What is Auracast?

What is Auracast? This new wireless technology is the future of audio. Auracast is a broadcasting feature built on Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio; unlike traditional Bluetooth, however, Auracast enables one-to-many broadcasts, rather than one-to-one. We'll explain exactly what this technology is, what types of products feature this technology and how it can benefit you.

How Does Auracast Work?

Auracast requires three components to work: a broadcaster, an assistant and a receiver. In non-technical terms, there are three pieces of the puzzle:

  • -a phone, TV or other transmitter broadcasts an audio stream
  • -a user connects to the broadcast via a smartphone or smartwatch
  • -nearby Auracast-compatible headphones or hearing aids connected to the phone or watch receive the stream

There is no pairing required to tune into the broadcast.

How is Auracast Different from Regular Bluetooth?

One of the biggest differences between the technologies is that Bluetooth requires device pairing, while Auracast does not. With Bluetooth, for example, you'd need to pair your earbuds to your phone to listen to Spotify or other music streaming apps. With Auracast, there's no pairing required. Unlike Bluetooth, Auracast also enables an unlimited number of listeners. Depending on the quality of the audio stream, Auracast can also offer clearer sound with less delay, which is particularly important for accessibility.

Auracast for Personal Use, Entertaining & More

If you and your roommate or significant other both own Auracast-enabled devices, you can easily enjoy the same playlist or podcast from anywhere in your home. Not everyone can—or wants to—invest in a serious home audio system. But with Auracast-compatible devices, you can enjoy audio from an unlimited number of compatible speakers (the JBL Flip 7, for example) that fill the entire space. The best part? Auracast-enabled devices don't have to belong to the same brand to connect, so your friends can all bring their compatible speakers to get the party started.

Auracast in Public Places

One of the biggest breakthroughs for Auracast is its function as an accessibility aid. Hearing aid users, for example, can be supplied with a receiver at venues that support Auracast, like movie theaters. Silent screens in places like gyms, waiting rooms and airports can now be heard with Auracast-compatible devices. Auracast can also be used in locations that require translation services, such as conferences and meetings.
