How Do They Work?

Soundbars allow for different levels of high-quality audio to come from one speaker for easier use. The audio will travel around the room, the intensity enhanced throughout your living space. An active soundbar has all amplification built into the device, allowing you to simply plug it in and get to listening. Passive soundbars, on the other hand, require support from separate home theater receivers and speakers. But how does the sound manage to move and envelope watchers and listeners? While the center channel speakers project the audio directly toward you, the left and right speakers are angled at the walls in order to reverberate and bounce, creating a near-surround sound experience. If your room design is not the typical square or rectangle, this "beaming" method may not circulate as effectively, but your device will adjust the sound to your specific room as best as possible. This process begins after hooking your soundbar up to the TV; on your screen, you will be able to choose the size and shape of the room, along with the location of the seats. Although this speaker technology projects audio fairly well, it's still suggested that the bigger the room, the bigger the speaker.

Connectivity & Other Features

Not very tech-savvy? No problem; soundbars are quite easy to set up. Connecting to your television requires plugging a cable into both your device and your TV to pair them. A menu on your screen will walk you through next steps. While this process is fairly straightforward, there are two different ways to connect. The first is an optical cable, which is often provided by the manufacturer in the same box as your device. The second option, which offers more benefits, is an HDMI cable. When using an HDMI cable, you're able to connect your cable box, video game console, or Blu-ray player directly into your speaker in order to maximize the sound. An HDMI connection can also default all TV audio to your soundbar every time, giving you the ability to use your TV remote to control the speaker instead of the included remote. There are many features built into your soundbar, like a subwoofer that amplifies the bass for deep and rich sound in your shows, movies and music. They also have the power to seamlessly switch between different audio/video components whenever you decide to change the media you're consuming. Some of these models even come with built-in DVD/Blu-ray players to save you space on your TV stand. Several have WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, giving you access to wireless streaming through your phone or laptop.
