i had a sony str-915 w/ 100watts, and with that old system, getting anywhere near 1/2 volume would be LOUD. With this one, i need to have it at about 65 (its volume goes from 1 to 99) to get the loudness i crave in my action movies. above 70, and you get some audible static out of the speakers. Aside from that though, this is one sweet receiver. VERY crisp and clean sound, it has a richness i didn't experience w/ my old sony. I haven't yet taken advantage of all the features, but can't wait to! One thing i'll add- when doing the auto setup w/ the microphone, make sure there is absolutely ZERO ambient noise. I had to run the auto set up 6 times before it finally worked. It was also a little finicky getting my sub to kick in (i have it running through the 2 front speaker lines since i have small satellites and want the bass when listening to stereo broadcasts).

I just upgraded from a similarly priced Sony receiver for the purpose of managing my new HDMI devices. The speaker setup is outstanding, device switching is logical, controls are simple and effective, and the clarity and power is suppurb. I won't be worrying with another Sony. I'm using fairly large speakers (full 7.1) and they still barely make this reciever sweat. It also has an excellent remote that manages all my components. The available ipod dock is worth the price as well.

Sleek, simple, high quality receiver with plenty of inputs and great sound. HDMI ins and out are a plus. As is the auto set-up feature. All around a great product.
