Whirlpool 50 Pint Electronic Home Dehumidifier, Model AD50U

Remove moisture in temperatures as low as 38° F.! This ENERGY STAR° qualified Ultra Low Temperature dehumidifier removes 50 pints of moisture per 24 hours. Ideal for use in wet areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, basements, pool houses and summer homes.

Features:

  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified
  • Ultra Low Temperature Operation
During the spring and fall, basement temperatures typically fall below 65 degrees (F) - especially near the floor. Once the temperature drops below this level, current dehumidifiers quit removing moisture from the air and simply ice up. Even those with dehumidifiers equipped with deicers will begin to freeze up. The deicer will get rid of any ice build up on the unit but ice will quickly reappear. The end result is that the dehumidifier will cycle the compressor on and off frequently without removing water from the air. The Basement Dehumidifier, however, sets a new standard of performance through the use of patented technology that makes it the ONLY dehumidifier on the market that will remove moisture from the air down to 44 degrees (F).
  • AccuDry™ Sensing System
Smarter than average. Whirlpool brand's unique AccuDry™ System revolutionizes air moisture removal. Rather than sensing air moisture levels after dehumidification, like most brands, AccuDry™ senses moisture before it is removed. This allows the dehumidifier to cycle on and off more regularly, providing reliable moisture control. And, the AccuDry™ System exhausts out the back of the unit preventing warm air from blowing directly into the room. Smart innovations to make you more comfortable.
    • Accurately senses air moisture
    • Unique system allows dehumidifier to cycle on and off more regularly
    • Back of unit exhaust keeps warm air from blowing directly into the room
  • 2-Speed Electronic Control Fan
  • EZ-Empty™ Bucket (Front Removable)
  • Bucket Full Indicator Light
Whirlpool's smart dehumidifiers know when they are full. The Bucket Full Light tells you when it is time to empty the bucket and delays operation until you empty it.
  • Adjustable Humidistat
The Adjustable Humidistat allows you to choose the dryness of the room for your family's comfort from normal to dry. The dehumidifier will cycle on and off to maintain your selected level of dryness and comfort.
  • Modern Rounded Styling
With more and more consumers moving their family rooms to the basement, the unique rounded styling and neutral color allow the Whirlpool® dehumidifier to blend into your extended living space.
  • Direct Drain Hose Connection
  • Rust-Resistant Steel Cabinet
  • Drain Hose Connection Cover
  • Washable Electrostatic Filter
Some dehumidifier brands have electrostatic filters that must be thrown away and replaced after their maximum use. Whirlpool brand dehumidifiers feature an electrostatic filter that can easily be washed and returned to the unit for efficient filtration and performance.

First let me say, it beats anything available at the retail store and outperforms what previously owned. We purchased the 50 and were satisfied with most everything until it decided it had to run continuously in our emptied out basement. We have to purchase another or larger unit when the basement is returned to normal finished condition. It is the quietest. Our neighbors purchased the 75pt and feel like it is doing the job but much louder. CK the SqF for max drying capabilities of the machine and then double it! The 50 should have worked but it isn't quite doing the trick. I am totally satisfied with retailer and product but I should have selected one size larger.

Best Uses: Finished basement, Summer Humidity
Cons: Works Too Slowly, Double Ck Area Size

This is my first dehumidifier. The Whirlpool brand was recommended by a friend. It is un beleiveable how much water comes out of the our finished basement. We have never had a problem with mold or the feeling of having a damp basement, but thought it would make the space a more comfortable place to be. Boy has it ever!! I purchased an LG at[...]before this one and it went back. This unit takes out more water and is quieter than the LG. Don't get me wrong this one still makes noise, but it's better. I had to change the 50 pint one above, to the model AD35DSS1 35 pint, which is basically the same but without the electronic control ( who needs it) I have this in my basement and can hardly hear it run, which is about 1,100 sf, I started it at 53% humidity and it took only 3 days to bring it down to 46% This was defective and would Not shut off, I ended up returning it and getting the older more reliable rotary dial type, which can be tuned in to your desired setting as opposed to just 3 settings. Id reccomend ABT to anyone, this was processed and shipped FAST, double boxed, there customer service and Tech. Support is excellant, Whirpool has NONE, they sub there work out, sooo the 1-800 number thats stuck on your new dehumidfer is basically useless for tech. support, if you have a problem they'll tell you where your local service center is. fortunately ABT resolved the problem for me by just taking the old one back, shipping included. I'd buy from this company again.

