As of Mid February, the dock is virtually perfect. I'm using a Visio 1080p external monitor and a dell keyboard and mouse. So at this point, it gets five stars, but before the Windows 10 and Surface Firmware updates in mid February, it was a bit of a nightmare. Premium devices need to be much better out of the box from day 1, and I hope MS is learning how to do that. While the Surface Pro 3 dock was a really nicely designed solution, this one is more flexible. Now that it's working right, I do agree with the change in form factor. I like that I can adjust the angle and even lay my Surface Pro 4 flat for writing without undocking it.

Using this dock with my SP3. The form factor is great (it's bulky especially with the power supply, but tucked on the back of my desk, this is fine) - plenty of USB ports, mDPs, and I get to tilt my surface to my heart's content. Those are all pros. The issues: The connection to the SP3 is very tenuous, doesn't take much to disconnect it and often have to fiddle a bit to have it connect properly in the first place. When connected to the Dock, my surface wakes up from hibernate (can't use sleep because it's still broken for me in W10) all the freaking time. So I have to unplug it when I've enabled hibernate. External displays behave completely differently connected to the dock versus connected directly to the surface. Not all cables work anymore, there are particularly issues with DP (I'm using a mDP to HDMI and that works okay), but the monitor will not go into sleep while plugged into the dock with the SP3 off. This is crazy making. So I'm plugged directly into the surface (starting to defeat the purpose of the dock & this wouldn't be an option with two external displays). When using the dock for the external display, my windows do not recover properly - when waking, first the Surface screen kicks in and then the external display, so windows get resized and some crash. It's no good. (this is the real reason I connect directly into the surface). Why I've kept the dock: I get to keep my SP3 power supply in my bag, and the dock has lots of USB ports that are handy. If additional SP3 power supplies weren't so expensive, I'd probably just get a spare and use that. Really, really hoping for some firmware issues that fix these problems. Because using the dock as intended is maddening.

No HDMI?

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Why doesn't it have HDMI. Almost all monitors have HDMI now. At this price I should not need an adapter to connect a monitor.

Another Under-specced Ecosystem Failure

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Underpowered for use with Surface Book with Performance base. Cannot drive two 4K monitors at 60hz. Lacks USB C. A failure in concept and execution. Surfaces are nice machines, but the hardware support for them is awful. Will not buy into this system again.

Not working

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Took forever to figure out how to connect to 2 1080p monitors. I used a mini displayport to full displayport cord to connect both monitors to dock. Had to change settings to 59htz on both monitor to get them to work. Few months monitors will not even register now. I am so sick of these problems. Why can't a billion dollar company just make something that works.

OK but somewhat limited

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. After purchase I found out you needed a miniport VGA adapter to hook up a monitor. Seems like the monitor hook up should be provided. Other than that it works well but only has two USB ports.

Far Too Many Issues and Unresolved Problems

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

3 days since I bought this and many 10s of hours spent trying to get it to work. The first issue is that the dock firmware needs to be updated out of the box. This involves downloading a firmware update app from Microsoft and then running a firmware update procedure. It's fairly straight forward to follow but it failed twice without any error message and so it took me a couple of hours of messing about to update it. The second issue was that connecting the dock kills the wifi. Microsoft have a trouble shooting list for this problem with various updates and diagnostic apps which can be downloaded from their support site. However non of these overcome the issue that the USB 3.0 Dock interferes with 2.4Ghz wifi. The two actual solutions to this issue is to use the docks wired Ethernet or to update your router to a dual band router and force the Surface to use 5Ghz. This overcomes the interference issue. I went for the wired solution which involved moving all my stuff to another room and now I find that the dock drops the Ethernet connection every time the Surface goes to sleep and intermittently looses connection during normal use. Apparently this can be fixed by changing the USB power management settings in the device manager. I had to find all this out for myself by reading several non-Microsoft forums. I have spent about 20 hours trying to solve these issues so far and have had a totally unsatisfactory experience with this product especially considering it's overinflated cost. I would NOT recommend this product unless you are willing and able to bug fix it yourself.

Temporarily loses signal to monitors

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I bought this in December of 2016 so it isn't like this is one of the old surface docks that were known to have poor quality. This was supposed to be a newly "fixed" and "improved" one. Unfortunately, it seems like you can't go more than an hour using this before it will all of a sudden forget to recognize one or both monitors it is connected to thus making them turn off thinking they have no signal. After 15 seconds it will then recorrect itself while rearranging each window that you had open on your desktop. A good way of knowing that this product struggles is when you initially plug it into your surface book and the screen flashes on and off for about 10 seconds while it tries to figure out what is going on... Disappointing and honestly unacceptable.

LOVE Surface Pro and Surface Dock

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I got a Surface Pro and loved its usability except for the lack of USB ports (only one) and no separate audio output port or VGA out. I saw the Surface Dock and got it to connect multiple external disks and for the aforementioned video and audio ports. Like the Surface Pro, its an elegant and extremely usable design. I simply connected the dock to the Surface Pro and everything worked. No problems. This is the best computing solution that I've ever owned, and I've had many many many.
