What Features Do They Share?

Before we get into what makes them different, let's discuss some of the features they do share. They're both powered by Samsung's Q4 AI Processor, support HDR 10+ and run on the Tizen smart TV platform found on many Samsung screens. Both of these TVs are also great for gaming, with Auto Low Latency Mode and Super Ultra Wide Game View. With support for Q-Symphony, both of these pair perfectly with a Samsung soundbar, too. Now that we've established the ways these screens are the same, let's explore the key differences that might make you choose one over the other.

Picture Quality

Picture quality is arguably the most important feature on any television. While both the Q7F and Q8F are solid options for their price, the Q7F does lack certain upgrades. While it has a direct lit panel (which supports better image quality), it doesn't feature local dimming, which means the contrast isn't as good as on the Q8F. The Q8F has Dual LED backlighting for better color accuracy (great for documentaries or movies with lush scenery), better contrast, better overall brightness and better color saturation. The Q8F can also use Samsung Vision AI to intelligently adjust picture and sound settings based on what you're watching. In terms of motion handling, the Q7F has a 60 Hz panel, which is good for casual viewers, but if you're a cinephile or avid gamer, the Q8F's 120 Hz panel might be a better choice for you.

Anti-Glare

While not explicitly a picture quality feature, anti-glare design definitely impacts your viewing enjoyment. Our video team tested the anti-glare properties of each screen in our studio and found the 7 and the 8 to be fairly evenly matched, with the Q8F just slightly better. In this match, we don't consider anti-glare to be a deal breaker.

Gaming

We highlighted some of the shared gaming features on these Samsung TVs above, but there are a few additional features that make the Q8F a slightly better choice if you frequently use your TV for gaming. Variable refresh rates and support for FreeSync Premium provide even smoother refresh rates for less lag while gaming. Dynamic black EQ adjustment can also aid you in games that make use of shadowy corners (Resident Evil, anyone?).

Audio

Of course, the way your TV sounds is also important. Both of these models feature a 2-channel, 20 watt speaker system, which we'd consider decent. As with most modern screens, they're too thin to include any robust audio equipment, so we always recommend pairing with a soundbar. In this case, we especially recommend adding a Samsung soundbar so you can take advantage of the Q-Symphony feature. Again, the Q8F adds a feature to enhance the experience: with Adaptive Sound+, the TV automatically optimizes audio based on the type of content you're watching. It also features the Active Voice Amplifier for clearer dialogue and 360 Audio that can work with headphones like the Samsung Galaxy buds. One important difference that doesn't directly impact the sound (but will impact how you listen) is that only the Q8F has an optical connection. Keep that in mind if you already have a soundbar you love (or are shopping for a new one).

Smart Features

One of the smart features that sets the Q8F apart from the Q7F is far-field voice interaction; this feature means you can control the TV with your voice without having to pick up your remote. However, both have voice control remotes, so you can still use voice commands to control the Q7F. Does the added convenience of remote-free voice control matter to you? If so, the Q8F wins this match. Live Translate is another smart feature exclusive to the Q8F, which can translate different languages on certain programs in real time. The Q8F also includes Daily Board, which turns your screen into an informational display with your calendar, the weather and more. These features are nice, but most likely not essential for most users; they don't impact the picture or audio quality, either.

Samsung Q7F vs. Q8F: Which Should You Get?

After all of this…which of these Samsung TVs should you get? It all depends on your needs and preferences. If you're a casual viewer or gamer, go with the Q7F. It offers a nice QLED picture with good color quality and a variety of helpful smart features. If you have a larger budget and want the best picture possible for sports, movies and gaming, the Q8F is a better choice. Overall, Samsung has a reputation for making great televisions, and these are no exception.
