I'm probably not qualified to write a review, because I haven't used the DVD recorder yet. But I didn't buy this product for the DVD recorder; I bought it for the digital tuner and if there was a VCR/DVD player combo with a digital tuner, I would have bought that. This product allows me to record digital channels without any type of cable box and that's why I purchased it. I can program multiple channels and watch one show while I'm recording another, without paying for DVR, not to mention the digital cable package I would have had to purchase to even get DVR service. This unit does the job.

It was advertised to be simple to use but I find it a bit difficult. My main objective is to record on DVDs and this seems to be going OK. Technology is moving much too fast for me.

Quality DVD & Video unit, I think the programming is easy but my Wife thinks it's complicated, audio is excellent, picture is very good. I bought this unit hoping for reliability but only time will tell, more functions than I really need but all in all a very nice machine.
You will need an RF Modulator if you are using this player/tuner with an older TV.

It is set up with one of the 26 inch tv's mentioned to record shows missed while we are out; I've yet to learn more of the two connected but after support team got me going, all is well.I will save some cassettes to Disc as soon as I have the time and have read how to do it.

Difficult to find a VCR with a tuner anymore.
This fills that need very well while eliminating the need for an Hd / DTV Converter Box.

Easy setup and use
DVD Recorder too - bonus.
Remote easy to use, not confusing.

This DVD/VCR can record the digital signals in both modes (unlike the Panasonic model I had). It is easy to set up (with a hotline for questions)--just in case. It does require an RF converter for older analog televisions, but the picture is beautiful.
Reliable and durable. I have purchased a second one... in case they stop making it!

Super easy to hook up to TV and antenna following instructions in the manual. Using timer recording function to record TV shows on DVDs or VCR VHS tapes also super easy.

I don't think the VHS picture quality is quite as good as when I played tapes on my old VCR but since most movies are on DVD now it's not so important.

best one available when working--tracking better than any other I have tried. Unfortunately, no VCR picture when machine got hot--defective motherboard. Hope it is available again soon and that I get a good one.

I've had many DVD/VCRs, and recording DVD/VCRs, and know how to use them, but I tried everything to get the Toshiba to find digital channels, and no go. The TV it's connected to, gets them, but the Toshiba Unit comes up blue.

Picture is great - even scratched discs play better. It is a little tricky to program and there is one glitch; when changing the channel from 7 to 9 it skips back to 7. I have recorded on VHS tapes and the picture is better on tape too.

2 MAJOR BAD FEATURES I found are (1) all timed programs + date + clock settings are lost if electricity goes off after only 30 seconds. It allows up to 12 programs(I keep 8 permanently), way too much to reenter and power-outages do occur. (2) you have to press a 'time set' button to make the timer work. This turns unit off, if you turn it on again and forget to press 'time set' again the programs will not be recorded. I lost programs because of this bad feature.

have never been dissatisfied...still have original from several years;howevever, the 600 is the most versatile because I can edit disks from earlier Toshiba models.

I copy my favorite TV shows to a DVD so that I can watch at a later date. Also I want to copy vcr tapes to a dvd disc. This unit is great for such projects.

This unit solved all of my problems. I can now get all my channels over the air with my on roof antenna. No cable bills for me. Better yet, I can record DTV and those few stations that haven't converted to digital signals yet. Transferring my clunking VHS tapes to DVD format is done with the touch ONE button not to mention it has great quality. What a breeze. I only used the quick setup reference sheet but there are some many other DVD feature yet to be explored in the manual.

The JVR unit is more user friendly.
With the Toshiba you must go through an additional step to set it to record. If you just shet it off, it will not record the shows you program.

will get more years out of my vhs tapes and now have dvd player too. so far both work terrific. had brief set up problem which was solved by short call to help center. very nice guy. the whole order process was easy and product received on schedule despite snowbound airports in the east. highly recommend the product and abt.

We bought this product strictly because my husband has video cassettes that he wanted to be able to view. It is perfect for that purpose and it is simple to use. We are among the least tech-savvy people on earth and we can use it without difficulty.

I never saw anything great about the product because I was not able to use it. I connected it to my cable and scanned the channels. I assumed it would pick up all the channels including all HD, Ditigal channels as my LG TV did with its QAM tuner (about 60 channels). It only picked up about 6 at the low end of the spectrum 2 thru 11. I called the manufacturer and they said the tuner must have been defective and to send it back for repairs. I refused and returned it to ABT instead. I should have known better because I read a review on the Internet that, too, said the unit did NOT have a QAM turner - I should have listened. To add insult to injury, I set up the unit to tape a program that evening only to learn that the clock gained 1.5 hours over night - and, yes, I set it manually, NOT using its automatic setting that I was I had done (by the manufacturer. Tivo, here I come.

