As of Mid February, the dock is virtually perfect. I'm using a Visio 1080p external monitor and a dell keyboard and mouse. So at this point, it gets five stars, but before the Windows 10 and Surface Firmware updates in mid February, it was a bit of a nightmare. Premium devices need to be much better out of the box from day 1, and I hope MS is learning how to do that. While the Surface Pro 3 dock was a really nicely designed solution, this one is more flexible. Now that it's working right, I do agree with the change in form factor. I like that I can adjust the angle and even lay my Surface Pro 4 flat for writing without undocking it.

Using this dock with my SP3. The form factor is great (it's bulky especially with the power supply, but tucked on the back of my desk, this is fine) - plenty of USB ports, mDPs, and I get to tilt my surface to my heart's content. Those are all pros. The issues: The connection to the SP3 is very tenuous, doesn't take much to disconnect it and often have to fiddle a bit to have it connect properly in the first place. When connected to the Dock, my surface wakes up from hibernate (can't use sleep because it's still broken for me in W10) all the freaking time. So I have to unplug it when I've enabled hibernate. External displays behave completely differently connected to the dock versus connected directly to the surface. Not all cables work anymore, there are particularly issues with DP (I'm using a mDP to HDMI and that works okay), but the monitor will not go into sleep while plugged into the dock with the SP3 off. This is crazy making. So I'm plugged directly into the surface (starting to defeat the purpose of the dock & this wouldn't be an option with two external displays). When using the dock for the external display, my windows do not recover properly - when waking, first the Surface screen kicks in and then the external display, so windows get resized and some crash. It's no good. (this is the real reason I connect directly into the surface). Why I've kept the dock: I get to keep my SP3 power supply in my bag, and the dock has lots of USB ports that are handy. If additional SP3 power supplies weren't so expensive, I'd probably just get a spare and use that. Really, really hoping for some firmware issues that fix these problems. Because using the dock as intended is maddening.

Great device but needs a couple changes

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Like this Dock very well. Very powerful addition to the Surface Pro 4 and very well built. Would like to see the following changes to improve the Dock: --add 2ea USB C Ports with support for USB 3.1 Standard --Integrate the power supply into the Dock so I only have 1 device to carry around. It is big/heavy enough already so a little bigger/heavier will not matter much.

Microsoft Surface Dock - Why

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I purchased the Microsoft Surface Dock at the same time I purchased my Microsoft Surface Book and ARC Touch Mouse - I took everything home set it up with two display monitors everything worked fantastic I could not be happier. Then a month ago the issues started happening. I would connect my Docking Station to the Surface Book and the mouse cursor keeps going to the upper left corner or lower left corner and will not allow me to do anything unless I unplug the Docking Station and only use the Surface Book. I read up on issues and resolutions updated my Docking Station and still nothing. Why does everything work great for 7 months then it all goes down hill. It just makes no sense - I am not a tech person but it shouldn't be this difficult especially for what I spent on this setup.

Has Issues with External HDDs

By

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

It seems to work fine with low bandwidth USB connections, like MIDI or a mouse. But two USB 3.0 HDDs that I use for storing samples and games will not work via the dock. I've updated the Firmware and tried different combinations, but while the disks can be seen and I can navigate folders, when you get to a directory with files it hangs and says "working on it".

Perfect dock

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I've used the dock for about 4 months now with a surface book, and wish I had it from the start. I have an external monitor, several USB devices, and headphones plugged in. The surface book has enough ports for me, but since I work at home and the office, its nice to leave my charger at home and not have to plug/unplug everything each time I want to take my surface book anywhere. The magnetic breaksafe connector is easy and fast to connect and disconnect. I know several reviewers have had problems, but so far everything (power, USB devices, monitors, audio) has worked perfectly for me, and I connect/disconnect a couple times most business days.

horrible

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

Works very poorly, even with allegedly supported monitors. Screen blinks every time you switch between monitors even after installing all updates to windows + surface dock software. Note: you are limited to only 2 external monitors

Needs software polishing to be outstanding.

Comments about Microsoft Black Surface Dock:

I have two of these, one at work and one at home - with a Surface Pro 4 (sp4). At work it is attached to a network and serves as a USB/charger point - to get on the domain the base station's MAC had to be added but that was not an issue. The OS in it is Windows 10 build 1607 with the 12/8/16 patches. All firmware has been updated as of 12/10/16. Work has not used an extra monitor (yet) so the issues at home don't (yet) apply to work. Everything but the video out stuff is just fine. The issue is when using video out. Two 27" 1920x1080 LED (AOC) monitors are on the unit. One is landscape and is inverted portrait for reading and writing documents. The good: Windows 10 "span" works across this "T" shaped desktop. The images don't flicker. Colors are good and the i7 with the top of the current line graphics is quite good enough (openGL in X11 is nicely done). The attachment to the sp4 is super elegant...just a magnetic slot for power and all data. Really quite nice in that it won't wear. The quality of the dock is tops - it feels solid and the materials are quite good. The designers of the hardware did a great job. I even like the cord(s)...nice feel. It feels expensive (it is expensive). The bad: I've had one time flickers and phone beep loops. Those only happened once so they are likely OS issues. The really annoying thing is screen position/layout.The dock with all updates of the OS and firmware to date always(!) fails to "remember" what the local monitor set up is between dock-ings. Right now, every time I re-connect I have to re-align/position the customization to where the monitors are in space. This is clearly a windows 10 bug (or feature...) but they really should have tested this out. It would not shock me if every beta tester looked at monitors in a standard format. This is my first time doing the portrait approach and had I placed the two monitors in a normal fashion side by side it would probably be fine. Every time it fails to remember that one of the monitors is portrait-inverted ....it is super annoying. To MS's defense, this is probably a software fix for them. People want to set things up and forget it....I should be able to plug into the docking unit one week from disconnecting and get things to be exactly correct the first time..and every time. Finally, along these lines, the resolution of the monitors attached to the doc is X and is likely not as good as the crazy sharp sp4 screen. Yesterday the scroll bars were about 8-10 mm thick...normal is 4 mm. I have scaling set to 225% on the sp4 so I can read things....some apps can handle this and some cannot. It is a huge issue and something I really hate about the sp4. It is so bad that I might just ditch the whole system... The system needs to be adapted to each situation to optimize things - right now it feels very amateurish in terms of the GUI.. The video side of things is not allowing the system to shine. The GUI needs to be kept pure and consistent. So MS: please get some patches out asap to make this system what is really could be - superb. It is not that now. These fixes are needed to go from 3 starts to 5 stars in my book. It is almost there. If they got the monitor stuff all fixed I'd be able to recommend this to a friend. I suspect this "will" get fixed, so my "no" is sort of short term only (hopefully).
