What is RGB Mini LED? Understanding the Newest TV Technology
What is RGB Mini LED Technology?
RGB Mini LED is a display technology that uses red, green and blue backlighting for brighter, more colorful and more lifelike picture quality. Think of this technology as an upgraded version of original Mini LED technology, and it's one of the first true innovations in TV picture quality since OLED. The main draw of these colorful LED lights is HDR color volume, or the number of colors a TV can display across different brightness levels. Many brands are aiming for, or are already claiming they produce, 100% color volume. Casual viewers may not notice or care if their TV achieves 100% HDR color volume, but the improved colors on these TVs are definitely noticeable.
Pros of RGB Mini LED
- Lifelike Color & Contrast: Color is intense, vivid and really pops. The contrast is incredible, which makes it easier to watch TV in rooms with a lot of ambient light.
- Superior Performance: These TVs boast excellent performance without the burn-in risks that frequently accompany OLED TVs.
- Uniform Brightness: There aren't any dark corners on the screen.
- Pure Light Source: Neo QLED displays push blue light through a Quantum Dot film and an LCD filter layer to create colors, whereas RGB hardware skips the filters entirely, firing pure red, green, and blue light directly from microscopic LEDs for unmatched color accuracy and localized light control.
- Great for Movies: The improved brightness is ideal for watching movies, particularly newer, high-quality content.
- Better Gaming: RGB Mini LED TVs feature high refresh rates and pure color to maximize gaming performance on consoles with HDR content like PS5 and Xbox.
- Lower Blue Light Emission: Greater control over the blue lights in these panels means reduced blue light emission, which is gentler on your eyes.
Cons of RGB Mini LED
- Premium Price Point: These TVs are definitely a bigger up-front investment. However, as the technology becomes more widely available, it's likely that these TVs will become more affordable.
- Off-Axis Viewing: The side-angle viewing on these TVs isn't quite as good as on OLED TVs, which is an important factor if you're shopping for a TV in a wide room.
- Color Haloing (Crosstalk): Because individual red, green, and blue lights sit right next to each other, intense bright colors can sometimes bleed across zones, creating a faint, unwanted color tint where the shades meet.

Different Brand Names for RGB Mini LED
Samsung RGB Micro LED
Samsung's RGB Micro LED TVs use incredibly small red, green and blue LEDs that emit light independently. Their RGB TVs are powered by the Micro RGB AI Engine Pro, which produces lifeline color with incredible depth and vibrancy, along with smooth motion and sharper detail. Samsung also notes that their RGB TVs achieve 100% color gamut.
LG Micro RGB evo
LG's first generation of RGB Mini LED TVs are called Micro RGB evo, with individual RGB light zones. Their televisions promise 100% color coverage, and the brand claims their screens produce over a billion colors. New, more powerful processors enable a feature LG calls "RGB Primary Color Ultra," which they claim reproduces the full color spectrum.
Sony True RGB
Sony was the last of the big 3 TV brands to release their RGB Mini LED TVs. Their technology is called "True RGB," which Sony says is because their TVs feature independently-controlled red, green and blue diodes. Their RGB TVs are powered by the new RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro, which promises improved brightness, purer color and reduced blooming.
In short, all of these TVs have the same underlying technology. They each feature their own unique processors, but they're fundamentally doing the same thing. As we noted above, each brand claims in their own way to achieve 100% color volume.