The humidity in our basement dropped 10% within the first day, but we don't have a drain downstairs and emptied the bucket at LEAST three times those first days! Read the description carefully--if it says 50 pt, that means of the humidity in the air, not the size of the bucket that collects the water! Noisy too, but pros: takes up very little space, saves electricity, and one of the better features is that it has side vents so you can put it against a wall.

I have an old house with a basement pron to dankness. My last Dehumidifier lasted 10 yrs (not bad) but had been off for about 4 months...I definitly needed a new one The Whirlpool 50 Pint fits the bill I ran continuously for about a week before finally drying the place out and beginning to cycle as designed. I have a small pump that takes the water up and out. It was important to me that it fit in the water tank - it did and works great. the Whirlpool 50 Pint is as quiet as you can expect for a unit of this size, and if it lives up to its Energy Star rating I will be a happy camper. The was a little vibration "buzz" at first - the "clamshell" cabinet was vibrating slightly. I simply manipulated the edges of the two halves and the "buzz" stopped and hasnt returned. Very happy with the unit and the fast delivery. I have recommended to my cousin and he has ordered one too.

I have only had this unit about 3 weeks but I read a lot of reviews about dehumidifiers and settled on the Whirlpool. So far I am happy with it. The settings are good - some are very quiet. I hooked up a hose to the drain instead of using the pan and it was a little awkward to connect, but I did get it right! My last unit was a GE and it didn't last as long as I thought it should. The coils kept freezing up. So this one works down to 38 degrees (my other one froze up at 50-55).

Combine an already damp basement with water damage from a leaking laundry tub and it's enough to challenge any dehumidifier...except this one. I have had this set on "continuous run" for over three weeks with no problems whatsoever. The basement is dry and the musty smell is gone. I hesitated at first, because I read several reviews that crticized the noise from this unit. Unless you plan on sitting on top of it, the noise is not a problem. My unit is in the basement (six steps down and separated from the family room by a door) and we cannot hear it running at all. Rather than use the drip bucket, we easily connected a hose and have it emptying into the floor drain. The variety of controls are easy to operate and the unit is easy to move around. I'm very happy with this dehumidifier and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

This is my 2nd AD50 dehumidifier - 1st one is in the basement and this one is in the garage.Seems to work fine, although it does seem to run a fair amount without filling up the small drain pan. My guess is that it doesn't truly do 50 pints per day - at least in cooler weather.Doesn't seem to make sense that the unit is rated for 50 pints but the pan only can handle less than 20.Overall I think it's a decent product for the $$$ - otherwise I wouldn't have bought a 2nd one.[...]

I thought this unit might be too small to handle the humidity in our area of the country. But, it works great. I find that it doesn't even have to work as hard as I though it would. I use it to dehumidify my workshop in a two car + sized garage that is not heated or air conditioned. So it gets VERY humid. My tools were rusting and mold began appearing. Since I turned this on the humidity has dropped to 45-50% and it isn't even on the highest setting.

Never used a dehumidifier before....hooked it up and let it run...quieter than expected. Overnight (about 16 hours) the pan was almost full. After about a week, I hooked in up to my HVAC water pump so I don't need to empty the pan any longer. Had to cut an old hose to do it, but was easy. I use it to pull moisture out of my finished basement, which is dry for the most part except for my large aquarium - alot of evaporation which gets "stuck" in the basement. The question that I have is how long it will last...most of those that get bad reviews are because they last only about a year or so....we'll see about this one - thats why I give it 4 stars instead of 5...in one years time, I may consider dropping it to one star....who knows! :-)

I wanted the one with the drain hose already on it, and honestly thought this one had that, but it didn't. It looks nice, it made me feel competent, and it does the job. The pan fills pretty often, and it is awkward to pull it out - kind of tilts towards you, but the whole thing is just ... attractive. It's audible when I'm on the back steps, but thanks to the lights on it I can eyeball it from there without walking all the way over there and checking the pan. For the money in this range of "WHAT? This unit does everything that it's advertised to do. It's great for removing humidity from basements. Depending on the humidistat adjustment, you will have to empty the water from the resevoir often; However it's very easy. If you have a sink or floor drain near you can hook-up a hose to the unit's drain for continuous draining. The unit does produce sound and produce a little heat. You get use to the sound and the heat in the winter is a plus. If you have a dank basement buy this product.

