I waited about two years to buy a DVD recorder with a hard drive. I would not buy one without a hard drive because otherwise it would be just like a regular VCR, i.e. you would have to constantly insert & remove discs, and we were always forgetting what we had recorded onto each tape, etc. This machine makes it so easy to record TV shows, which is mainly what we use it for. The on screen TV Guide has worked perfectly with our basic cable service. Just highlight the show you want to record and hit the record button. That's it. I also got this so that I could transfer 8mm and VCR tapes permanently to DVDs. I haven't tried the 8mm yet, but the VCR to DVD worked perfectly. I haven't tried any of the more advanced features yet. I would have given this unit a 5 star rating except for several small things: 1) The remote should have been backlit so you could see it in the dark, 2)The commercial skip feature should probably be in 30 second increments instead of 60 seconds, 3)It would have been really nice to have a flashbach/quickview type button so you could bounce back & forth between two channels, and 4)A little pricey but still worth it. I also got a battery backup [...] for our home theatre gear because our power goes on & off a lot. (should have done this long ago because I no longer have to constantly reset channels and clocks on all the gear---nice!). The picture on our regular crt Tv has been greatly improved. Trouble is I,m not sure if it was due to the clean power or the dvd recorder itself, or the combination of the two. I would highly recommend this product. It is being discontinued and may be hard to find.

I had Panasonic's top of the line DMR-E500HS, with it's crazy 400GB HDD for a while. Worked well except for it's limited media support (DVD-R, DVD-RAM, regular movie DVDs). Bought this DMR-EH55S for its' super multi format drive. Works great with all kind of media. The recording/editing interface is much like the DMR-E500HS which I liked. Picture quality is good. Using one thin HDMI cable vs the thick component cables is a big plus for me. Personally I think the upconverting portion is more of a marketing gimmick, I don't notice much difference if any between this model and my previous. Perhaps my TV was upconverting well enough w/ the previous model. I use this unit mostly for playing DVD movies, and to set to automatically record my weekly shows just incase I get caught up with something and would otherwise miss the shows. Just wish panasonic would make a DVR with digital tuners.
