I laid out the system, and went to set it up and it wouldn't program while anything other than TV was selected. When it did get to programming, it would take one change and then freeze up. Had to unplug to reboot just to get the system to turn back on. Wouldn't turn off with anything other than TV selected.
Speakers were not that great.
Bass wasn't crisp and overshadowed everything with it's crackling.
Product was returned within a week for being defective.
My delivery was prompt. Product arrived in good condition. Customer service was good during the purchase as well as with the return. Highly recommend ABT for their friendly and courteous customer service even though the product was defective.

[...]Take your time setting it up. I had a question and called Onkyo and they talked me through what to do. Onkyo service very good. Hint: If it seems like it is taking you too long to understand the manual, systmem or instructions.......call Onkyo customer service for the answer to save time. System is the best sounding system I have ever owned (Sony and others). More features for the money and more features then I need at this time. I am very happy with the system and the price I paid. Good value for the monry.

Comments about Onkyo Onkyo HT 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package:
I love the sound! I bought this system to replace my old Sony Surround System, which was not HDMI-compatible, and I could immediately tell the difference! The sound is so much crisper and realistic. Sometimes I will be sitting on the sofa watching a movie alone and I will hear a sound behind me, and believe that there is actually someone or something behind me to where I have to turn around and look! Very realistic. I actually disconnected my old Sony system and connected the Onkyo by myself, which is a real feat since I am technically challenged! However, the actual on-screen set-up, once it was connected, was not as easy for me as was my old Sony system (i.e., not as user-friendly). It took me a few tries to get the sound the way I wanted it.
I mostly wanted the Onkyo because I enjoy watching movies, and preferably in blu-ray. So I wanted a sound system that would make the movies sound as great as they looked. And the Onkyo HT 5.1 does exactly that! I am sure the longer I own this product the more I will learn about what it is capable of doing. But after owning it for only a couple of weeks, it is already awesome! I definitely recommend this product to anyone looking in this price range for a home theater system. Believe me, I did my homework and researched for quite a while. In the end, the Onkyo was by far the best deal on the market.

This system's sound is very clear and loud. If you are worried about the passive sub woofer, don't be. I had to turn the bass down so I do not disturb my neighbors. I am very impressed with this system. It is well worth the price. I did a lot a research and ABT has the best price.

The system went together beautifully, I did use larger cables due to other reviewers suggestions. Don't worry about it not being loud enough, it can crank and sounds great with iPhone. I think that this system can't be beat, better than other all in one systems

Comments about Onkyo Onkyo HT 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package:
My primary use for this device was with a PC running Windows 7 64-bit and I had some problems which is what my review will focus on. When plugging the receiver in via a stereo wire, the Dolby ProLogic II shined beautifully transforming my 2 channel audio into a brilliant 5.1 soundstage (after minor tweaking of the receiver settings).
However, when I upgraded to HDMI for full native 5.1 sound I had some issues. The biggest issue is that you lose Dolby ProLogic II completely. Under HDMI you can still use the Onkyo presets which are front channel oriented or you can set it to play on all speakers which makes audio sound washed, cutting the volume down significantly.
I'm unhappy with all those options so I concluded the best option is Direct mode which puts the computer in control of each channel. The drawbacks listed below apply only to operating in Direct Mode with a PC:
1. Unless you find a tweak, for which I haven't, 2 channel audio files will only work on the front 2 channels and no subwoofer. (Video files and discs that have native 5.1 audio will perform fine under Direct mode.)
2. For some reason all flash videos seem to be very buggy with Direct mode. The audio constantly cuts in and out. I've tested it out using multiple websites and with multiple browsers all using the latest version of Flash. I am forced to switch the receiver out of Direct Mode to watch.
3. Direct mode cuts power to the speakers after a second or two of silence which results in a loud click sound from the receiver.
4. Since your speakers are always off when not in use, when you start to play any sound in Direct mode the receiver cuts off the first second or two of audio while powering up the speakers and again, it makes another annoying click sound in the process.
So why do I give this setup 4/5 stars? The speakers are powerful and the sound is great when its all working. The subwoofer provides excellent low frequency bass that rocks the house. Especially when playing a few THX Bass Test mp3s. It'd be great if Dolby ProLogic II was available for HDMI connections because then I could listen to my 2 channel mp3s under ProLogic and go back to direct mode when I want to listen to a 5.1 source. A set top box (like a cablebox or bluray/dvd player) wont suffer from any of these problems. Their sound is constant so no clicks, and since they usually don't have Flash support, that wont be a problem.
Bottom Line: Read the entire manual and take the time to setup ProLogic II to your liking (I prefer to make the soundstage wider which can be done if you play around.) It is great for your cablebox and dvd player but PCs are very complex which will leave you frustrated because you can't seem to have your cake and eat it too. BUT YOU WON'T FIND A BETTER SOUNDING HOME THEATER IN A BOX FOR THIS PRICE. It is hands down the best deal you are going to get and so I recommend it to anyone buying on a budget.
As far as ABT.com goes, they are a great site. They offered the best deal on this product and their free shipping was very fast. If you've never purchased from this site, don't worry you are in safe hands.

Comments about Onkyo Onkyo HT 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package:
sounds great with regular tv and especially great with blue ray player.I have used Pandora internet radio and Netflix with this and love it. I had originally thought of the ht s 5300 unit but didn't want to spend that much and am glad I got this one instead. For [$] this is a great unit I can upgrade speakers if they break at some point, I don't think you can do that with the other brands.
