What makes Abt, Abt?

Our Story

In 1936, Jewel Abt—a Hungarian immigrant—used her $800 life savings to start a small radio shop with her husband David in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. By offering the day's most innovative products and always focusing on providing the best customer experience, Abt quickly made a name for itself. Within 20 years, the business had outgrown its modest storefront and upgraded to a larger location. It would be the first of many moves, and a precursor to our later growth.

Today, Abt is the largest independently-owned, single-location retailer of electronics, appliances, and home goods in the USA. Anchored by a 100,000 sq. ft showroom, our Glenview, IL campus locally serves a 100-mile radius, reaching an enthusiastically loyal customer base spread over four states. A visit to Abt goes beyond just shopping—it's an experience unlike any other store. Guests can gawk at the tropical fish in our 7,500 gallon saltwater aquarium, catch a dancing fountain show in our soaring atrium, and pop into the BlueStar kitchen on weekends for free fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.