I placed the dehumidifier in the basement where I felt it was best suited. The basement typically gets damp during the spring to fall months and after three days of use, the dampness subsided as well as the musty smell. For best results, use a drainage hose if possible. When using the water pan, it filled up quick enough to have to be emptied two or three times a day. I used the dehumdifier at its lowest setting which produced noise equivalent to a small air conditioner that was not under strain.

Overall I highly recommend this dehumidifier, particularly if you have a problem area (or a recently wetted or cleaned carpet). Keep in mind with these that the various daily capacities correspond to higher wattages. The 50 pint one here uses about 800 watts which isn't bad, but as I understand it the 70 pint one uses far more (which could be a problem on a shared circuit). However, it has a pretty small tank (in continuous mode we're emptying it about every 6 hours) and it isn't convenient to run it to the drain in the other room so that's our only option. It's also a bit loud when running full-tilt, but being a mini-A/C that's not exactly surprising (and I understand that it's far quieter than other brands).

I bought this product as there were so much rain in my area for the last few months and the humidity inside the house just didn't get improved. I also had some carpet by the window that are damp. By using this de-humidifier, it dried the carpet within a few days of use (room size about 500 sq feet). Then, I moved it to a room (400 sq feet) that felt damp and got improved within a day of use. You can see the results. I like this capacity as it fills up not too fast at night so I don't need to get up and empty water in the middle of the night. I was concerned if this product would be noisy before I used the product. It turned out not bad at all. You may not want it in the same room with you when you sleep, but the noise level is acceptable. No complain on that. All in all, this is a good product for the money. [...]

So far, I'm completely satisfied with this dehumidifier. I bought it even though I had read comments that it was noisy. I've had two previous dehumidifiers and they were all comparable in the noise department. By their nature, dehumidifiers are going to make some noise, but it's nothing I found to be a problem. This unit seems to extract a lot more water out of the air than either prior unit. I find myself having to empty it two or three times a day. I'm going to hook up a hose so it will empty into a drain and eliminate the emptying problem. I haven't had a chance yet to test its energy efficiency. I'll hook up a watt-hour meter soon and see what it says. Unlike the previous two units, this one has both wheels and a handle. You can actually pick it up and move it without cutting your hand on sharp metal edges. The only shortcoming I've found is that there are only three discrete humidity settings. The other units had a knob. While none of the units are calibrated, it was handy to be able to set the unit to something between normal and dry. I recommend this dehumidifier.

Bought this to use in the basement, which was a tad too damp for our tastes (for air-drying non-dryer clothes and storing photographs) and it works quite well. Haven't set up the hose or a pump yet, so we are left to empty the bucket. Some weeks in NJ, we have to do that daily, others we go two or three days before it's full. Sure, as some people note here, it can be loud, but there's a simple fix for that: the OFF switch, while we're down there, or we move it to the unfinished portion, which is why the wheels are nice.

The unit works well, and it's fairly quite. It also has a side exhaust vent and front intake, which means you can put it right against a wall, which saves space. However, there are only three humidity settings, "normal, dry, and max, plus continuous." On the "normal" setting, the humidity will climb to around 65%. On the 'dry" setting, it will lower to around 60%. On the Max setting, it will go below 45%. Most people feel humidity above 50% as being damp or even wet. If you get much below 40% your eyes dry out. What moron would design a product like this with the inability to dial in humidity to around 45-50%? Ridiculous.

Our last whirlpool DH died after about 4 years. I think that the fact it iced over so much helped "kill" it...that's a lot of stress on these things. This one truly doesn't freeze up...EVER. The controls have more options too re. fan speed, humidistat & auto settings. Finally, the hose connects directly to the collection plate below the coils, NOT to the bucket itself. This means you don't have a partially-filled bucket all the time that stagnates & mildews. So far, it's a great unit at a price comparable to others w/similar capacities that lack the ability to eliminate freeze-ups.

I have read other reviews that mention this being noisy. I can only compare it with the older dehumidifiers I have used (and currently am running one along with this new one). Compared to my old dehumidifier, this one IS quiet! It draws humidity out of the air very efficiently and does not ice up the way my old one does. Also, having the bucket built into the body gives this model a much smaller footprint. (My old dehumidifier has the bucket hanging off the back of it). I am using it in the basement, and have to empty the bucket twice a day! THAT indicates how well this dehumidifier works. It is nice to have the automatic shut off feature, as well as automatically starting back up when the empty bucket is returned to the proper position. I would not hesitate recommending this, which is why I am taking the time to write a review about it. [...]

