It's official: today is the first day of CES 2024! Currently, our Abt team is exploring the convention to find the newest and hottest technology releases. Their first stop? The ASUS booth! ASUS is known for its high-quality laptop, mobile phone, desktop computer and gaming technology. But the CES 2024 product we're featuring here is an amazing combo of two technologies. It's the ASUS ROG Phone 8 series, a smartphone designed and built for gamers. One of our top technologists, Carl, got to speak with an ASUS representative and do a deep dive into this new and advanced smartphone. Keep reading to learn more.

ROG Phone 8: A Gaming First Device

This ASUS smartphone line comes in two versions: the ROG Phone 8 and the ROG Phone 8 Pro. This CES 2024 release is the brand's eighth iteration of the ROG Phone, featuring the best performance so far. The series uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which is the top mobile platform for smartphones at this moment. The devices come with a 30% faster CPU and a 25% faster GPU too. The ROG Pro version, an upgrade from the basic ROG Phone 8, comes with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of blazing-fast storage. Altogether, the Phone 8 series has the highest level specs of any smartphone you can find on the market right now.
So what else can you expect from this CES 2024 featured product? It has an enhanced thermal design and is IP68-rated dust and water-resistant. The construction is also 9% lighter, 17% smaller and 15% thinner than previous generations. The advanced tri-camera system uses the latest software features and computational photography algorithms to take your photo quality to the next level. The large battery can go from 0% to 100% with just a 39-minute charge. The phones even offer a lifespan of 3.4 hours when heavy gaming. Want to hear that soundtrack loud and clear as you brave the next level? If you use headphones with your ASUS ROG Phone 8, Dirac Virtuo will provide theatre-like, high-fidelity spatial sound to your gaming, music streaming and binge-watching. It even provides the latest AI Noise Cancelation10 technology so you can fully immerse yourself in your gameplay.

What Makes The ASUS ROG Phone 8 A Gaming Smartphone?

At this point, you may be wondering... why is this device considered a "gaming smartphone"? How can both the functions of a cellphone and a gaming console be held in such a small product? "Gaming smartphones" are not necessarily a category of their own yet, but ASUS has taken the first step toward blending two devices into one. The ASUS representative at CES 2024 told us how and why:
  • The Back Display: The ASUS ROG Phone 8 features a subtle light-up display on the back of the phone. We say "subtle" because when the light-up function is powered off, you can't even tell there's a display there at all! It uses 300 mini LED diodes and is fully customizable, so pick and choose which patterns and scenarios to see.
  • The Front Display: The ASUS ROG Phone 8 features a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED screen. With a peak brightness of 2500 nits, the screen is super bright. It also has a maximum variable refresh rate of 165 Hz, which is ultra-fast. Variable refresh rates eliminate frame tearing and lagging so you can have the smoothest gameplay possible.
  • Ergonomic Gaming Features: When you hold the ASUS ROG Phone 8 on its side, you'll notice embossing on the frame in the left and right corners. These embossings are actually touch-sensitive sensors that you can map to in-game action. This means that when you're actively playing, you can tap them and they will correspond to actions within the game, much like a standard gaming console controller. These sensors are convenient because they'll leave more room on your screen and prevent your fingers from cramping. Also, while the ROG Phone 8 features a port at the bottom of the device for charging, it provides a side USB port too. Most games demand that you hold your phone horizontally, so locating a charging port on the side makes for easier hand-holding while you play.
  • Gaming Software: The ASUS ROG Phone 8 holds a variety of features and settings focused on gaming alone. The ASUS UI allows the user to customize their per-game performance. Some games don't want high performance, so you can purposefully lower the CPU level to give you more battery life. Other games may call for high performance, or what ASUS calls "X-Mode". All of these adjustments can be easily made on the ASUS ROG Phone 8.
