What is a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) and how does it work?

A Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) is a self-contained heating and cooling unit, commonly used in hotels and commercial spaces but also great for residential rooms. It allows you to control the temperature in a single space year-round, offering both heating and cooling functions in one device.

Should I choose a PTAC unit with electric heat or a heat pump?

For colder climates or areas with harsh winters, a PTAC with electric heat is recommended, as it performs better in freezing temperatures. While PTACs with heat pumps are less expensive initially, they are less efficient as temperatures approach freezing. Refer to our section on Heat Pump vs Electric Heat for detailed information.

How do I determine the right size PTAC unit for my room?

The heating and cooling capacity of PTAC units is measured in BTUs. For effective climate control, plan on about 30 BTUs per square foot of space. This will help ensure your unit can maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the year.

What are the electrical requirements for PTAC units?

Most PTAC units require a 220V outlet on a 20 amp breaker, which is more power than a standard wall outlet provides. Always double-check the specific power needs of your chosen unit before installation. For more details, see the Amps and Volts section.

Can I install a PTAC unit myself?

Because PTAC units are in-wall systems and often need dedicated electrical connections, most installations are done professionally. We recommend making sure your installer is familiar with both carpentry and electrical work. For expert assistance or questions, contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stay comfortable year-round with a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner. Part heater, part AC, these convenient devices make it easy to adjust the climate of a single room. Often used in commercial environments, most people are familiar with PTAC units as hotel air conditioners. However, they can work just as well in a home setting.

Heat Pump vs Electric Heat

If you plan on fighting Chicago winters or other seriously cold environments, a PTAC with electric heat is the way to go. The alternative, models with heat pumps, are less expensive upfront. But, they aren't as efficient. If outside temperatures even approach freezing, you'll be much more comfortable with electric heat. The heating and cooling power of a PTAC is measured in BTUs. For the most effective climate control plan on roughly 30 BTUs per square foot.

Amps and Volts

Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners often require more power than a standard wall outlet will provide. Most require a 220V outlet on a 20 amp breaker. But be sure to double-check the power needs of any model you're interested in before buying.

Because PTACs are in-wall units, most are professionally installed. If you're in the Chicagoland area, give us a call at 800-860-3577 so we can help. If not, make sure your installers are comfortable with both carpentry and basic electrical work, as they will likely need to install a 220v outlet. And of course, wherever you live, feel free to give us a ring with any questions you may have.
