channels, but nothing from that should play from the center or less importantly the surround. My next issue is that only analog sound is sent to the Zone 2 speakers. So even though I am only playing stereo from my Apple TV no sound comes out of my patio speakers. I guess I expected more from a high end receiver. It is packed with features and sounds great in the main zone. But the Lower models did that. This was billed as multi zone which it does very poorly. I have also had it repaired and spent hours online with Sony support working through some of the issues. These are the ones that still exist, and are likely not to be fixed.
