Choosing A Cooling System
Window units are the most common type of air conditioner, pulling air in from the room to run over cooling coils and blow it back. They are easily installed in the bottom half of any window in your home; once your unit is resting steadily on the sill, just close the window to secure it in place. If mounting your AC in a window doesn't appeal to you, try out a portable air conditioner. Portable models use a hose to direct hot air from your home outside. Because they rest on the floor, they are able to be moved from room to room along with you. Both window and portable units also work to remove moisture from the air and you can even buy a unit with directional airflow, which uses an adjustable louver to send cold air vertically or horizontally depending on the home layout. If you need a more permanent cooling system, consider a wall air conditioner. Wall models extend from the wall and require a sleeve for installation. If you want it to be able to cool and heat your home, explore PTACs, or packed terminal air conditioners. Window, portable and wall units all focus on the room in which they're placed; if you invest in a central air conditioning system, you'll get a whole home solution. A large, main unit usually placed outside of the home works to pump cold air in through pre-existing ductwork. While they are the most expensive option, they're also the most convenient. All air conditioners have different cooling capacities, which inform what size you need for the room or home you're cooling. If you go too large, you run the risk of making your space icy or clammy, but if you go too small, you'll overwork your appliance and waste energy. To determine your ideal size, you'll need the square footage of your space. This measurement can directly convert into the BTUs your air conditioner will need. BTUs, or British Thermal Units, break down the level of energy your model needs in order to decrease temperatures.

Basic air conditioners have knobs that control both temperature and fan power. Advanced models, on the other hand, may have digital controls that let you choose precise temperatures and monitor as needed.
