Ever since purchasing a Nikon Df in chrome about a year ago (and then purchasing another one in black a few months later), I've had my eyes on the Nikkor 14-24. I finally took the plunge this summer and bought this member of Nikon's "holy trinity."All of the reviews and positive pre-purchase information I gathered about this lens is true: it's an extremely well-built and precise lens that focuses quickly and produces tack sharp images. Most important, the 14-24 is fun to use and an exceptional tool that provides photographers with entirely new perspectives and capabilities. For someone who is relatively new to ultra-wide lenses, I am amazed at how the 14-24 is expanding my education and appreciation of photography as art, while giving me the ability to create interesting photos that tell a story. The only negative about the 14-24 is its exposed, bulbous front lens element that can't support a protective filter. But this concern can be resolved with after-market adapters that will allow installation of 145mm protective and correction filters.

My example of this lens provides very good center sharpness but losing sharpness noticably in the corners across a wide range of stops. It is not appreciably sharper than other lenses I've used that cover a similar angle e.g. Sigma 10-20mm on a DX-sensor camera (this lens is being used with a D700), and is noticably less sharp than my older Nikon 28-70/2.8 which is really excellent for sharpness. That said, sharpness is adequate for my purposes though not stellar. With the 14-24, shots are good but definitely the sharpness does not make you stand up and go 'wow'. Overall construction quality and feel seems to be excellent. The lens has significant drawbacks that should be considered: - the large protruding front element precludes the use of screw-on filters for protection - the lens is extremely prone to flare as you would expect of a zoom lens with so many elements - the very wide angle exacerbates the problem since it's so easy to inadvertently or unavoidably include bright light sources in the frame. With the sun in the shot, flare becomes a dominant feature in the shot at typical apertures. - the lens is fairly heavy On the whole, I'm somewhat disappointed with the lens particularly when cost is factored in (my rating does not reflect value for price) though it's "good enough" to hang on to and use because there is no alternative.

Full of high expectations from great reviews I was disappointed.I get better results with my Nikon 18-35.The focal length is so broad with the 14-24, I don't get the fine detail that I get with my 18-35.Of course this Nikon 14-24 is an old tech lens compared to the Nikon 18-35. The 18-35 has the ability to add filters, and seems to me to be Nikons upgrade to the 14-24.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Great special purpose lens

Sharp, fast, also tells other nikon users to look at me!!!! haha. Great lens, especially for compact places where you don't get to maneuver, and for seances. It does get a bit heavy with my D4.

I've been a Nikon owner and admirer for years. This is a terrific lens in all respects. It has no competition.

Ultra Wide Lens for Ultra Wide Object
from San Diego, California
Below is a photo of a 340 foot long "box" truss I recently erected for an airplane hangar in Arizona. With limited foreground in which to work, this ultra wide angle zoom lens allowed me to get close to the structure, capture it all, and with no noticeable distortion. The image was taken at a shutter speed of 1/320th of a second, an aperture of f/9, an ISO of 100, a focal length of 14mm, Auto White Balance, and Matrix exposure metering.

Wow is all I can say
from St. Louis, MO, USA
The only lens lacking after decades of enthusiast photography -- wide angle. Here's one of the many payoffs for being a "Nikon guy". Cannon doesn't have anything close to this solution. We've had it almost a year and thousands of photos demonstrate there is nothing like this high quality wide angle lens for certain situations. Family gatherings, tripod in corner, capturing the whole room, capturing the whole moment, with amazing depth of field (some folks say it's not for this, more for the next comment, but I see high value in the indoor family shots that cannot be achieved any other way). Then there is the get right up in there for the high impact shot. Been working this angle (pun intended) for family shots, awesome pet shots, landscape / flower close-ups, night sky (wow) shots -- all with very high impact. This is not a fisheye lens. Straight lines are straight. It is awesome. Love this lens. And as I'm always quick to point out, glass holds it's value, camera bodies don't. Glass makes all the difference in the world in 30 years from now looking back at the kids. Enough said!
My "Drama" lens
from Los Angeles, CA, USA
I've been using this lens on a working basis for a couple of years, and it's quickly become the favorite lens in my bag. On a full-frame (FX) body, you can't beat the kinds of angles you can get for dramatic effect (see samples). The edge-to-edge sharpness is better than any other lens I use, and that says a lot because it's all Nikkor glass. When zoomed all the way out to 14mm, you're going to get some distortion, but that's to be expected at that angle of view. That's what gives you that dramatic perspective - use it to your advantage. This lens inspires a special kind of shooting. Practice with it to develop a style that normal lenses just don't get.

Really Sharp Lens
from Kanagawa Japan
The first time out of the box I took a few sample shots and was sold. This lens produces extremely sharp images. You have to be aware of your horizon or you will get major distortion, but then again you may want that. It is heavy, lots of glass to produce the sharp image. As for a wide angle lens, this beats them all, get close to your subject and you will get very satisfying results. I have read some reviews about the lack of filter mounting capabilities, the colors are bright and vivid, just know your set up, and avoid having the light source at a 90 degree as it will make you metering difficult if in matrix. This lens is well worth the money if you plan on making large prints.

Used the 14-24 with D800 and built in Flash
While I am very happy with the quality of the pictures with this lens. A few days ago wanted to shoot a frame with this wide lens in a windy area, as I did not want to change lenses in that dusty atmosphere decided to proceed with the 14-24 wide and had to use the built-in flash to fill in a face. It was strange to see the barrel of the lens cast a shadow in the picture,
