Swamp Coolers: Evaporative Air Coolers
If you live in a dry climate and are looking for an efficient way to stay cool this summer, evaporative coolers are an excellent option. Unlike standard air conditioners that use a refrigerant to lower air temperatures, swamp coolers work by blowing warm air over damp cooler pads. As the fan blows, moisture in the pads evaporates, cooling the air while adding moisture to it. To ensure these pads don't dry out completely, a small pump brings moisture to them from the internal water supply.
Evap coolers don't use power-hungry components like compressors. As a result, they are far more energy efficient than most cooling systems. While window units use 400+ watts to cool even small areas, some swamp coolers only need around 100 watts of power. This dramatic difference makes evaporative coolers an excellent choice in climates with dry air. For those living climates with a higher humidity level, consider a portable air conditioner instead.
Although typical cooling solutions like central air have their place, evaporative coolers use less power than virtually any other option.
