TSA Measuring Guide

Stay one step ahead when you fly by preparing your luggage for airport security with Abt's TSA Measuring Guide.

Getting Started

As we all know, tighter TSA regulations have been imposed to ensure safety for travelers. This is why Abt has put together a TSA Luggage Regulations guide that will help prepare your luggage to be TSA compliant. In just three steps, this guide will help you breeze through security checkpoints by showing you how to properly measure, weigh, and pack your bags before traveling.

Step 1: Measuring Your Checked & Carry-On Luggage

How to measure your luggage
When it comes to the first step in making sure your luggage is TSA compliant, it is necessary to know the size and weight restrictions set by the airline you are flying. Most airlines offer similarly sized overhead compartments, however, it is recommended to confirm the dimensions before heading to the airport, especially when traveling with a foreign airline.

Once you know the exact size available, it is time to measure the height, length, and width of the desired carry-on luggage. While measuring, be sure to include any handles or wheels on your bags. Refer to the image guide for assistance measuring.

Step 2: Weighing Your Bag

Luggage Scales
Most airlines are very particular when it comes to the weight of your luggage. In many cases, airlines impose additional fees due to overweight luggage, which is why weighing your bags before leaving is highly recommended.

In America, the standard weight limit on a checked bag is 50 lbs, but some airline will be pickier about how heavy a checked bag can be. To most accurately weigh a piece of bag utilize a luggage scale. A Luggage Scale is simple and easy to use and will provide you with the most accurate bag weight. Luggage scales are small enough to fit within your bag, meaning you can take your scale with you so you will be able to ensure your luggage is the ideal weight for the return flight. Keep in mind, many airports offer scales, however, if your bag is overweight you will need to leave an item behind or pay for the overweight fee.

Step 3: Properly Packing Your Checked or Carry-On Luggage

The TSA has implemented a 3-1-1 rule, which limits the number of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes through a checkpoint. For your checked items you are allowed to bring one quart-sized bag these items which are limited to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. The only exceptions to this rule are for any duty-free liquids in a secure container, medication, or for an infant's nourishment. Containers with more than 3.4 ounces must be checked in your bag. A great way to make sure your liquids are kept safe in your checked bag is to use packing cubes. Packing cubes will allow you to separate your belongings into pouches in your bag which will save space and make for an organized suitcase.
Traveler's Tip: To save space within you luggage in order to fit those souvenirs you acquired on your journey is to roll your clothes.

Traveler's Tip: Make sure to pack your toiletries away in your checked bag to avoid being pulled aside and have your bags searched.

Other Things To Consider

TSA-Approved Locks

TSA-approved locks will allow the Transportation Security Administration to open your Suitcase if necessary and re-lock your baggage without damaging your lock or Suitcase. If you do not have a pre-approved lock then, unfortunately, the TSA may cut off your lock rendering it unusable or cut through your suitcase permanently destroying it.

Luggage Tags & Accent Kits

Luggage tags are a great way to be able to differentiate between your luggage in a crowd, while providing you confidence knowing that is your own item. These small customizations can have a large impact; making your luggage reflect your fashion style.
