Features:

  • Walkman redefined
Packing audiophile performance into a pocket-sized player, the A17 Hi-Res Audio Digital Music Player sets an exciting new benchmark in sound and style. And with 64 GB of built-in memory1, microSD memory card slot, and up to 50-hours of music playback on a single charge2, you've got studio quality sound in your pocket wherever you go.
  • Treat your ears!
Capable of handling a variety of digital audio formats, ranging from standard CD-ripped tunes, to 192kHz/24-bit high-resolution audio, the A17 delivers sound that is up to 6-times the resolution when compared to a standard CD, providing support MP3, WMA, WMA lossless, AAC, FLAC, AIFF, WAV, and ALAC, for a sublime audio experience.
  • Powerful Sound
An aluminum die-cast frame and redesigned circuitry form the core of the NWZ-A17SLV. Borrowing a few tricks from our accomplished ES home audio lineup, the low-impedance circuit board using Sony high-purity lead-free solder ensures efficient, spacious, and natural sound.
  • Two features driving quality sound
S-Master® HX digital amplification, uniquely developed for high resolution audio playback, delivers faithful, detailedwide-frequency audio reproduction. DSEE HX works in two ways to delivers natural, spacious sound. First, it restores the high frequency signals stripped by the audio compression process. Second, it can accurately expand audio signal bit-depth, in real-time, to near hi-resolution sound quality.
  • Exceptional battery life
A built-in lithium ion battery paired with thick, low-resistance cable ensures that power is on-tap for demanding musical passages while also providing up to 50 hours of audio playback (MP3)/ up to 30 hours (Hi-Res) per charge.2
  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming
Communications (NFC) technology.3 And with built-in AAC and aptX® codec support, you will enjoy maximized signal quality when streaming your music wirelessly.
  • Room for your tunes!
With 64 GB of internal memory1, the A17 has enough storage for about 200 high-resolution tracks*, but thanks to the built-in memory card slot, serious users with large music collections can add an additional 128GB, bringing the total memory capacity up to 192 GB1, or enough storage for about 600 high-resolution tracks*. * - 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC files
  • Drag and Drop
With a Walkman® player, you are never tied to just one music service. Just drag and drop files from iTunes® for Mac® or Windows® and enjoy. Multi-format playback also lets you play MP3, WMA, AAC or L-PCM music files; now that's freedom.
  • Easily Navigate Your Tracks
While the 2.25" QVGA anti-reflective TFT LCD display reveals album artwork, photos, and even videos in rich, clear brilliance, the multi-function directional keys makes searching for the right song a breeze. Spend more time listening than fumbling through your music.

I extensively researched all of the currently available Hi-Res audio players currently available. This Sony unit is by far the most complete player currently available in this price range. I have owned the NWZ-A17 for 3 days now and after listening to it extensively I have to say I am quite happy with it. The positives include a very detailed sound and excellent tight bass. The battery life compared to other Hi-Res units is excellent at 30 hours for high resolution playback. The user interface while basic is very easy to navigate and quite snappy. I also love the excellent Sony Media Go software which I use for most audio related functions. One of the few negatives with this player is the lack of power compared to the other units out there. It will need to be paired with an efficient pair of headphones to get decent volume. The soundstage is also a little narrow compared to other players. I have been using the Matrix audio enhancement option which helps create a fuller sound with all other audio options turned off. The DSEE HX option does help somewhat when playing compressed audio files often bringing the vocals more forward. The Clear+ function actually makes the sound worse in my opinion making the sound seem thuddy and unbalanced. I have my unit loaded with a mix of lossless FLAC files both 24 bit and16 bit, and some mp3's at 320 kbps. This unit plays them all flawlessly with no perceptible delay when switching between songs with different bit rates. There are arguably better sounding portable music players out there in this price range but you will have to make compromises compared with this player. None of the other players I looked at could compare to the NWZ-A17 in terms of battery life, onboard memory, stability and usability at this price level. The build quality of the Sony is excellent and I have not had any issues with the unit at all. I have not yet added a micro sd card or used the Bluetooth features so I can't comment on their functionality. If you are in the market for a High Resolution player you should definitely consider the NWZ-A17.

