Where Should I Install My Outdoor TV?
Full Shade vs. Partial Sun vs. Full Sun
Before you worry about installing your outdoor TV, you need to ensure you're buying the correct model first. If you have a designated patio or outdoor living space, you should determine how much ambient light from the sun that space gets; the amount of sunlight you're contending with will determine what kind of TV you need. Full shade models are designed for installation in areas sheltered from the sun, like a covered deck or garage. Partial sun models are ideal for installation under a pergola or some kind of covering. Full sun models can withstand the most sunlight, ideal for installation on an exterior wall, or maybe near a pool.
Of course, intense sunlight can make it harder to see the picture even on a full sun model, so try to install your outdoor TV in a spot with some shade if you can. You can also install a partial sun or full sun model in a shadier area; all you'll notice is a brighter screen. However, we don't recommend installing a full shade model in a sunny spot of your yard as the screen won't be bright enough.
What Does Your Back Yard Look Like?
When deciding where you're going to install the TV, think about what your space looks like and what you primarily use it for. For an outdoor living space, the screen should be centrally located, so people can watch no matter where they're seated. For example, if you're having friends over to watch a major sporting event in the summer or fall, everyone should have an unobstructed view of the action. Are you planning to add an outdoor television to your outdoor kitchen? The configuration should be slightly different; make sure your TV is installed far enough away from potential food splatters and spills. If the outdoor kitchen is primarily used for cooking and doesn't have nearby seating, install your TV in the eyeline of the person cooking. If your outdoor kitchen also has an island or bar with seating, install the television across from the seating so guests can watch while they eat or drink. For those looking to add an outdoor TV to their pool area, consider the overall layout of your yard; the TV should be centrally located so people can see from the pool or the deck. If you don't have an exterior wall conveniently located nearby, you may want to consider placing the TV on an outdoor TV stand or another freestanding structure.
Consider the Climate
What's the weather like where you live? If rain is common, you'll want to pay attention to the IP rating of your outdoor TV. These ratings correspond to different levels of water and dust resistance so you can determine how durable the device is. Even if your model doesn't explicitly state an IP rating, the owner's manual should explain the weather conditions it can withstand, and to what extent. When determining where to install your TV, consider shielding your device from harsh weather, even those it's designed to withstand. If your area gets a lot of rain, consider installation beneath a pergola, awning or other patio cover to reduce the exposure to moisture.
Adding an Outdoor Soundbar
To further elevate your outdoor entertainment setup, add an outdoor soundbar. If you do plan to enhance your outdoor TV's sound with a speaker, make sure you have sufficient space for both devices on the wall or other installation space. You'll also need to make sure you have sufficient power access for both devices. As with your television, make sure you invest in an outdoor soundbar made to withstand rain and heat.
Seating
The final component of a great outdoor TV setup is ensuring you have sufficient seating that ensures proper view of the screen. Add patio chairs and a sectional so people can sit together or apart; we also recommend some tables where people can set their phones, drinks or snacks. Most importantly, make sure your furniture is properly angled so you and your family or guests can see the television; for the most part, you can lay out the furniture similar to how you would in your living room. If your TV is installed by your pool, you don't need to worry as much about the seating; just make sure your friends can see the screen while they relax on a pool float.
