I bought this system because of its value. I have owned Onkyo receivers in the past and they were great. This one does exactly what I need it to, it enhances the large screen tv I just bought at a very affordable price. Because it is passthrough, I connected HDMI cables from my components directly to the TV and connected the components to the receiver with optical connections. I would also upgrade the speaker wires, they're kinda small.

The system is great for movies in smaller rooms and living rooms. It is not a 7.1 so it is not ideal for larger rooms and the wattage is not as high as it could be but all around it is a great system. Also the subwoofer does not have a built in amplifier so that is another area that they could improve but for the money and value this thing is awesome.

I have an extensive (and expensive), 7.1 THX sound system in my home theater. This small unit is tinny by comparison. However, compared to anything else in this price range, this is absolutely the best value. Good, clear, reasonably loud sound makes movies, sit-coms, and sports all more enjoyable.

Great price for a quality surround sound system. The set up and menus were intuitive. I didn't even read beyond the quick set up guide. The cables were a pain though- it took two days and four tries to get the speakers to fully connect. The sound is clear and I looi forward to many years of movie enjoyment with this system.

Great product for the price. A step above the other home-theater-in-a-box systems because of versatility allowed by the receiver. Sound quality is great, my only complaint is that the bass is tuned a little too high out of the box for the analog inputs, but that's easy to fix. Oh, and the speaker wire for the surround speakers is not quite long enough, but again easy fix.
There are a wide array of inputs available (plenty of composite, 2 component, 3 HDMI, 2 optical digital audio, 1 coax digital audio) to suit most needs. Unfortunately, there is no upconversion (each video connection - composite, component, HDMI - must be connected to the display individually), so if you are looking to consolidate your A/V connections this is not the right product. This would not be a big problem, except that the remote is poorly designed, and there are no instructions for programming the remote to run components from other manufacturers - just Onkyo. Would be great to switch the input on my display with the same remote that I use to switch the selection on the receiver - if anyone has figured this out, please post info!

I did not need a 7.1 speaker system as I have a small apartment. A 5.1 does just fine. This system was easy to set up. The color coded speaker cables are a great help. The only drawback is the lack of an On-Screen Display interface for the TV. No big deal.
For the money this system works great.
Delivery was on time, but as usual, the UPS driver was too lazy to deliver it to my door and left the box at the Apartment Leasing Office.

I was surprised at how well the speakers sounded. Onkyo is known for their receivers, not speakers. I thought I'd give it a chance and I'm very pleased with the results.
I like the HDMI feature the most. The picture on my 100" home theater screen is flawless. I was able to connect a PS3, a laptop, and a cable/sat box without a problem. One thing to note is that the first 3 input selections on the receiver are pre-assigned to the HDMI ports, so don't bother trying to assign them as you would with the digital sound sources.
The only thing I found lacking was that it could have used another digital coax audio input. It only had one so I had to use a splitter for my application. However, it does have two optical audio inputs which might be enough for your application. My problem is two of my sources only had coax audio outputs, not optical.
Overall, the system is very easy to set up. It delivers crisp powerful sound, and the picture from the HDMI Out is perfect. For the price, you can't go wrong with this one.

Simply the best you can get for the cost. Provides a ground surround sound experience. The back speakers can get really loud too if you like that (their adjustable). It normalizes the loud commercials on TV which is great, no more super loud commercials! The unit gets loud enough but some DVDs have a low volume to begin with so you have to turn the unit all the way up to really get a booming sound but this is a rare occurrence. Works great with a fiber cable hooked up to your cable box to get 5.1 surround sound when watching HDTV. I personally have Verizon Fios and it sounds GREAT! The speakers have a very appealing design. My wife prefers the sleek look over the bookcase speakers I had on the mantle previously.
The system also allowed me to use a lot less cables to the TV. Now I only have 1 set of component cables and 1 hdmi cable running to the tv. I currently have hooked up an XBOX, Wii, DVD player, Cable Box.
I didn't mind the HDMI not carrying the audio signal because the unit was such a great price and it really isn't that big of an inconvenience. I am using a fiber optic cable from the cable box and a regular composite cable (red, white, or yellow) to serve as the digital audio signal for the other devices.
The product was packaged better than anything I have ever ordered from the internet. There was some serious amount of bubble wrap around the unit! And they sent the box within a larger box that way my neighbors didn't know what was in the box...deters theft.

100% worth the money. If you are looking for something not expensive but with good quality of surround sound, then go with this. It beats my old Sony system which was $250 with only 250 watts.