I have it set on the "normal" humidity and it seems to work very well. At this point it is too soon to tell how energy efficient it really is. Very easy to unload the internal bucket and also easy to attach a hose. I have the hose going into a very very large bucket, but I wish the hose could sense when the water in the large bucket is higher than the hose opening and shut off the unit. I don't have a drain in my basement floor so I need to use the very very large bucket to keep the humidifier from constantly shutting off when the internal bucket is full.

Electronic controls are easy to use but do not indicate exact humidity levels ("normal", "dry", "very dry") but seem to hold humidity at appropriate levels. Easy hookup for drain hose.

We bought a house with a finished basement that had a stinky mildew smell in it. The air seems much dryer since we bought this unit. We put it on max dry and had it drain through a hose into the sump pit. It stayed on for a few days while it dried out the room and now seems to cycle on and off as its needed. Its pretty quiet too, but its in a utility closet in the basement, so we never hear it anyway. I haven't had it long enough to know how much energy its using, but so far, so good.

On auto or low settings it is a lot quieter than previous dehumidifiers I've owned. It is mostly plastic, so it is a lot lighter and easier to move around too. The only possible con is that the internal water collection tank isn't all that big so you have to empty it more frequently than some other units and that is it a bit easier to spill than others as well (top of tank is fully open vs. a hole the the water enters through. But it is the best dehumilifier I've ever owned.

Keeps our basement really dry and the price was the best I could find on the web. It's lightweight, has wheels for easy transport and appears to be energy efficient. However, it's a little louder than I expected it to be (fortunately it's in the basement so noise isn't an issue for us) and the water pan looks smaller than 50 pints compared to our old dehumidifier which held 45 pints in a bigger water pan. Overall, I'm still pleased I bought this product and would recommend it to anyone in need of a basement dehumidifier. It works really well and didn't cost too much.

It's very easy to move and pulls an incredible amount of water out of the basement. I was surprised at how damp the basement must have been before we started using it. I have no complaints at this time on the unit. A great item for its price!

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
Product meets or exceeds my expectations for a unit of this type. Main Benefit is the cold temperature operation to 38 degrees F. this is a big plus in the fall and winter months if you use your basement year round. Water Removal is easy from lower front of unit and it is neatly styled as well. Along with removing the dampness in my basement it had the added benefit of drying wash and hang dry items much faster than they previously took to dry. If empying the water container is a bother an automatic pump system is available from the manufacturer as an accesory item to avoid the problem of emptying the unit. Electronic controls, sleek styling, two fan speeds and the unit shuts off automatically when the water container is full. I did not comment on noise levels good or bad as to me noise is a relative thing based on your sensitivity to sound in general but it is not excessively noisy in my opinion. Unpack it and your up and running in practically no time at all. If your considering a dehumidifier for a moderately damp basement this unit would make an excellent choice!
Cons: Auto Water Pump Needed, To Drain To Outside

This unit was purchased to replace an older malfunctioning dehumidifier in my basement. The new has the ability to work at substantially lower temperatures which is perfect for a basement - especially in Michigan. The controls are easy to use and self-explanatory. The unit is quite a bit louder than the old unit - I can hear it upstairs when everything is quiet, but I'm pleased with the performance and it's not so loud that I would consider a different model, etc. If it were used on a main floor where you live, it could be too loud for you.

We have a much-used laundry area located in an unfinished portion of a damp basement...which even has had standing water that seeps in during rainy weather. We also have a spare bedroom in the finished portion of the basement (on the other side of the wall/door from the laundry) that has felt damp and smelled musty, etc. We set our new 50 pint dehumidifier up in the laundry area a week ago, selected "max. dry" and "automatic", and let it run. Not only has it removed the excess moisture and dampness to perfection, we even made it through a recent rain without any seepage on the floor! The bedroom feels pleasant and usable again. Fantastic!! We couldn't have asked for anything more. The collention container is extremely easy to access and empty; the unit even switches off whenever you remove the container, then switches back on automatically when you replace it. Oh...and it is quieter than either the fan in the bedroom, or the dryer in the laundry, so we don't even notice when it switches on. A fabulous value for the $$.
