My wife had a portable radio she carried from room to room around the house, but it tended to drift off station. I already had a Sony ICF-38 that I used and recommended that she get the same thing. I told her that she should get a name brand portable to make sure of the quality. When I was younger I designed portable radios and found this one to be excellent.

We were looking for a replacement for our kitchen radio. Had to be small and not repulsive looking, but my hubby didn't want all the bells & whistles. No programmable digital whatevers. No doubling as an outdoor thermometer and a CD player, just a radio. A radio that gets stations in clearly. A radio that is easy to tune. A radio that can sit on a counter and not sound tinny. And we didn't want to spend a whole lot of money for it.

I bought this radio for my handicapped son. He had been using the Sony IFC-36 portable radio, but he really didn't need the two additional TV channels. He loves music and the sound is very good from the IFC-38. He is blind and he figured out where the on/off and volume controls were, which is great. I very much like this IFC-38 for him.

At the age of 71 years, I honestly can say that this radio is one of the finest that I have ever owned. It offers outstanding quality to begin with, superb sound and effortless led tunning. I listen to classical music everyday and this set gives me a lot of pleasure. Have the same batteries since December 9, 2010 and going on to February 9, 2011 and no signs of of battery weakness which speaks well for the design of this radio.

I use it daily as a replacement for the Casio brand radio. This is more stable and the sound quality is excellent. The only disadvantage is that it does not have a digital readout.

This is a decent radio for the money. I needed something simple for the kitchen. It's not the radio you want to use for your favorite music - but it is a nice little radio to stow away in the kitchen for when you want a quick update on the news or weather. It runs on batteries or electric.

I use this product while working at home and in the yard while working. I will also use it on the patio when I cookout and while camping. If the lights go out or there is a storm I will turn on the radio to find out the weather and news I need to know. I like the tone switch to make talk radio easier to understand. The price is great.

I use this radio all over the house & outside while gardening, fishing, or doing chores. I liked it so much that I bought two! Besides AC, it uses 4 AA batteries instead of the bulky, harder-to-find Ds. The sound quality & reception is comparable to many radios that are twice or more the price.

I use this Sony ICF/38 radio outdoors whilst tending our olive farm. Living in a rural area (Central California) we are unable to receive radio signals from San Francisco or Los Angeles. That was our problem. Now we can receive signals from San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. I am delighted with this radio, it is the best. I have ordered and total of four. I intend to always have a spare in case I misplace my. I also intend to give them as gifts.

I listed to NPR while I am getting ready in the morning and when I am doing chores around the house. Great radio for this although I sometimes need to find a good spot to put it for the best reception. I don't use a standard stereo because I like to be near the source of the sound, not blare the speakers from another room.

I bought this radio because of good reviews. I agree. Light weight, good reception and rechargable batteries last a long time in this radio. Not bulky at all to carry around. I had the ICF-36, the one with the TV bands for years. It was a great radio, but my two year old son managed to break it. The ICF-38 is just as good, you don't need the TV bands since they are digital now. The sound quality is great, and it gets good reception. I keep mine on all day long. Great value.

IMO, this is the best [$] radio you can buy. The sensitivity on the MW (AM) band is outstanding! The large speaker sounds great for FM music. The only negative...I do not like the on/off slider switch. Overall, a great value. Sony makes a quality product.

we use this as an everyday radio in the kitchen for morning and weekend news. it's okay for news reporting, but i would not suggest it for music -- sound quality is pretty flat. the sonly shower radio is MUCH better!

We bought this radio to pick up weather alerts and listen for school/municipal closings when we moved to a more rural community. Since, then it has worked great for this use, and for travel, the beach, camping, etc. The battery life is adequate, especially for running on 4 "AA" batteries. Most portables use 4 to 8 "C" size. It doesn't have the best sound, but for a hand held, it has more than enough volume.

As a mailman, we have to make do with a delivery vehicle with no radio. This is my second Sony radio, a step up from my last. The reception is excellent, and the price just cannot be beat. I put the radio up in the window and it can be heard over all the noise of driving along the curb with the window open. This is a great little unit.

This new replacement for the previous 4 Band AM-FM-TV-Weather Sony ICF-36 is a significant improvement. After less then one year of use and sending back for warranty repairs to Laredo,TX I through it out and tried Sony`s newer 2 Band AM-FM ICF-38. So far..it shows much better reception on both AM and FM Bands LED strength indicator still works and its antenna still holds in position all of which its older sibling failed to do.
