I replaced our HR20 with this new HR21-700. It looks and acts just like the old one but this one has DVR capabilites that are really simple to use. DirecTV imposes a "lease" agreement so that if I cancel the service, I'll have to return this unit. Also, DirecTV also adds on a monthly DVR fee ($5.99) in addition to the HD Service I was already paying for ($9.99). This device requires two cables lines from the dish so that one line can be viewed while a second line is being recorded.

Was pleased with the look of the product, ease of installation and was pleasantly suprised on how closely it's software mirrored the TIVO features we already have on our old TIVO R10 units. For the price and features, would definetly recommend it as a replacement for those old worn out TIVO units.

Had a TiVo for about 5 years, but finally upgraded my DirecTV service to HD, so this was really the only alternative for an HD-DVR. Setup was straightforward. So far the unit has worked reliably. The interface is not quite as smooth as TiVo, nor does it have as many capabilities, but it does what I need it to do, i.e. record programs in HD or SD. Only real complaint is lack of support for a wireless USB network adaptor for home WiFi networking.

The LCD TV worked well at the outset, but than two problems developed. The remote quit working and the TV picture broke-up after minimal use. Product was returned for exchange, and the jury is still out on this issue.

Old DIRECTTV guide had two options. One was extremely helpful in finding and recording desireable movies by having a 12hr foreward look for the current channel. The new and improved guide does not support this feature. So much for improving a receiver.

I called Direc** for this very HD receiver,they wanted 199 plus 99 for installation.I paid 187.15 complete.One thing not listed in the "box contents" is there is an HDMI cable included,I bought one but when it arrived,there was one included.

May be more of a Directv problem, but get "searching for satellite signal" that is inconsistent. May not get a channel and then a few minutes later it comes in. Seems to be mostly on the HD channels.

For the past 12 years I have set up my DTV receiver, dish and cabling myself without resorting to DTV's technicians. This HR21 receiver replaces a Hughes 10-250 which I have used for the past 4 years and which I was quite happy with but with DTV now putting out all HD channels in MPEG-4 format I had to change in order to receive them. Contrary to what DTV's technical support stated in several phone calls, I found that installing a 5 LNB dish and the HR21 was simplicity itself. It took me 45 minutes to install the dish and HR21 and I had all my channels in HD immediately. The receiver itself I find visually pleasing, it now matches all my home theatre components which are also black in color. The HD pictures are superb and the only reason I knocked a "star" off the rating was some lack of definition on Standard Def channels. However I have at the same time as buying the HR21, installed a new 56" Samsung LED DLP TV and it is quite possible that the Standard Definition fuzziness is due to the TV needing me to tune the picture better. All in all the HR21 performs as advertised and I couldn't have wished for better customer service than I received from ABT.

I use the DVR the most and I use the HD features. This is all good and not so hard to use. The picture is excellent (using HDMI).

The user interface is very slow. You have to learn to slow down you button pushing to allow it to keep up. Slowest cable box I've used compared with Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner and Tivo.

I was FUMING mad when I found out I could no longer "toggle" between two channels like I had on my TiVo for years!! DirecTv MUST solve this! I do love all the HD channel selections I get with this format receiver, however, it lacks most of the sophistication of TiVo!

The Product is great. The only problem is the directions are geared to a professional installer. No metion of needing a multiplexer, which I found out I needed. Simple "Tips" in the directions would have helped other than that it is very user friendly.

I was not happy with how my Tivo recorder performed with my HD DirecTV box. The Tivo could not record in High Definition and was starting to confuse me with addition and deleation of channels as the service packages changed. I really wanted a HD Tivo for DirecTV, but the companies no longer work together. I broke down and purchased the HR21700 DirecTV DVR and after some trouble starting up and a week or so of "resetting" the machine, it now works very well. I channel guild is better to work with, and I love the feature of playing a group of programs. For example, if you have 5 episodes of my latest guilty pleaure "How Clean is your House" on the BBC, if you click "PLAY"; all five episode will play in order. This is my new favorite feature. I will soon connect a second line to record two shows at once, and an ethernet cable to start VOD.

Writing this review is a bit of a dilemma for me. While the HR21-700 does enable HDTV and a stunning picture on my six-year-old Mitsubishi WS55909, it shouldn't be this painful.[...] What should have been up and running in under 1/2 hour including the call to DirecTV, took nearly four hours between waiting for customer support, being dropped, dialing back, waiting, getting dropped...On and on and only after having tech support have me try everything short of asking that I kick the unit, determine there was no hope in resuscitating HR21-700. So another (refurbished) unit was to be sent my way. Wait a minute; didn't I buy a "new" unit?Perhaps most of you know that DirecTV only leases it's units since 2006. Well, I didn't know this and thought I had bought the unit outright [...]. DirecTV had duly informed that unless I had paid [$] or more dollars for the unit, it was theirs. And that defective units with refurbished units...This just keeps getting better and better. Anyway, the new (refurbished) unit showed up, and being a bit dubious at this point, decided to plug it in first to the AVR to see if I had a startup screen BEFORE dismantling my current rig. I got lucky and this unit actually delivered a video image and a DirecTV startup screen. I went forward and replaced my older non-HD Tivo. Life was good for the moment.Later that evening, one of the 12 LEDs that form a lighted circle around the center dial went dark. While this in no way affects the general operation of the unit, it looks cheesy. While DirecTV support implied I should just live with it, I spent nearly [$] on this thing and I want it to work right for crying out loud.I called DirecTV and to make a long story shorter, asked for a "new" unit since the track record for the refurbished unit or this unit in general in terms of quality control wasn't winning me over. My refurbished replacement (third unit) is on it’s way.If you buy this unit, good luck. But once you get it working, you’ll probably be happy with it. I do prefer the Tivo interface to what DirecTV gives you but it’s not hard getting used to. I also notice there is no slow motion function ala Tivo that was a real nice feature for sports programming. Enough.
