$20M Worth Of Appliances Sold In 4 Hours Of Cash For Clunkers Program

Chicago - The Illinois Commerce Department says at least $3 million of an instant appliances rebate budget was used by noon Friday as the program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with Energy Star qualified models began.

Consumers bought $20 million worth of appliances in the first four hours of the program.

The program is scheduled to take place between April 16 and April 25, 2010, although experts warn the $6.2 million in stimulus funds could run out quickly. The commerce department says they expect the money to last for at least a few days.

Consumers can get a 15 percent rebate, up to $400 per appliance, and many stores are offering additional discounts.

Eligible products include

  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Room air conditioners

To receive new product rebates, consumers must purchase from participating retailers.

Consumers who purchase a new refrigerator (mini-fridges excluded) or freezer, can receive an additional mail-in rebate with proof that their old appliance was hauled away when the new one was delivered.
