I have this player connected by Bravia Sync to my Sony flat screen. One button turns both on or a push of the play button turns both on. It is great. It does have a little slow loading time but it is well worth it when you see the output. I also have it connected directly via optical cable to my home theatre system which provides flawless surround sound. I am highly pleased with this purchase. It will also play audio CDs which is not quite spelled out in the original specs.

I'm using this Sony Blu-Ray player with a sound system and a new Samsung LCD flat-screen TV. Stunning picture, and the upconversion of regular DVDs is also quite crisp. Set-up was pretty straight-forward. No complaints. Beautiful picture, nice thin aesthetics on the appearance of the player itself.

I am very happy with the picture quality. I use it with the Sony Bravia 46" LCD HD TV. The Bravia TV remote will work with the BD player and the Sony sound system.

Sony blue ray disk player looks smart and plays smart. It had no trouble playing two newly released BDs nor any of my older DVDs. The upscaling of the DVDs is incredible. My older DVD player would only disply on a portion of the Sharp HD TV. The Sony displays correctly and beautifully. It connects to the TV via HDMI and to an older receiver via optical cable. One the receiver was configured, it had no problem decoding the 5.1 soundtrack.

I purchased the BDPS550 over a Pioneer Elite Blueray player just because the Sony is thin enough to fit on my A/V stand. I am very pleased with the picture quality and sound decoding.

Great picture and sound but takes forever to spool up. Remote is overly complicated and the user manual could be simplified...I am a power user and I had to take a fair amount of time to figure out how the remote commands all worked. How about "Menu"? Keep it simple if you want mass adoption.

Sony has once again come up with a stellar product, it's just a shame they did it their usual hard way.
This is such an incredible machine - it actually makes Full Screen DVD's look like Widescreen,
Some of the features are so advanced it is hard to readily absorb them and how to use them.
This is the product that should have been made available in a more timely manner - e.g. why did we have to wait up to 6 months to get the 500 and immediately see the 550 appear - cheaper and much better?

This unit is so small and powerful...Everything ie beyond brilliant. What really is a dream is not just the upconversion of regular DVD's but what is does to Full Frame to Widescreen is unbeliveable unless you see it!

I purchased this to take over Blu-Ray movie duties from my PS3. The PS3 is a great BD player but it does not support Bitstream for TrueHD or Master Audio, it generates heat and it is a bit loud.

I am completely happy with the BDP-S550

The image quality on this unit is second to none. Having never experienced 1080p resolution, this was a mind blower. I would recomend blu ray to anyone that own a HDTV. This player is another in the line of execelent products from sony.

Incredibly fast and easy setup if you already have a theater system configured. Hook up HDMI and Audio out to reciever, plug in, and do the simple on screen setup. It takes no more than 10 minutes to get a fantastic movie theater quality picture and sound. I use 5.1 but this machiine is also 7.1 capable. I have a 1080p Sony big 50" LCD a couple of years old and would recommend using the 550 with a 1080 TV rather than a 720 to get the most out of the picture capability. I compared a Bluray 'Live Free or Die Hard' with a regular DVD of the same movie. The Bluray was better but not by much. You would have to pay attention especially to color intensity to see much difference. I am really pleased I can enjoy my regular DVDs on the 550 with the best picture possible. Good upscaling is definitely a plus.

I'd recently purchased the Oppo 983H because of its high marks in upscaling SD DVDs. Had I known the Sony S550 is on equal footing in this regard, I could have saved money; the Sony is just as good as the Oppo at upscaling SD DVDs, and does a stellar job with Blu-Ray discs. Its audio capabilities are also quite impressive. For the money, the S550 is a clear winner!

Set up was simple even for an electronics novice like myself. Blu-Ray is easy to use, start-up is quick, mated easily to my surround sound system and my TV, picture is beautiful on my 50" Plasma. Upconvert is very apparent when I play regular DVDs. Blu-Ray disks are even better. Best Price for this machine. LOVE THIS MACHINE!
