Synology DS225PLUS DiskStation Compact 2-Bay Network Attached Storage

The Synology DS225PLUS DiskStation compact 2-bay network attached storage (NAS) enclosure combines built-in 2.5GbE networking with up to 40 TB of raw storage using two separately purchased 20 TB drives.1 Sequential transfers exceed 282 MB/s read and 217 MB/s write in Synology testing.2 A quad-core Intel Celeron J4125 processor and 2 GB of DDR4 non-ECC memory power Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) for private file access, photo organization, backup and IP-camera recording. Designed for homes, home offices, small teams and branch offices, it brings sharing, synchronization and recovery into one compact private hub.

Key Features

Private Cloud Access with File Version History

Move between mobile apps, desktop clients and browser access without moving your files out of your private storage hub. Synology Drive brings file access and sharing to those different interfaces, while version history lets you roll back a file after accidental deletion, an editing mistake or malware. That recovery path is especially useful when the latest copy is not the one you need.

Automatic Photo Backup and Secure Sharing

Keep photos and media in a private collection, with automatic backup helping bring your content together. Synology Photos adds album organization so collections are easier to browse and secure sharing links for passing along the photos you want others to see.

Real-Time Team Collaboration

Work on documents together instead of passing separate copies back and forth. Synology Office supports real-time editing, while MailPlus provides privately hosted email. Synology Chat adds public, private and group messaging, bringing conversations and collaborative work onto the same privately managed platform.

Multi-Site Synchronization and Cloud Integration

One-way or two-way NAS synchronization helps branch offices keep data aligned with a central office. More than 20 cloud connectors also link NAS storage with services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, supporting workflows that span local and cloud storage.

Hybrid Share caches cloud data locally, giving distributed storage a local access point rather than relying only on cloud access. This combines the role of a private storage hub with cloud integration for teams working across locations.3

Backup, Immutable Snapshots and Recovery

Active Backup Suite centralizes protection for Windows, Linux and MacOS devices, virtual machines and cloud accounts. Bare-metal recovery provides a path to restoring a complete device, while scheduled NAS backups protect the storage hub itself. Immutable snapshots and offsite replication add recovery options when mistakes or malware threaten important data.

Surveillance Station for Up to 25 Cameras

Turn private storage into a central hub for IP-camera recording with Surveillance Station, supporting up to 25 cameras at 1080p.4 Compatibility with more than 8,700 IP-camera models gives you a broad selection of cameras for physical security. Two default camera licenses are included; additional licenses and cameras are purchased separately.

Centralized Fleet Monitoring and Administration

Manage multiple Synology systems through Central Management System, using group policies, delegated tasks and batch updates to coordinate administration. Active Insight adds cloud-based visibility into performance, backup status and login activity, helping you oversee systems across locations rather than checking each one in isolation.5

2.5GbE Networking and Push-Button USB Copy

A 2.5GbE port and a separate 1GbE port provide wired network connections, while two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports accommodate USB devices. The front Copy button transfers data from a connected USB device to the internal drives, making it convenient to bring those files into your private storage hub.

The two bays accept compatible 3.5 in SATA HDDs or 2.5 in SATA SSDs, with drives sold separately.6 HDD Hibernation, Scheduled Power On/Off and Wake on LAN give you options for managing when the system and drives are active.

Footnotes:

1 The 40 TB raw capacity is calculated using two 20 TB drives, sold separately. Usable capacity depends on the installed drives and RAID configuration; filesystem and system metadata reduce usable space.

2 Transfer figures are from Synology internal testing. Actual performance varies with environment, usage, configuration and concurrent applications.

3 C2 Storage for Hybrid Share requires an eligible monthly or annual subscription.

4 The 25-camera figure is the recommended count at 1080p. Recording capabilities vary with codec, resolution, drives, configuration, features and workload. Surveillance Station includes two default licenses; additional cameras or devices require purchased licenses. Cameras are not included.

5 Active Insight includes three free licenses. Additional licenses require annual subscriptions.

6 Consult the current Synology drive compatibility list before purchasing drives. Guaranteed functionality, reliability and performance apply to compatible drives. Drives are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. Storage drives are sold separately. The enclosure supports compatible 3.5 in SATA hard drives or 2.5 in SATA SSDs. With two 20 TB drives installed, it provides 40 TB of raw storage; usable capacity depends on the drives and RAID configuration. Check the manufacturer's current drive compatibility list before purchasing drives.
  • Yes. Mobile apps, desktop clients, and browser access let you access private files and media remotely. Version history supports recovery after accidental deletion, mistakes, or malware. Backup tools support Windows, Linux, and macOS devices, virtual machines, and cloud accounts, while photo features include automatic backup, album organization, and secure sharing links.
  • Supported storage configurations include Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1. Basic volumes can migrate to RAID 1, and Synology Hybrid RAID and RAID 1 support volume expansion with larger hard drives. Usable storage capacity depends on the installed drives and selected RAID configuration.
  • There is one 2.5GbE RJ-45 LAN port and one 1GbE RJ-45 LAN port, plus two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports. Two RJ-45 LAN cables are included. Manufacturer testing reports sequential transfers exceeding 282 MB/s read and 217 MB/s write, but actual performance varies with configuration, usage, and environment.
