Comments about Panasonic Panasonic DVD/VHS Combo Recorder/Player In Black:

The manual is a little challenging at first, but the process makes sense once you work through it. Copying from video to DVD is streamlined and the editing capabilities are helpful. An unexpected bonus is the excellent tuner -- we receive channels we didn't know existed!

Comments about Panasonic Panasonic DVD/VHS Combo Recorder/Player In Black:

My VCR smoked so I needed a replacement and decided to upgrade. This machine offers a lot of function: DVD recorder, VCR, you can dub in either direction, HD upsampling to 1080.

It uses about every standard-def disk format known to man including double layer. It uses the largely Panasonic DVD-RAM (expensive, harder to get) to achieve some DVR types of function, mainly time shifting. You can come home in the middle of the show and start watching it from the beginning, while it continues to record.

A little note in the manual entitles you to a discount on blank media from Panasonic's web site.

Big strength: It includes a digital tuner so presumably, it won't become obsolete in February '09. I actually prefer the Sony brand - but their combo machines didn't include any tuner!

Weaknesses: Like most, the manual is not great and with a machine as capable (complex) as this, that's an even bigger drawback.

I would have organized the on screen programming menus somewhat differently. There are functions that are awkward to get to that should, ultimately be a button on the remote.

They should include a blank DVD-RAM. Getting two sided DVD-RAM disks probably is a waste of money - you have to flip it manually.

Overall: 1. Great machine 2. Buy single sided DVD-RAM disks. 3. Read the manual thoroughly...twice. 4. Practice, practice, practice using it.

It's Abt, so it's great.

Comments about Panasonic Panasonic DVD/VHS Combo Recorder/Player In Black:

I am both physically and space challenged as I am legally blind and live on my sailboat. I have the unit attached to a 23" DELL monitor/TV combination unit. I receive TV transmissions via. an antenna attached to my mast. I am able to receive many HDTV signals over the air for free. With my limited sight I now can see many things crisp and clear that I couldn't make out or receive before. The instruction manuel will walk you through instalation, playing, and transfer of media from one form to another. If I could do it with my limitations, so can you. I am constently amazed by the versatility of this unit. [...]

I bought this to replace a 2005 model of basically the same Panasonic machine that falled in under 2 years. I looked at Samsung & Toshiba but Panasonic was still the higher quality machine, just hope it lasts longer than 22 months like my last one.
