This receiver replaced my Denon 3802 (moved to my downstairs music/video room). I am a fan of Denon in my systems with high efficiency speakers and needed this newer unit to decode the HD soundtracks and for the hdmi video switching. The unit did not disappoint and has been a very welcome addition.
A brief on the Audessy set up - after years of a sound meter and trusting my personal attention to detail I am surprisingly pleased with the auto set up. Granted - the first three times I ran the set up I had far more tweaking than I thought necessary - however, those who tell you to be sure the room is quiet when you take your six measurements are right on. When you pay particular attention to this the auto set up is pretty darn good. I only had to make small crossover changes to the sub when completed (these were to the crossover for my back speakers which Audessy suggested 200hz - when I moved it to 80 hz all was good).
Denon is spot on again with a quality amp and well featured receiver

Unless you intend on spending an afternoon learning how to operate it, I'd settle for a Bose 321 home theater system which includes 2 spkrs & a sub-woofer as well as am/fm & dvd/cd player for at nearly the same price. It's much easier to set up & operate. But it is an outstanding unit for complex home theater use and much more punch than the Bose 321. Never been dissapointed w/ Dennon Quality. Just overly technical and not user friendly.

Quality avr -- tons of expandibility, video upscaling is solid, power output is strong. Audyssey auto speaker setup is great
Manual is horribly lacking, otherwise I would have rated 5 starts -- google "batpig" for a great denon setup website or go to avs forums for dedicated discussion thread.
