As of Mid February, the dock is virtually perfect. I'm using a Visio 1080p external monitor and a dell keyboard and mouse. So at this point, it gets five stars, but before the Windows 10 and Surface Firmware updates in mid February, it was a bit of a nightmare. Premium devices need to be much better out of the box from day 1, and I hope MS is learning how to do that. While the Surface Pro 3 dock was a really nicely designed solution, this one is more flexible. Now that it's working right, I do agree with the change in form factor. I like that I can adjust the angle and even lay my Surface Pro 4 flat for writing without undocking it.

Using this dock with my SP3. The form factor is great (it's bulky especially with the power supply, but tucked on the back of my desk, this is fine) - plenty of USB ports, mDPs, and I get to tilt my surface to my heart's content. Those are all pros. The issues: The connection to the SP3 is very tenuous, doesn't take much to disconnect it and often have to fiddle a bit to have it connect properly in the first place. When connected to the Dock, my surface wakes up from hibernate (can't use sleep because it's still broken for me in W10) all the freaking time. So I have to unplug it when I've enabled hibernate. External displays behave completely differently connected to the dock versus connected directly to the surface. Not all cables work anymore, there are particularly issues with DP (I'm using a mDP to HDMI and that works okay), but the monitor will not go into sleep while plugged into the dock with the SP3 off. This is crazy making. So I'm plugged directly into the surface (starting to defeat the purpose of the dock & this wouldn't be an option with two external displays). When using the dock for the external display, my windows do not recover properly - when waking, first the Surface screen kicks in and then the external display, so windows get resized and some crash. It's no good. (this is the real reason I connect directly into the surface). Why I've kept the dock: I get to keep my SP3 power supply in my bag, and the dock has lots of USB ports that are handy. If additional SP3 power supplies weren't so expensive, I'd probably just get a spare and use that. Really, really hoping for some firmware issues that fix these problems. Because using the dock as intended is maddening.

Cable too short

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I love the dock but the cable is way too short for where I want to put it on my desk. I need at least 3 feet. Do you plan on selling an extension cable to extend the length of the dock cable? This is really impeding its usage by me.Pls let me know.

Just plain bad

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

For something that should feel so wireless, there seem to be a lot of cords all over my desk. This is poorly designed. Maybe the Surface Pro 5 will have the features this iteration is totally lacking. Microsoft, please stop pretending you are Apple. You could be way better.

This is why you should not buy any Surface

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

First of all the most obvious problem: Many monitors connected by display port o the Surface Dock without an adapter do not go to sleep properly, even if the Surface is completely shut down. You can read many reports about this issue. Second: The USB ports on the surface dock are not standard compliant. They deliver not enough power. The result is, that for example f you connect a SmartPhone like the iPhone to the dock, it keeps connecting and disconnecting all the time. The same is true for external hard disk drives, even if they have their own power supply. You may connect mice and keyboards to the surface dock, but even simple USB sticks often fail to be recognized properly. Third: Very often, you have to unplug and plug USB device, after you connect the dock to the Surface to have the device recognized. Sometimes you need to disconnect the power of the dock to have it working again. Fourth: Often external monitors fail to reactivate after Standby of Surface. You have to disconnect the Dock and reconnect or even cycle power of the dock. Sometimes you even have to reboot the Surface.

No HDMI?

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Why doesn't it have HDMI. Almost all monitors have HDMI now. At this price I should not need an adapter to connect a monitor.

Another Under-specced Ecosystem Failure

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Underpowered for use with Surface Book with Performance base. Cannot drive two 4K monitors at 60hz. Lacks USB C. A failure in concept and execution. Surfaces are nice machines, but the hardware support for them is awful. Will not buy into this system again.

Not working

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Took forever to figure out how to connect to 2 1080p monitors. I used a mini displayport to full displayport cord to connect both monitors to dock. Had to change settings to 59htz on both monitor to get them to work. Few months monitors will not even register now. I am so sick of these problems. Why can't a billion dollar company just make something that works.

Works like a charm while helping to cut down on the number of cables going into and out of the Dock.

OK but somewhat limited

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. After purchase I found out you needed a miniport VGA adapter to hook up a monitor. Seems like the monitor hook up should be provided. Other than that it works well but only has two USB ports.
