DIRECTV HD DVR has an excellent picture. I recently purchased an HDTV and wanted to upgrade my current DVR to HD. When purchased through an outside vendor, there is no mandatory 2 year contract extension. You know the exact model of the dvr verses leasing from DIRECTV. In addition, you own the DVR.

The product is what it is. The problem is DirecTV. I was just replacing a receiver with this one. No changes what so ever. They said I had to extend a contract with them for 2 years. Love ABT Hate DirecTV

My receiver is hooked up to my HD set in the living room. The best feature is the 500mb hard drive. The HR23 model is the most current one they produce and will let you record 100 hours of HD programing. The other models HR 20-22 only let you record 50 hours.

I have nothing bad to say about this product.

Great Picture Great sound, Great streaming from my computer to view pictures and accessing my music, but it is very slow changing channels, info searching, If it were some what quicker it would be amazing, but I would buy again.

Can be a bit tricky to set up with regard to the input settings. With the amount of HD programming available, it would be great if Direct TV offered larger hard drive storage options with this unit.
All in all, a very good product.

Very fast setup - mostly plug and play after activation. This HR23 has auto-intelligence for the input of satellite dish being used - very smart. With HD input from Directv - this unit is able to display full 1080p in setup menu. It is a must to have the Swim technology for those that don't.

I upgraded from DirecTV's HR20. While the HR20 worked fine, the new HR23 has improved Video and greatly improved Audio! I am VERY pleased!

Can't believe I waited this long to enjoy the simplicity of DVR. Saves me alot of time!
Installation by Direct TV was free, including the backup line so I can watch and record a different channel at the same time.
