I had owned a Toshiba RD-XS34 and loved it, but unfortunately, someone broke in my house and stole it. So I wanted to buy a newer HDTV unit since I have DirecTV and now the new 5 LNB dish and the H20 HDTV receiver. The RD-XS54 looked like my choice since it had the HDMI interface for 720p/1080i HDTV use but I was wondering what the basic difference was between the RD-XS54 and RD-XS55. *** (1) Satellite Programming and STB IR allow, via supplied IR blaster, channel control of DBS satellite boxes for manual timer programming. I've done without a DVD-Recorder for several years, only because the industry fails to realize that USA consumers also want video components in black, not just silver. My long wait was over with the Toshiba RD-XS55. I am also happy to say that, after a month of use, I am very satisfied with this unit. It has performed without error and the video quality is excellent.
