Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens - SAL35F18

You can shoot anything from landscapes to portraits with this lens, without ever feeling that the large F1.8 maximum apeture is another advantage: bright enough to allow hand-held shooting in low light, and capable of producing smooth defocusing effects that can add depth and artistic elegance to your images. As a bonus, it is small and lightweight making it unobtrusive on the camera, in a bag, or even in a pocket!

Features:

  • Large F1.8 maximum aperture
In combination with the in-body image stabilization provided by á series cameras, the bright F1.8 maximum aperture of this lens offers a significant advantage for hand-held shooting in low-light situations. The high resolution of this prime lens and the smooth defocusing achieved by its large F1.8 aperture can be utilized to create images that have impressive depth and three-dimensionality
  • SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor)
Autofocus signals received from the camera body control a motor built into the lens. The internal motor directly drives the focusing group for smooth autofocus operation
  • Uncompromised basic features
At 0.23 meters the minimum focusing the SAL35F18 makes it possible to move in for spectacular close-ups. The front filter mount does not rotate when the lens focuses, and this is a distinct advantage for polarizing filter use. A distance scale is also provided

Great DT Lens

By

from Galveston, TX

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

This is great lens for $200. It's tack sharp and great in low light. The build is decent for this price level but the upside of that is, it's ultra light. This is a great normal prime for the DT camera.

Wide angle?

By

from Roseville California

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

Let me start out by saying that I returned this item. I am absolutely a Sony man all the way. I was looking for a lens that was wide angle and fixed. While I could get low light shots, that was great. But I wanted a wide angle lens and this is not, in my opinion, a wide-angle lens. So this is not a bad review by any means. I love Sony and would never give them a bad review unless they deserved it… But they never have

Great lens, but questionably spendy

By

from Portland, Oregon

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

I bought this lens based on the reviews, and it is no doubt one of the best lenses I've ever owned. Very sharp and has an almost ideal focal length for the NEX. The autofocus is a little slow in lower light, and I'm more dependent on continuous AF than other lenses. While the lens is generally amazing, I think it is only marginally better than other lenses that cost much less, including the Sigma 30 (though it doesn't have OSS). In my opinion, it is not as good as the SEL 50 1.8, which costs less as well. Granted, the 35mm focal length has a different "look", but you have to question the price difference compared to the 50. In all, it is the essential prime for the NEX (IMO) and it stays attached to my NEX 6 almost all of the time, which says something.

Clear , Crisp and alright!

By

from New Jersey, USA

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

Got this lens last April 2013 and so impressed with the quality of the pictures I had taken. Lens was so quick to focus and shots were so crisp. Low -light shots for indoors is now less of a problem.

Save some money. Buy this over the Zeiss 24/1.8

By

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

Previously I was using the Sony Zeiss 24/1.8 as my main lens on the NEX-5N. I liked it a lot but always wondered if it really was worth $1100. About a month ago, I bought a M-Mount Zeiss lens and realized the 24/1.8 didn't seem like it was worth the money anymore. I played around with other M-mount lenses but missed having AF. Eventually I bought the Sony 35mm/1.8. I wasn't expecting much from the 35/1.8 (especially since it was a pure sony design) I was blown away by how wrong I was. If you look at the two pictures I attached, the 35mm 1.8 is capable of some very nice details. At 1.8 it's a little softer but once you stop down, it gets very sharp The biggest thing I like about this lens, over the Zeiss 24/1.8, is it has optical stabilization. You can get sharp shots at 1/15s shutter speed and have a decent chance at 1/5s. So you can use lower ISO numbers indoors, compared to the 24/1.8. With the money you save from buying this over the 24/1.8, you can go buy another lens for your set.

Plastic Fantastic

By

from Florida

Pros

  • Sharp centers, light weight, cheap

Cons

  • Loud AF, soft corners at 1.8

Best Uses

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

This is a very good lens for the price. Sony's higher end version sells for $1500, and doesn't offer 7 times the performance. Physically, this is a small lens that's made of plastic. The mount is plastic and that may be a turn-off to enthusiasts. This makes it super light weight. As for image quality, it's not so great at f/1.8 because of the soft corners and minor light fall off around the edges. But once you stop down to f/2.8, it's heaven. Great overall sharpness there and no light fall off at all.. That's still plenty good for low-light situations. My Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 needs to stop down to f/4 to match this lens. Distortion is minimal. The AF motor makes a fair amount of noise. It's not bothersome at all, but it's obviously not good for video. Focus speed is good. It doesn't work on Full Frame, but that's a good thing because this would probably be horrible on a FF camera. If you're using a Full Frame camera, you probably wouldn't be looking at a $200 lens.

    correction of title / description

    By

    from Vancouver, BC

    Pros

    • Good product

    Cons

    • mistake in title-description

    Best Uses

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

The editor made a mistake. This is a 35mm lens. With a so-called crop factor of 1.51 it may be compared to a 52.5mm lens on a full-frame camera, but nevertheless this is a 35mm lens.

Fantastic images at low cost (comparatively)

      By

      Pros

      • Low light performance

      Cons

      • None.

      Best Uses

Comments about Sony DT 35mm F1.8 SAM Prime Lens:

I purchased this lens for my a35 camera after it was recommended that I add a fixed focus prime lens in my bag. I read a number of reviews and I'm extremely happy with my choice. The level of performance is fantastic. Hand held pictures remained clear in low light and the bokeh is awesome (the pics I posted don't do it justice). I highly recommend this lens. Note, I'm not sure whether a 35mm combined w/ a camera with an aps sensor is the equivalent of a traditional 50mm film lens, but I chose this lens over the 50mm despite many people saying that 50mm are almost mandatory. In any event, I love this lens.
