Most storage-tank water heaters are large cylinders that heat cold water as it exits at the top of the unit. Storage-tank water heaters are heated by either gas or electricity. Water heaters account for about 15% of your monthly energy costs, so swapping an older model for an energy star model will save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Tankless water heaters are much different looking than the traditional storage-tank version. They are suitcase-sized units that only heat water when it's needed. It eliminates the need for constantly heating and reheating water causing a possible tank failure.
