I nearly bypassed this product due to its 2.5 rating, but I am glad I spent the time to realize that for one rating, the poster was so upset about a "heating unit" in another model that it affected every other KitchenAid model including how loud this unit sounded. This is a very good and versatile Microwave and I think anyone who needs these features would be happy. While I think it is honorable that KitchenAid did not censor that review, it is sad that someone is so spiteful as to degrade one of the more versatile products available as an over-the-range microwave, despite it unlikely being the model whose "heating unit" is so unnerving.

This unit replaces an older Whirlpool model that lasted over 7 years, but had issues with its fan. That unit had similar features and could still be purchased, but I had hopes that this unit would be a bit better. In some ways it is and in some ways it is not, but overall I am very pleased with this oven.

I tend to agree with the other review (from someone who actually has seen/touched this machine) that the platter support is surprisingly flimsy for a product at this price level. I wish the four-point support from my old microwave could have fit this unit.

The manual is of limited help. It does not tell you which features will be used for each cooking activity (e.g., whether the grilling rods or the microwave will be used or both), but I guess it assumes that we will figure this out eventually. I like the fact that it has presets for many common foods and was surprised that it had one for the Hash Browns my daughter brought home. I had a great idea for trying it out for cooking some Chinese style roast pork and a slight extension of the "pork chops" setting gave me better results than my traditional oven ever did. Indeed, I am happy with this product.

The controls are well thought-out and I like the fan timer feature especially since it allows me to set it to turn off in an hour. I do wish someone would invent a fan switch that doesn't force you to cycle through every speed setting to turn it on and off. This one has six such settings to go through and it is a pain, but the fan is significantly quieter and more effective than the unit it replaced. I also like the placement of the lamps over the stove which offer significantly better illumination than the Whirlpool unit offered (that unit had the lights closer to the front).

It seems that there are few retail stores which have this on display and even fewer that have it plugged in. In this modern age of the internet, I think we would still like to be able to hear what the fan sounds like and see what the prompts are on the display or see how bright the lights are for the stove below. No. You must buy it, install it, and then decide if you can't use it.

With regard to the above, my wife has a vision disability and some Microwave displays are nearly impossible for her to use. Thankfully, this one is clear and bright enough for her to use. That is not as true for the various flat panel buttons (marked popcorn, grill, numbers 0-9, etc). These are nearly impossible to see and they are not illuminated (one store clerk said, "maybe they light up"...they don't). Our old machine had physical push buttons for the light and the fan which my wife could find by touch. Here, every button is identically as flat as the space next to it and the button next to that space. I know it would take some consideration by the vendor, add cost, and possibly detract from the appearance, but it would be nice if there were some texture to at least the lamp, fan, start and cancel buttons.

I have reasonably good vision, but even I find that while I am watching the display that is about 8" away from the fan button so I know how many more times I have to press it to get the fan off, my finger sometimes will "wander" slightly off the button center and force me to re-position my finger. Not a major criticism, but I think it would benefit all users if there were some differentiation.

Another minor annoyance is the way the cooking feature prompts you for various phases of cooking (i.e., heating the crisp pan, time to turn over the steak). Either in the user manual or on the screen display, it would be extremely useful to know how much time before the next action I need to take. French Fries do not have a "turn over" step because they use the grill to brown the top. However, Hash Browns require a "turn over" step. To use these pre-programmed settings, you have to stay within ear shot of microwave so that you can know that it has pre-heated the crisp pan. You never know in advance how much time that will need. You never know at what point it will stop and tell you to turn something over (generally about halfway through the cooking, but you get the idea). Having it explain how long to the next action is as important here as it is in a GPS. I do not understand how this is not automatically included here in the 21st century. It is hardly rocket science.

Another annoyance is the timid little tone that it emits to tell you to turn something over or that cooking is complete. In addition to her vision problems, my wife has severe nerve deafness. Plus, the designers might have thought there is a possibility that the units fan might also be in use at one time or another. The timid little tone is audible and distinct enough to be heard in another room if you are attuned to it, but the first thing I called support about was to ask if there was a way to set a louder tone (there isn't). The customer service representative commiserated since she would have also liked to have that feature.

All in all, it is the design of the controls and the fan switch and the support rack for the glass turntable and the timid little tone that detract from this otherwise excellent product.

I think the negatives are far outweighed by the positives and if you want the features this microwave has, you will be happier with this than the other alternatives currently available in the market.

The ventilation works well and the microwave itself is as powerful as the unit it replaced. I am very pleased with this oven and hope it lasts as long as the model it replaced.

Beware Do not buy this product or you will be in the same boat that I am in. Purchasing my 3rd microwave unit in less than 4 years; there are design flaws with the higher end Kitchen Aid Microwaves that causes the heating element to fail and the company is refusing to acknowledge. I have purchased two of these higher end units and both have lasted less than 3 years. When I asked the company to stand behind the quality and workmanship of their product; they refused and lectured me on purchasing an extended warranty. After numerous emails and post on social media; there response was to offer me a new unit at discounted price that was basically the same price as what the major retailers sell the unit for, at some retailers Kitchen Aid's discounted was actually higher. As a consumer I do not mind spending money on a quality product, but to invest in their product not once but twice with the exact same outcome and Kitchen Aid to refuse to offer a fair resolution after I have spent over $2000 on two different microwaves speaks volumes on not only the workmanship and the quality of the product but ethics of the company and their responsiveness. Consumers should invest their appliances that are made by companies that will stand behind and acknowledge and resolve issues to the customer's satisfaction with the quality and workmanship of their product. Kitchen Aid consumers are willing to invest in your products but Kitchen Aid is not willing to invest in the consumer when their product fails.

Microwave

Comments about KitchenAid Stainless Steel Over-The-Range Microwave Oven:

I absolutely hate this microwave..my.old Kitchenaide was more user friendly, and unfortunately you do.not make it anymore. There were buttons on the front which turned on the light, and fan, and I did not have to turn on the big kitchen light to find the button. The handle on this microwave is 3 1/2 inches from the end of the door and I hit my face every time I open it.The handle should be at the end of the door!!The cooking features are very vague and do not light up as previously in older microwave. Its saf that one has to pay so much money thinking your going to get another quality product from kitchenaide, inly to be disappointed.I have had kitchenaide appliances for 12 years, and loved them, but now when one needs to be replaced its garbage..My old appliances still work great and love them.I also had to replace my refrigerator due to.hurricane Matthew, and it is also horrible, quality is poor, makes a humming sound and not fully stainless steel.I will no longer buu kitchenaide appliances at this point, also I cannot match up sets to certain series I purchased in the past..

Looks phenomenal, cooks very fast!

Did I say looks phenomenal?
Pros: Does the job. Easy to install. Not too complicated. Microwave is quiet.
Cons: stainless steel leaves fingerprints. The door is very wide so the arc for the swing of the door needs plenty of room. Even when vented outside the fan is loud ( but strong ).

Went for Top of the Line microwave.

By

from Prescott, AZ

Comments about KitchenAid Stainless Steel Over-The-Range Microwave Oven:

Sweet microwave, quiet operation. Good power, large capacity. Sensor function not obvious, but an integral part of Cook functions. Haven't tested convection yet. The sound (tone) is too soft, and needs a volume control. It can only be set 0 (off) or 1 (on). The touch panel would be better if back lit. A little disappointing was that the Jan 2016 User Guide that came with the product is newer than the latest available online, Mary 2014, from KitchenAid.
