Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera - ILCE-7M2K/B

Engage with your subject when using this Sony Alpha a7S digital mirrorless camera. It's ideal for long expeditions and hikes thanks to its ultra-light design, which does away with the traditional mirror to reduce weight and bulk. As a result, this mirrorless digital camera is easier to hold, yet it still includes a full-frame sensor so that you can take advantage of rapid BIONZ X image processing and exceptional light-gathering capabilities for impressive performance even when the light is low.

Optical image stabilization from this full-frame digital camera reduces the effects of hand shake, letting you use a shutter speed that's up to 4.5 steps slower than normal. In addition, this also works with the 4K movie output, which you can save to an external source uncompressed or save it compressed within the camera. When used with a stepping motor-powered lens, this camera ensures impressive audio without the traditional grind, yet it still focuses rapidly on your subject. This Sony Alpha a7S digital mirrorless camera takes standard SD cards and is compatible with a wide range of E-mount lenses to create the perfect setup for your needs.

Key Features:

  • 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization for still images and movies
  • Use all of your favorite lenses without camera shake or blur
  • Full Frame 24.3 MP resolution w/ Gapless On-chip Lens Design
  • Fast Hybrid AF w/ phase-detection; 30% quicker than a7
  • Compatible w/ Sony’s E-mount and other lenses with adaptors
  • High contrast 2.4-million dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing
  • 50Mbps XAVC S 1920x1080 at 60P, 1280x720 at 120P
  • 3.0" tiltable LCD for easy high and low angle framing
  • Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi® or NFC
  • PC control w/ remote video capture control

Features:

  • World's first 5-axis in-body image stabilization in a full-frame camera.

Reduce blur caused by camera shake from five different directions—vertical, horizontal, pitch, yaw and roll—as opposed to only two in previous systems. The 5-axis image stabilizing system excels during video recording and even compensates for blur caused by the photographer walking or running. It’s a true marvel of engineering.

  • Use your favorite lenses with minimized blur from camera shake.

With image stabilization built it into the body of the camera itself, mounted lenses—even A-mount or non-Sony lenses using an adaptor 2—can utilize the 5-axis image stabilization for both still images and video. It even enhances lenses that already have optical image stabilization systems.

  • Full-frame, 24.3 MP resolution

Capture stunning images with 24.3MP resolution, a 35mm full-frame sensor, a normal sensor range of ISO 100–25600, and a sophisticated balance of high-resolving power, gradation and low noise. The BIONZ® X image processor enables up to 5 fps high-speed continuous shooting and high-50Mb/s XAVC S video recording.

  • Fast hybrid AF with phase-detection - 30% faster than á7.

This fast hybrid autofocus system utilizes 117 phase-detection points and 25 contrast-detection points. Updated from the á7, this new autofocus algorithm improves subject-tracking performance and focusing speed by approximately 30%.

  • Utilizes Sony's E-mount lens system.

Take advantage of the growing family of E-mount lenses, including G Series and ZEISS®. The E-mount lens system is particularly well-suited for video shooting, with a variety of models containing “movie-friendly” features like smooth focusing, powered zoom control and silent iris/aperture control.

  • High contrast, 2.4-million dot OLED EVF for eye-level framing.

View every scene in rich detail with the XGA OLED Tru-Finder, which features OLED improvements and 3-lens optical system. The viewfinder faithfully displays what will appear in your recording, including the effects of your camera settings, so you can accurately monitor the results. You’ll enjoy rich tonal gradations and high-end features like 100% frame coverage, a wide viewing angle, and more.

  • Record Full HD in XAVC S format up to 50Mb/s.

The á7II adopts the high bitrate, workflow-friendly XAVC S recording format in addition to AVCHD and MP4 codecs. XAVC S format allows for Full HD recording at a data rate of 50 mbps with lower compression for improved video quality. The á7II can record Full HD (1920x1080) at frame rates of 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p directly to a compatible memory card. Video modes can be changed from full-frame to APS-C (super 35mm equivalent) if desired, which best matches video captured on Super 35 cameras.

  • 3 LCD screen tilts up and down for easy high and low-angle framing.

The tiltable 3” (1,229k dots) Xtra Fine™ LCD Display makes it easy to photograph over crowds, or low to capture pets eye-to-eye by swinging up approx. 90° and down approx. 45°. Easily scroll through menus and preview life thanks to WhiteMagic™ technology that dramatically increases visibility in bright daylight. The large display delivers brilliant-quality still images and movies while enabling easy focusing operation.

  • Simple connectivity to smartphones via Wi-Fi®/ NFC.

Connectivity with smartphones for One-touch sharing/One-touch remote has been simplified with Wi-Fi®/NFC control. In addition to Wi-Fi support for connecting to smartphones, á7II also supports NFC (near field communication) providing “one-touch connection” convenience when transferring images to Android™ smartphones and tablets with NFC. Simply touch devices to connect.

  • Tether your camcera to a PC for Remote Camera Control.

Remote Camera Control allows you to control your á7II from your PC and transfer files using a USB cable. Feature control has also been updated to include video capture control.

