This really is a great unit. But to the people that complain about smoke..[...] It doesn't come with a charcoal filter... THUS it won't remove odors. If you are trying to fix odors... Get a charcoal filter. [...] this is a GREAT item... I am buying another one for my kids' room. GE makes great products.

I have had a number of various air cleaners in my life. This was, by far, the worst.
Recently I bought this shortly after a cold when all the dust and pet dander in my house left me wishing I hadn't sold my old, noisy cleaner. I set it up in a 12x10 (much smaller than 330 ft²) room I intended to use as a "breathing" retreat. It eventually reduced the large (visible) dust particles quite a bit, as tested using a spotlight in the dark. With the rated flow, however, it should have made substantial progress in minutes instead of hours.
Suspicious of its real ability, I did a test by having a friend sit in a small bathroom and smoke a cigarette. Putting the filter on high as he exited, the air was still visibly smoky--and stinky--after 15, 30, and 60 minutes. Turning on the bathroom vent fan, which has a MUCH smaller flow rate, the remaining thick cloud was cleared in minutes. Lots of air is blowing through the device; it just isn't clean. If I hadn't installed the HEPA filter myself, I would have suspected that it had been left out.
I couldn't return it because I lost the receipt, but on a bright note, it has worked out well as a moderately quiet fan.

I purchased this to clear my room of a slight smell of smoke ie. like remnants of a fireplace smoke. I turned it on, closed the windows and the room smelled worse than before. The smell of plastic generated by this machine is enormous and almost made me collapse. Not only did it generate a strong plastic odor, it did not do any thing to lessen the faint smell of smoke. I had to open my windows and turn the thing off to clear out the room. I'll take the soft smell of fireplace smoke any day over the horrible plastic odor this thing generated.