I am running 44Khz 16-bit FLAC on it so far. The sound quality is fine, using with my Pendulumic Stancs S1+ aptX bluetooth headphones, though usually I am running a wired connection, because the bluetooth on this Sony NWZ-A17 sucks. Using my Pendulumic headphones with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 I am able to achieve 150 to 200 feet of range over the bluetooth connection even though it's only a Class II (2.5 mW - 10 meter) bluetooth device. Well with the Sony I am getting what is more like Class III (1mW - 1 meter) range, I can barely get a few feet (less than 10 feet) and the signal is breaking up. Even just 3 feet away the signal cuts out completely if I put my hand over the Sony Walkman with it in my pocket. My hand blocks the signal just 3 feet away from the headphones! That's terrible! I have tested this with many, many other bluetooth devices as well, I am just using the headphones as an example because it has an amazing receiving range. The JBL J46BT bluetooth earbuds I frequently use don't work very well with the Sony walkman, the connection takes almost a minute to establish and the range is about an arms length at best. These same earbuds by JBL work well over +120 feet with my Samsung tablet! Testing at work I get a really amazing range due to limited interference from other devices. At home the range is pretty terrible due to all the 2.4Ghz activity present. The range this Sony NWZ-A17 has with bluetooth is comparable to a USB bluetooth dongle such as Asus makes (USB-BT400 for example) which is terrible to make a long story short, it's very weak barely working over a few feet, not even across a room without breaking up. I believe this is mainly due to a lack of antenna, rather than transmitting power (2,5mW in this case). For $300 I expect a little better bluetooth apparatus. Considering the fact that aptX bluetooth is one of the main reasons I bought this is a pretty big deal, and a pretty big disappointment for me. How can a device so new only use bluetooth 2.1? The 2.1 EDR standard has been around for 8 years now! Bluetooth 4.0 has been around for several years now, how come the Sony NWZ-A17 doesn't have bluetooth 4.0??? This is really pathetic. I don't recommend this product if you plan on using the bluetooth at all. The battery life is pretty good on it, I use it daily and barely charge it once a week, less than that even. Volume level is pretty good, controls easy to use, my main complaint is the bluetooth but aside from that it's OK. Maybe a little overpriced, and I am disappointing with it, but I am making it work.

Gear sound-clunky software

By

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

Really fine sound reproduction, to my ears better than iPod. But, the software is really far more difficult and less intuitive than Apple's. Also, no earbud come with the unit and at this price you would expect them.

Great replacement for the IPOD classic

By

from 32578

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

I bought this to replace my IPOD classic. (Which I had that for many years and could not find anything that could better it). This does everything the IPOD did and then some. Sound quality is great. even with the BT headphones. Only gripe --- connector...It is not a micro USB connector. I have several USB cables for phone/tablet ect. that I have to swap one out for, when I want to charge this. However I love the battery life, I charge it about once a week. It is very light and easy to run with.

Almost perfect

By

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

Great replacement for iPod. Simple to use. Great sound & multiple file format support. The inboard amp is not strong enough for 'big' headphones, but as this is a portable music player, most of users will use it will smaller headphones like earbuds. If you are new to Hi-Res music, be advised that the 64G inboard memory is just enough for about 50 albums. Even lossless music #not Hi-Res# sounds crisp et detailed compared to compressed mp3 files. Very happy with drag & drop within file explorer in Windows, really simple & convenient.

The Slight Reinvention of Walkman

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

Sony never fails to please in the business of consumer electronics. This Walkman, is no exception to the rule. Boasting 64 GB of storage and support for lossless audio formats, the music lover wont find any issues with the player. Audio is crisp, and when the files are FLAC or WAV, the player really shows what its made of! The construction is good, the interface is easy and familiar to use. So far I've been listening to CD's that i've imported to FLAC, and they sound fantastic. The Walkman, slightly reinvented! Now I can rid my computer of everything Apple. The day has come!

Great Player

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

I really like the player for its storage and Bluetooth capabilities. It can hold all my Cd's in MP3 format and still have room to grow. I wish Sony would have allowed other devices to sink with their software. It is a nice program for my music but it sucks I have to have 2 different libraries up to date. Reminds me of Apple. Will never own a apple product!

Blue Screen Error on Computer

By

from Crystal Lake, IL 60012, USA

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

I love my new walkman, however I am having trouble when memory is set to system storage. When I try to connect to my laptop to manage music, I immediately get a blue screen error. I don't get the error if the walkman has the SD card selected. As far as operation and playback it is great, but I am rather frustrated that I have connection issues.

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

Sound is very good.and it is nice and small Interface is,as one MIllenial put it, "So 1990s". Tons of icons you dont need and tiny music and setting icons. Difficlut to navigate and no wheel. No interface with Apple products so transferring music is a disaster.

Not worth the money.

By

Comments about Sony 64GB Silver Hi-Res Walkman Digital Music Player:

The software sucks. It often does not sync the first track. Often, and very often, it gives as many as 3 copies of the same track. It is not easy to delete these extraneous tracks. The manual is skimpy and not what you would expect for such an expensive item.
