As an early adopter I purchased the Sony BDP-S1 for [$] last December, thinking Blu-ray will win the format war. With the studios recently changing their priorities it looks line this battle will go on forever.The solution? Buy an HD-DVD player and have both formats. At this price point, it is almost a no-brainer other than you might need more switching inputs than your reveiver offers (but where are the universal players?).As for the Toshiba HD-A2 player, the HD picture is stunning and there are no artifacts noticable with regular programming material. Maybe with test suites but who cares? How can you lose? Since the Sony consumed the 5.1 receiver input, I didn't need the higher end model with that feature. This unit gives you outstanding picture and sound at an affordable price. I paired this with an Onkyo 604 receiver and an Optoma HD70 front projector on a 106" screen. Even though the HD70 is native 720p, I set the HD-A2 for 1080i and I get a great picture run through HDMI connectors. The better the source, the better the picture.
The sound is great also. The TrueHd sound comes through the Onkyo as HDMI PCM.

HD DVD's are amazing, as expected. The surprise was how much better standard DVD's looked compared to a standard DVD player. My old DVD's look almost as good as HD.

this is the best piece of video equipment i've owned in years since the debut of standard dvd.and am a sony guy since the release of hd dvd and blu ray i've been tryin to make up my mind on which one to go with i've seen them both in action and i gotta keep it real every blu ray machine i've seen have been slightly better than a normal dvd. now hd dvd on the otherhand i was like now this what am lookin for the pq is great.i picked up batman begins and i thought i was back in the theaters. hd dvd in my eyes has a better picture and sound than blu ray
