Their Story

These engineers of all things supersonic started from humble roots: a single student disappointed by an underwhelming speaker purchase. Amar Bose was studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he set out to create a new design. Back in 1964, the student's thesis advisor professor Y.W. Lee helped to fund his dream products: sound generators that aimed not just at listeners, but at walls and corners as well. As waves hit different corners, listeners would be enveloped by melodies, acoustics, basslines and other effects for a completely immersive experience—in theory. The dream soon came to fruition with the Bose 901, with many drivers pointed towards the wall behind the product. It was a smash hit back when it launched in 1968, and remained on the market in some form until it was retired not too long ago in 2016. In 2011, Amar Bose donated many of the company's shares to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, though the school is not involved in the control of the company.

While the company's original mission may have been to create immersive surround sound, Bose has since expanded their offerings (though their bookshelf speakers and subwoofers can still pack in all the punch you'd find in some home cinemas). These experts in all things audio have focused their efforts on soundbars, portable speakers and headphones, as well as their unparalleled sunglasses. Those uncomfortable with wearing large earbuds can now take their music on the go too thanks to models like the Tempo, Soprano, Tenor and Alto sunglasses.
