The Perks of In-Ceiling Speakers
By installing speakers in your ceiling, you can enjoy a complete home theater experience without worrying about finding a steady surface to place every speaker. The concealed speakers provide your space with a cleaner, finished look that can be hard to achieve with wires running to an array of audio devices around the room. In-ceiling speakers can even add a whole new dimension to your surround sound system thanks to the magic of object-based surround formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
These formats add a vertical element to your sound system. Traditional surround sound plays audio in front, behind, and to the sides of the listening area. Object-based surround formats also play music above and below you, allowing you to hear the trickle of a stream underfoot or the rush of an aircraft above. Just make sure you have a DTS:X and/or Atmos-enabled receiver to process the sound. So long as your receiver is up for the job, any overhead speakers can function as Atmos ceiling speakers. While object-based surround sound provides an incredibly immersive listening experience, surround sound ceiling speakers might be more than enough for your needs. They offer the same sound experience as typical surround speakers with the added benefit of being flush-mounted out of sight. Consider pairing them with a set of in-wall speakers and your speaker setup will be practically invisible.
But you don't need a home theater for ceiling speakers. You can add a pair of home ceiling speakers in any room of the house, allowing you to sing along in the kitchen, drift to sleep to calming sounds in the bedroom, or keep the kids entertained in the playroom without giving them the chance to knock the speaker off its perch. As an added bonus, in-ceiling speakers are often less expensive than comparable bookshelf speakers. However, the process of installing in-ceiling speakers isn't easy. So unless you're particularly handy, working with professionals is a must when it comes to your home theater system.