I do like the recording quality. The DVD recording quality is great at two hour per disk but not good at 6 hours. I'm not sure why they offer extended DVD recording if the picture quality is so poor. Having stated that I do like the DVD/VCR unit. I am glad I bought it. I might have rated this unit higher but I have only used it several times.

We were unable to purchase a VCR/DVD player here that would be comparable to the Sony we had. We ordered a similar Sony online, but it did not have a tuner, so it could not be hooked up to our cable without additional purchase of a cable box, so we returned it. This Toshiba was the answer for us. The bonus is that it will record on DVD. The online website was very helpful in our decision and we would recommend Abt again

I needed help to set it up, but now that it's up and running it seems fine. The clock could be larger--impossible to read across the room. A little slow to respond to the remote. I'll keep it.

So far not bad. Set up was a little confusing and required a call to the tech support center.
Very poor set up instructions included.
They shouldn't assume the customer knows anything.
The VCR and DVD have different outputs.

I record a fair amount of TV to VHS and then take the tapes to several different rooms to watch -- basement in front of the treadmill, bedroom before going to sleep, kitchen while doing dishes, etc. (VCRs used to be cheap and plentiful, so I still have several). When TV went digital, I did not want to go the Tivo route because I want portability. I tried recording some shows to DVD instead, thinking I would gradually switch to that method. Well, recording to DVD is very unreliable, I found (but that is another post). So, I was very happy to find this VCR which will record Digital TV to VHS! And it does a lot more! I have used it to:
1. Record over-the-air digital TV to VCR. I accidentally discovered that the tuner is so strong that it pulls in two networks without being attached to an antenna! It has a built-in digital-to-analog converter, so it plays the digital stations on my analog TV.
2. Hooked it up to Charter analog cable; records that just fine, too, to both DVD and VCR. I only did one recording to DVD, to make sure it worked. Don't know if this will be any more reliable than previous attempts at recording to DVD, but I doubt it. From what I have read, recording TV to DVD is unreliable no matter what machine you use.
3. Records my old home VHS tapes to DVD.
4. Records DVD to VHS; tested this and it worked, although I don't know that I will use this feature.

Picture quality is good, in my opinion, but I am happy with the picture quality on my old analog TVs. You really can't expect the best picture when converting digital to analog.

What I don't like:
1. The remote does not have any TV controls.
2. The downside of having so many functions built-in is that it can be complicated/confusing. I was able to figure everything out by reading the manual, though.
3. The biggest thing, and reason it gets four stars instead of five, is that you have to press the Timer Set button to "lock in" your timer recordings. When you do this, the unit turns off and cannot be used without "unlocking" the timer settings. If you later turn the VCR on and turn it back off without again pressing the Timer Set button, the unit will not do the timer recordings. Inconvenient and could easily lead to failure to record.

Overall, I am happy with this machine and am considering buying a second one.

Great that it can record on both VHS and DVD. (VHS is ALWAYS easier than DVD on any unit.)Auto-clock function will not work properly. Auto-clock has to be turned off completely, or will cause problems with manual time setting.Should have come with a Universal remote.Cannot delete sub-channels from channel set-up without deleting main HD channel, so you have to go through all channels when channel surfing. Spent 2 hours on the phone with Toshiba reps, who finally declared, "that's just the way it works." (Or, doesn't work!)Bottom Line: Cannot recommend this unit (a firmware upgrade is sorely needed; are you listening, Toshiba?), [...]

I use this mostly to record DTV to DVD from my antenna. Pretty easy to program and the recordings look good too. Skipping through commercials is great.

Had multiple problems trying to set-up unit. Auto-clock wouldn't work. Disappointed that Toshiba couldn't provide a universal remote, like many of their other units. Mainly, though, spent an hour on phone with Toshiba rep trying to figure out how to delete sub channels (like 5.2, 5.3) when all I wanted in channel memory was main channel. Toshiba rep finally decided our unit was defective and that we should return to Abt. It has now been almost a month and replacement unit is still on "backorder". VERY DISAPPOINTING!

The DVD player with up-conversion worked great with our Samsung LED TV. The digital tuner however could not tune digital cable channels.

Have to turn up sound quite high to hear it. When viewing videos, have to turn it up all the way and still can't hear voices very well. Contacted Toshiba and they made suggestions but none of them helped.

The Toshiba DVR670 provides a great picture in either VCR or disk mode. The unit does not have controls on the remote to adjust volume or off and on for the tv. It does allow you to change channels though.
