Dyson 492391-01 Airstrait Hair Straightener in Plum | Copper

The Dyson 492391-01 Airstrait hair dryer and straightener in special-edition Plum/Copper combines wet-to-dry styling without hot plates, 11.9 liters per second of airflow and intelligent temperature regulation up to 16 times per second. Wet and Dry modes let you straighten as you dry or refresh already-dry hair between washes, while hair-responsive airflow and a three-second automatic pause reduce unnecessary airflow between passes. Precisely angled air creates a smooth, salon-straight blow-dry with natural movement and volume, and an included presentation case keeps the tool protected when stored.

Key Features

Dry and Straighten in One Step

Drying and straightening happen together rather than as two separate steps, with no heat damage in wet-to-dry operation. Work methodically around the head in sections, letting precisely heated air create a straight style without direct contact with hot plates. Owners reported an average 25% reduction in drying and styling time, with up to eight minutes saved per session and up to an hour per week.1

Soft, Smooth Hair With Natural Movement

Airflow-only styling helps retain hair's natural strength while leaving it soft, smooth and moisturized. In a consumer survey of 100 participants, 94% agreed that hair felt soft and 93% agreed that hair felt smooth. The finish retains movement and volume rather than sacrificing them for a straight style.

Intelligent Heat Control and 45-Degree Airflow

Glass-bead thermistors inside the arms regulate airflow temperature up to 16 times a second to help protect natural shine. Air directed downward at 45 degrees aligns strands and creates smoothing tension, helping reduce damage and breakage during wet-to-dry styling. Styling delivers twice the shine and up to 66% less unwanted frizz and flyaways.2

Dyson Hyperdymium Motor

A 13-blade impeller spins at up to 106,000 rpm and generates up to 3.6 kPa of air pressure. That pressure provides the airflow needed to straighten hair as it dries, making air the styling tool instead of heated plates.

Wet, Dry and Cool Styling Options

Start with Wet mode for freshly washed hair, or select Dry mode and a preset suited to your hair type to refresh your look between washes. Each mode offers three heat settings and two speeds, with Boost included in Dry mode. A high-definition color LCD keeps your airflow and temperature settings visible throughout styling.

Slide the arm lock closed to gently pre-dry roots and add root volume before working through the lengths. Once your hair is styled, use Cool mode to help set the finished look.

Hair-Responsive Airflow and Automatic Pause

Sensors detect hair between the arms and lower airflow when hair is absent for quieter, more efficient styling. After three seconds of inactivity, airflow pauses and resumes when the tool moves. Longer inactivity triggers a separate standby function: after five minutes with the arms open or three minutes with them locked, the LCD switches off and the power button is needed to restart.

PRCD Safety Plug

The Portable Residual Current Device (PRCD) tests electrical current. Housing key electronics in the plug also reduces bulk and weight in the handheld machine. Complete the user guide's TEST and RESET procedure before each styling session.

Footnotes:

1 Time-saving claims compare with owners' existing routines, based on a Dyson survey conducted in August 2023 with 250 US Airstrait owners after at least 30 days of use. Actual savings vary by hair and routine.

2 Shine and frizz comparisons are against air drying, with the straightener used in wet-to-dry mode.

Performance figures are based on manufacturer testing or surveys under specific conditions; results vary with hair, settings and styling routine.

Before every use, press TEST and RESET on the PRCD safety plug and follow the user guide's step-by-step instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Wet mode dries and straightens hair simultaneously, combining two styling steps into one. Dry mode refreshes or touches up already-dry hair between washes. You can also lock the arms closed to pre-dry roots and use Cool mode to help set the finished style.
  • No. Precisely heated airflow straightens hair instead of hot plates. Air is directed downward at 45 degrees to create smoothing tension, while thermistors regulate airflow temperature up to 16 times per second. The manufacturer's no-heat-damage claim applies specifically to wet-to-dry operation.
  • Use it only in the region where it was purchased. It is engineered for the voltage of its purchase country, and the US version is rated at 120 volts. For countries with different voltage, consult the user manual's guarantee section rather than assuming international compatibility.
  • A protective presentation case is included for storage. A travel bag is a separate checkout-selection offer, not part of the standard box contents. Sectioning clips and hydrating oil are not included.
  • Clean the filter monthly, using a soft, dry cloth to remove debris from the outer filter cage and inner filter mesh. Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain performance. Consult the online user guide, support pages, or MyDyson app for detailed cleaning instructions for the filter, tension bars, and diffusers.
