I have 4 roku 3s in the house and decided to upgrade my theater to the Roku 4. I love the roku platform and it has all of the best apps. It is the only player out there with Crunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and PLEX. It has a couple other good anime apps I use as well. So what is new on the 4 good and bad? Good: 1. Faster (of course), but you may not notice it when loading your apps since they are more dependent on internet speed than device. I can tell the difference, but only in certain apps. 2. Supports 4K 3. The rest is basically the same as the 3 not that it is a bad thing. The 3 is still awesome. 4. Hard wire network 1 Gb U-Verse. Roku 4 seems to get better speed performance out of it than the 3 did. Buffering is faster for sure, but that depends on the app too. Bad: 1. HDMI handshake issues when first starting a display. It happens every time I start my display. It will flash for about 30 seconds before it stops. Turn on display, see the Roku home screen, full screen black flashes, some short some long, and finally after doing this for 30 seconds it will quit and work perfectly the rest of the time. I have tried multiple high-end cables (Tributaries, Ethereal (Velox)) and some lower end cables from Honeywell. All of these are top certified brands and work perfectly on my other devices including the Roku 3, Oppo BDP-105, PS4, HTPC, XBOX One, U-Verse, etc... Note: I have a receiver and display. Not sure if its handshake with the projector or the receiver. Haven't tried going directly to projector to see. Receiver just passes through on 4K though so it should not be an issue. Note 2: I am running the Roku 4 in 1080p mode right now since my projector is 1080p (Sony 40ES) 2. Crashes - I had Hulu crash on me twice in 2 hours. Then I opened up a show in Funimation and it was about 17 minutes into a 22 minute show and the Roku froze for about 30 seconds then rebooted itself. This would happen from time to time on my Roku 3 as well, but I never had this issue 3 times in one night. I hope this is not the normal. If it doesn't improve I will have to return the 4. All streaming players crash. Mostly because of the apps themselves not the player. However, I use the same apps on the Roku 3 and they never crashed more than one time a night. Fingers crossed it is just a fluke. I am a hardcore user and Roku is my go to device. I am hoping these issues are software glitches related to the newer hardware. I am going to work on some troubleshooting of my own to see if I can at least fix the handshake issue. Right now I would say this. If you do not have a 4k display buy the Roku 3 since it is the best player on the market. If you do have a 4k display the Roku 4 is still a recommended, but do note there are a few quirks that still need to be ironed out.

I'm a big fan of Roku. I have 4 of them - 1 of them now being the Roku 4. Did I say BIG fan? Because the Roku 4 has a BIG fan that seems to never shut off & is VERY LOUD. Because the Roku 4 seems to run hot. It's also BIG. The Roku 4 is BIG. Quite a slab of hot plastic. The only reason to get one is for your 4K UHD TV, right? But for whatever reason, contrary to Roku's hype, the Roku 4 is very slow in its search routines - especially when I'm jumping around on YouTube, rdio, etc trying to stream that favorite music video. I can't figure that one out. Ya buy it for your top of the line 4K UHD TV, and it bogs down searching It's not just that it's slow. It bogs down and locks up while searching. Plus there are slight digital skips in movies that I never had before. Throughout. And I just switched from a Roku 3. NEVER had the issue before. At this stage, I don't know whether to await a software update, or send it back while Roku figures out the next 4K model. A software update will not fix the fan nor the GINORMOUS SIZE. I trust Roku and previously used a Roku 3 on the same TV. Just fine! But the Roku 4 is an absolute D-O-G.

Perfect streaming media player!
from Springfield, MO, United States
Bought a couple months ago as my first streaming media player, so nothing to compare to but I love it regardless. Love the Netflix and Amazon buttons on the remote. Impressed with 4k movies and no issue with buffering at all. Definitely would buy again.

You have to either re-pair the remote or restart the Roku daily, sometimes twice a day. If you want a Roku, buy the 3, not the 4.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Don't get the 4!!!
from Rogers, AR, United States
I started with the Roku 1 and loved it of course. Upgraded to the Roku 4 a few weeks ago and had to unplug and replug it in every time. I called customer service and she acted like she fixed the problem. It still would not turn on without having to unplug and replug it in. (Which gets old fast)
I'm really loving this
My neighbor got me in to this, and I'm loving it. I got the Roku4. I love the fact it has a lot of free channels, and the choice to select pay stations at a little cost. I can watch it on my Main TV, my tablet, and my Samsung S6 cell phone. Thanks Roku

4k picture, 5.1 sound.
from Atlanta, GA, United States
I have had my Roku 4 several months and added 3 Roku Sticks. The 4 is connected to a 4k tv with a surround sound AV system. The picture is 4k when available and the 1080p picture beats my previous cable 1080i hands down. Whenever 5.1 sound is available I get that too. 4 stars because of the audio. Amazon and Netflix apps are 2.1 sound only BUT on the same native apps on my TV they are 5.1. HBO and Vudu are both 5.1 via Roku.
