Comments about KitchenAid 5-Qt. Tilt-Head Burnished Flat Beater:
I bought my mixer three weeks ago and I love this burnished finish because it seems as though dough sticks less to it. However after the first use and wash the finish comes off of it. It leaves a blackish grey residue now and it just doesn't seem very safe at all. I'm extremely heartbroken over it.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

One use and already ruined
from Waco, TX
My husband surprised me with a Kitchenaid stand mixer after several years of hints. I love it except this flat beater. After using it to make cookie dough and washing it, all of the coating came off. Now I have a mixer that I am afraid to use because I'm worried more of the coating will come off in my batter and dough as well as on my hands, washcloth and hand towel. Kitchenaid - PLEASE redesign this beater.

As an avid baker I'd been wanting a kitchenaid mixer for years, finally got one. After one use and wash after making cookies with the flat beater, all the finish came completely off and rendered this attachment completely useless (unless I want my cookies to look like they belong in a black and white movie). Can't even pick up the flat beater without my hands getting covered in dark grey powder
after dishwashing, it has black gunk and stain in the dough
from Jacksonville, Al
I did not know why my dough becomes grey and noticed that the color came from this beater. Because coated one chipped like egg shells and remained in the dough, I bought this beater and now it changes the color of the dough into grey. Even whenever I touches this beater, black stains come out of it.
Do not put in top of dishwasher-silver comes off
By Pen Pen

I put this on the top rack of my dishwasher. all the silver came off and then when I picked it up grey rubbed all over my skin. Its ruined. I cant believe this is not dishwasher safe. I can not use it now because I dont want the grey stuff going into my food.
I decided to buy another Kitchen Aid mixer because my last one lasted over 30yrs with frequent use. The new bowl-lift model is fine but the burnished beater is awful! It leaves dark grey residue on my hands and in white frosting. I'd rather pay more for a NSF certified beater.
beater oxidizes after washing
By food for four
from Elyria, Ohio
after a few washings with detergent, the metal oxidizes and the part is unuseable. It took an hour to clean it, and it will continue to oxidize unless you coat it with oil.

I find that the only way to get most of the black oxidation off the dough hook and the beater is to scrub them with baking soda. It takes elbow grease, believe me, but at least when I used the beater on my mashed potatoes they didn't have black steaks through them. For the price of these mixers, Kitchen Aid should get some quality accessories.

Oxidation caused by dishwasher
By Cooking Gma
I just got off the phone with the service center and was informed that the dark grey, oxidation on the beater and dough hook was caused by dishwasher use, that these items are NOT dishwasher safe. That replacement is the only solution.
