I got the matching washer and dryer when my old agitator washer died. I did a lot of research and read many reviews online, because I frequently wash dog bedding and blankets so I need enough water in the washer to soak the dirt out and release the dog hair from the fabric to wash it away. I also need the agitator to create enough friction to help release the dog hair. Many of the reviews of other washer models said they didn't get the clothes wet enough and didn't work well for removing dog hair. Finally, I read a review that said someone found a GE washer with an agitator and it did the job on blankets and dog hair, so I did an internet search and found it had almost all the features I was looking for. After it was delivered, I had a little frustrating time while I figured out how everything worked with the new sensor technology (read the full directions, not just the quick-start version). You can't just select a water level and let it fill with the detergent before you load the clothes, like my old washer. You have to load the clothes, close the lid, and wait for the machine to spin the drum a couple times to sense the weight and height of the load, then you will hear it start to fill. The sensored water level is not enough to soak the clothes or float them so the agitator can work properly. This is the only reason I didn't give the product a fifth star. Thankfully though, there is an extra fill button to push that adds more water to the next sensor level. Also, if you hold the button in longer, it will fill the drum to the highest water level. This was its saving grace for me, because it worked on our thick towels, blankets, and dog bedding. I would recommend this product to anyone who is replacing an agitator washing machine and has dog and cat hair issues.

Once you accept you have a new addition to your family with the frog, you will embrace this machine for still possessing "old school" features. Interior tub is very spacious. Bulky Items setting is the best as it always does Deep Fill and the water level reaches above your clothes. I add detergent after it has filled. I add softener after it has filled and just prior to starting the rinse cycle, but that's just my preference. All of the various "sounds" take some getting used to. I'm glad I got this one versus an expensive front loading one. Spins like a pro. I am not a fan of less water is better, so that's why the Deep Fill is a great option. Wash your clothes at times where the noise won't be bothersome to anyone near it. Enjoy the frog sounds while you wait for your clothes to come out fresh and clean.

Comments about GE 4.2 Cu. Ft. White Top Loading Washer:
After using the machine a week, we are enjoying using it. It took us a while to learn how to use the deep water function as holding the button for 3 seconds did not work for us, but if you wash on "bulky items", it does. If you do have bulky items check on the washer a couple times as mine 'walked" out from the wall about a foot when I washed a comforter! Yes, it is big enough for washing a comforter! The clothes are coming out nice and clean on all functions I have used.... and I have a teenage wrestler, so that says something. I used the extra rinse after accidentally putting in too much cleaner and that worked well. The clothes come out a little more wrinkly, but I am thinking this is the result of having a high RPM spin cycle and I do like how "almost dry" the clothes come out. Most of the wrinkles come out in the dryer anyway. I would recommend the washer... I hope it has a long longevity!

I bought this washer to replace a recalled washer. This Washer had an impeller (no agitator) and you could not adjust the water level to make sure clothes were completely covered. I was never really happy with it. This GE does have an agitator and I can adjust the water level to make sure clothes are completely covered. I think it is doing a much better job at cleaning our laundry. It is a little noisy but the trade off of getting my laundry clean was definitely worth it.

I am very happy to have purchased a GE like my parents. They have always purchased GE products and I am so glad I did.

new type of washer...

This new type of washer does not fill up like washers I have always had. There is a "deep fill" button, but it does not always light up. I read the booklet over and over. Just not a fan of this new type of washer that can wash without a lot of water.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Works as promised

We were looking for a washing machine that would wash king size bedding, use a reasonable amount of water, wash quickly if needed, manage to wash delicates without shredding and still remain reasonably priced. We have had this washing machine for 4 months now, we run 2-3 loads a day and have not had a single problem. They don't make them like they used to (in the old days) with tons of water and three wash settings. Now, with water regulations, and a better understanding of laundry, this washing machine strikes a nice balance of meeting regulations while still deep cleaning the clothes. While researching I read many comments (about other washers) that claimed that the only way to get clothes clean was to have lots and lots of water. Ongoing research, and this washing machine, are proving otherwise. Think about washing dishes in a sink - if you need to wash a dozen plates, you can wash them with a little water and a little soap. More water simply dilutes the soap. Lots of water and lots of soap will get clothes clean but a little soap and a little water (with a clean water rinse) will also get the clothes clean. When the clothes go in, it locks the lid and spins the clothes (without water) a few times to weigh the clothes to determine the size of the load. You can choose from three water settings - 1. the amount of water the machine feels it needs, 2. tap the fill button once and it dumps in another gallon or so or 3. hold the fill button and it will put in as much water as possible (it does not fill to the top but does put in quite a bit of water). Importantly you can add the forgotten item of clothing even after the cycle has started (when in the agitating cycle) - the lid does not lock during agitation (it does lock while spinning). When you add an item, the agitator stops, and you can add the item. When you close the lid, the machine adds a little water and starts up again. It has a variety of settings (delicates, normal, heavy duty) and also allows for a variety of washing cycles. It has different settings for regular clothes, one for jeans, one for towels, one for delicates, etc. This seems to change how aggressively or gently it agitates the clothing. It does not agitate the clothes as roughly as the old machines - it agitates back and forth a few times, lets the clothes rest for a few seconds to let the soap do what it does, then it agitates again, rests, agitates, rest, agitates, etc. It runs a warm rinse that gets all of the soap out and then spins the heck out of the clothes to wring every drop out of the clothing. Drying time is drastically reduced. Fast washing gets clothes washed in about 25 minutes. It does have settings that allows for soaking, second rinses, etc. It has a dial that (apparently) changes the cleaning approach based on whether the stain in tomato, grass or dirt. It has a quiet tune when it starts up and a quiet tune when it finishes. I would strongly recommend this washing machine. A large, stainless steel drum can easily takes the mattress pad, fitted sheet and top sheet from a king size bed. It does not move during the spin cycle (just make sure that clothes are fairly evenly distributed). It may twist the sheets up a bit but if I were in a drum spinning at 800 rpm I might be a little twisted too.....

PURCHASED A DRYER A MONTH AGO AND MY WASHER WENT, THIS IS THE MATCH TO MY DRYER.
Great Washer for the Price!!!
from Canton, GA, United States
I bought this washer a little less than a month ago. My reason for buying a washer with an agitator is....I like for my clothes to be clean! Some of my friends with washers without agitators have to go to extra lengths to get their clothes really clean. NOT WITH THIS MACHINE! This machine really cleans my clothes. I do wish that the normal water level would start out a little higher, but the "Deep Fill" button takes care of that. I am very pleased with the machine! I believe it to be a great value at the purchase price I paid for the machine. I am glad I bought it!

Worst Machine ever
from McBride, BC, Canada
I have had this washer one yr. now and it has been the most disappointing machine I have ever owned. If I could get my money back I would absolutely return this unit. Length of time to wash is too long, Lid lock is not a benefit when you have an unbalanced load It is not user friendly, now I'm stuck with it :(