I sold all my gear, A550, A580, 70-400 G lens , Zeiss 16-80 lens along with several other lens to purchased the ILCE-7M2 in March along with the Sony Zeiss 24-70 F/4 OSS lens. I was really concerned because I didn’t think any thing could replace my A580 and the Sweet Zeiss 16-80. You can put all that aside, the 7M2 and the Zeiss 24-70 along with the 5-axis in-body image stabilization is awesome. I do more landscapes than birds so the full frame cameras was perfect for me. The 7M2 was the alternative to the heavy large cameras and lens that a full frame provided. I am an old grandfather that loves to take pictures and this 7M2 was perfect for me. Light weight with plenty of lens to choose from. I have purchased the FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS Full-frame E-mount Zoom Lens and Sonnar T* FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Full-frame E-mount Prime Lens. With this camera they are perfect, sharp, and the quality of the images are outstanding. The thing that really impressed me was back in the day when I used my A550 and A580 I had to travel with a tripod all the time. Now with the 5 - axis image stabilization I can leave the tripod at home and really enjoy shooting landscapes again. However, I still use the tripod at times in low light situations. There is a feature that is right on par, that would be the Continuous Bracket mode. Were you set the Ev and the number of Images. I realize that this is an fully electronic camera so the battery life would not be very long so I purchased the VGC2EM Vertical Grip and extra batteries. Glad I did, because now shooting vertical is so much easier and the extra batteries, no worries. I know that there are a lot of people that just can’t get into the mirrorless camera system and I was one of them. Now I can’t let go. This is by far the best camera I have ever owned and with all the lens that are coming out it just get better and better. I can’t find a thing I can talk about that isn’t pro about this camera. I know that sounds crazy, but if pick up one you will never let go. I didn’t get this camera for it’s Video capabilities and I have not even try it out yet, so the video review will have to come later. I really want to like this camera. In addition to the camera and kit lens, I also have the 55mm F/1.8, 16-35mm F/4, and 70-200mm F/4 lenses. I like the color and contrast of these lenses. The camera is light and has a lot of useful features. However, there is one fatal flaw: the auto focus is inconsistent and inaccurate at times. I have contacted Sony support and they escalated the issue to Level II support. A few days later, I received a phone call from them at 7am in the morning and left me a voice mail. He asked me to write down my issues in email and sent to them. So I did. But I still have not heard back from them. Let me state my AF issue here. Some of my photos turn out slightly blurry. I have been trying to figure out how to improve it for a few months. Then I did the following experiments and believe that Sony A7II's AF is not accurate and inconsistent under certain conditions: The experiment is as follows. Use the 55mm F/1.8 lens and set the camera at AF-S, aperture priority, center focus, and auto ISO. Try to use the AF function to lock the focus with aperture at F/1.8. Then try again at F/22. F/22 would take longer to focus, which one would think is fine. Then please switch to AF-C. This will allows the camera to continuously focus on the subject. Try to focus with aperture at F/1.8 and F/22 again. You will find that the camera cannot lock the focus at F/22, or take much longer time to lock than AF-S. It also appears to me that the AF-C with F/22 does not lock the focus and it simply times out. This indicates that AF-S does not always give you the accurate focus you need. I can demonstrate the AF problem consistently. Depending on the lighting condition, it shows as early as F/4.0. Mirrorless camera has come a long way. But I am very disappointed that the single most important function, auto focus, is so poor.

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

I have bought and returned/sold many cameras over the past year and I will say I am FINALLY content. Once I saw the image quality from this camera I was instantly a fan. Sony is where it's at. And they are at ABT ;)

Poor quality, shutter locks up in 2 weeks (new)

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

In the middle of a photo shoot (~ 3 weeks after purchase), the shuttler locks up which renders this camera inoperable. We have no choice but to send this 3 week camera to a SONY authorized service centre for repair. After 2 1/2 months of wait, it finally returned. Upon inspection there were screwdriver scratch marks near the gourmet doors and some minor scratches on the LCD. The worst part is that one side/corner of the LCD does not properly fold back onto the camera thus it makes squeaking sound when it is lightly pressed. Where is the quality SONY was known for when I purchase my DSR-S70 camera? I hate to say it but this might be my last SONY camera.

    Best Purchase Ever

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

Had the camera so far for quite a few months. Bought it with the battery grip and kit lens. Speaking of the kit lens, even though is not a very fast lens, the image quality is surprisingly very good - at least for me it is. My old manual lens collection loves this camera as well, they are finally off the shelf and put to good use. Both pictures attached were taken with old manual primes.

I paired the A7II with the Zeiss 55mm F1.8. Very sharp image and better than my canon 6D. Beautiful low light images.

    Nice Camera

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

Before this, I had an a7. The Mark II is definitely nice. The autofocus, while improved, isn't something I'd consider a significant betterment of this camera. Still don't like how a lot of its functions, including the EVF, are battery-drainers. In order to get the most out of the batteries, I keep mine in Airport Mode at all times. All-in-all: 8/10. The Zeiss glass made me come back to Sony over Canon.

    Great Camera So Far!

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

Purchased this camera from the South Coast Plaza location. The manager was really helpful and made the sale go smooth. I would say i am a beginner to moderate skill level with these types of camera's, so i am in no way going to get into all kinds of advanced camera lingo yet. haha It feels rock solid, lense interchange is fast and easy. As you can see from the photo, it is super crisp and colors appear to be great. Can't wait get get a Zeiss Prime Lense and mess around with it more!

Great, needs to work better with Canon lenses

Comments about Sony Professional Capability Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera:

I am a professional cameraman and use the A7ii exclusively for video. I just got back from Africa where I used it for the first time. I had no problems with overheating and the ambiant temperature was 43 degres Celcius. The camera didn't turn on a couple of times, with only a partial screen appearing. I had to turn it off and on twice to get the camera to work again. I use Canon lenses with the Metabones adapter. The autofocus is very slow, unusable in video. Peaking does not work, nor does focus magnify. I am very happy with the image quality and colors. I wish all the features worked with Canon lenses as they are better quality than the ones available from Sony. Plus, I would hate to have to change them all! Stabilisation works well for hand-held shots, but it doesn't replace a steadycam device because although you can hold it static and have a reasonably stable image, you can't walk with it. Overall, a great camera and looking forward to any improvements!
