Washer Dryer Combo Unit: A Small Space Problem Solver

Homes with small spaces deserve just as much cleaning power as larger-scale mansions with dedicated laundry rooms. And while there might not always be room for a separate dryer in a closet-sized area, you might just have enough space for a single machine. Opt for a multifunctional washer dryer in one unit that can accomplish everything your household needs (and nothing it doesn't). These are made with smaller households in mind: think young families, couples and single residents. If you've got a full-fledged home with multiple children heading back and forth to school and sports practice, you're going to need a more powerful machine, like a top-load or front-load washer (we've got tips on how to clean those front-load washers, too). Let's dive into why a washer dryer combo unit might be the perfect device for your home, or if you might need to go up a size.

The Pros: Space Saving, Multifunctional and (Somewhat) Economical

These ultra-compact appliances are made with problem-solving power in mind. If you don't have enough space for a laundry tower or two machines beside each other, this is the perfect solution. Slide yours beneath a kitchen countertop and hide behind a cabinet door, or place yours in a utility closet or bathroom. Make sure you carefully measure out your dimensions with our measuring guide to ensure that your device will fit ahead of time, too. Nobody wants to pick out their perfect small space appliance only to find that it's a quarter-inch too large on one side. For inspiration on where to place yours, check out our guide to the best spots to hide your washer and dryer.

Other boosted benefits of a washer dryer combo unit include a single cycle. There's no need to switch from laundry mode to dry mode or move clothing from one machine to the other. Just add clothes, detergent, softener and other add ons, and you'll return to a load of completely clean fabrics later in the day. That makes these machines perfect for those who work all day or find themselves out of the house for long periods of time (or anyone who hates moving clothes from the washer to the dryer). The main catch? Load size is small.

The Cons: Capacity and Dry Time

An all-in-one device almost sounds too good to be true, right? It's not, though these washer dryer combo units can't handle loads as heavy as a standalone unit. That's all due to drying capabilities. The machine is optimized to wash full-sized loads, but can only dry half-sized loads. That means you get less laundry done per load, and have to run more loads to get each hamper of sheets, socks and pillowcases freshened. When it comes to drying, buyers can choose between heat pump models and condenser versions. Keep in mind that heat pump versions are often more expensive, but use significantly less energy and water than a condenser version. Either way, you're generally facing a long drying time as well. If you have lots of laundry to get through in less time, a stackable unit may be a better option that still saves space.
