Display Details To Consider

To begin our breakdown of the LG CineBeam Q, we'll go over the most important aspect of any projector: the imagery. When discussing the visuals offered on this projector, Abt expert Carl said, "In a dark room this thing absolutely shines… the colors pop, you get good detail in the bright and dark areas of the scenes and it handles motion well enough to keep everything looking natural". The LG CineBeam Q is a DLP projector, or a Digital Light Processor projector. DLP projectors are known for offering strong reliability, high brightness capabilities and amazing image representation at higher resolutions. Every projector, DLP or not, requires a lamp or light source to function, and there are several different types of lighting these devices can utilize. The LG CineBeam Q employs a three-channel RGB laser light source. RGB laser light projectors like this one use red, green and blue lasers to create detailed effects and images onscreen. The specific RGB laser light source featured on this projector is rated to last up to 20,000 hours, which equates to plenty of watch parties and movie nights. If you're not a projector enthusiast, one display factor that likely means more to you is image resolution. The LG CineBeam Q can project your content in brilliant 4K resolution, which offers four times the pixel density of Full HD.

The brightness of your projector is measured in lumens; the higher the lumens, the brighter the image will be. If you plan to watch in well-lit rooms, you may be looking for a brighter model, but if you plan to watch outdoors, you may not require as many lumens. The LG CineBeam Q is measured in ANSI lumens, a metric that provides a more accurate brightness measurement. This model has a brightness of 500 ANSI lumens, which equates to about 8,000 lumens, so your content is sure to shine onscreen. To match this brightness, the projector also reproduces colors with up to 154% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, ensuring that every scene is vivid and dynamic. When the time comes to watch something, the LG CineBeam Q can perform other tasks too, like Auto Focus and Auto Screen Adjustment, realigning the screen to remove any image distortion. Similar to Auto Screen Adjustment, Carl notes, "Another feature this projector has is an auto keystone adjustment, so even if it's not completely centered, it's able to automatically adjust the picture to make it show up flat on the wall. Also, it has a setup wizard function built into the menu that helps even a novice projector user get the picture focused and looking great with almost no effort".

A Run Down of Projector Ratios

We know what you may be thinking, "Projector ratios? What does that mean?". Every projector you shop will likely have three different ratio values listed in the specifications and while they're typically in the small, easy-to-ignore fine print, they do hold value in choosing the right projector for you. These three are aspect ratio, contrast ratio and throw ratio. Aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and height of the image, representing the image shape(s) the device can accommodate. While most projectors offer either a 16:9 or a 4:3 aspect ratio, the LG CineBeam Q offers both. 16:9 supports content like widescreen DVDs and Blu-Rays, while 4:3 supports classic films and IMAX specials. With both ratios on your side, you'll be able to experience a wider selection of content with the LG projector. The second value to consider is contrast ratio. Contrast ratio refers to the difference between the brightest and darkest points the projector can produce. The LG CineBeam Q has a 450,000:1 contrast ratio, which delivers deep, rich black hues and clear, detailed color overall. The last ratio to note is the throw ratio of the device. The "throw" of a projector refers to the distance between the projector lens and the projector screen you're using. The throw ratio is the width of the image projected in relation to the throw distance. With this in mind, the LG CineBeam Q has a throw ratio of 1.2. This numerical value may not mean much to the average customer, so here's what it means: For every foot of image width, the projector needs to be placed 1.2 feet away. So if the width of your image is 100 inches (about 8.3 feet), you'll need to place your projector about 9.96 feet away from the screen.

Extra Technology, Connectivity & More

Now that we've reviewed the technical aspects of the display, we can dive into other beneficial LG CineBeam Q features that are bound to take your watch parties to the next level. The projector comes with a webOS interface, an advanced LG operating system. With webOS on your side, you'll be able to stream blockbuster films and hit TV series on platforms like Apple TV, YouTube, Disney+ and Prime Video. If you have home videos you'd like to watch on the LG CineBeam Q, the device also supports wireless content mirroring or casting, no matter what type of smartphone you have. Just tap into Screen Share on your Android or Apple AirPlay 2 on your iPhone. While the LG CineBeam Q already has powerful built-in speakers, the projector also supports Bluetooth pairing with Dual Audio Output. This gives you the option to connect two additional devices to the projector simultaneously, like headphones, soundbars or Bluetooth speakers, widening the soundstage for a showstopping audio performance. Why would you want to do this? In the video above, Carl explains, "With a small projector comes a small speaker and that one that's built into the CineBeam Q is at no risk of replacing an external sound system. The dialogue comes through clearly and it does get decently loud for being as small as it is, but there's no bass, so it does leave a lot to be desired if you're watching any kind of action movie".

No matter what you connect, all of the LG CineBeam Q functions can be easily managed with the included remote control. After learning about all of the projector's features and capabilities, you may be surprised to hear how compact the device is. That's right; the LG Cinebeam Q manages to offer an immense amount of technology at only five inches high, 5.5 inches long and about three inches wide. With the small, three-pound design and the help of an innovative rotating handle, you can feel free to take the LG CineBeam Q wherever you wish to watch next. Outside of using the handle for carrying, "it also allows you to easily position it [the handle], making sure you're always able to get the right angle".
